Subgap conductivity in SIN-junctions of high barrier transparency
We investigate the current-voltage characteristics of high-transparency
superconductor-insulator-normal metal (SIN) junctions with the specific tunnel
resistance below 30 kOhm per square micron. The junctions were fabricated from
different superconducting and normal conducting materials, including Nb, Al,
AuPd and Cu. The subgap leakage currents were found to be appreciably larger
than those given by the standard tunnelling model. We explain our results using
the model of two-electron tunnelling in the coherent diffusive transport
regime. We demonstrate that even in the high-transparency SIN-junctions, a
noticeable reduction of the subgap current can be achieved by splitting a
junction into several submicron sub-junctions. These structures can be used as
nonlinear low-noise shunts in Rapid-Single-Flux-Quantum (RSFQ) circuitry for
controlling Josephson qubits.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl
Proximity Induced Josephson-Quasiparticle Process in a Single Electron Transistor
We have performed the first experiments in a superconductor - normal metal -
superconductor single electron transistor in which there is an extra
superconducting strip partially overlapping the normal metal island in good
metal-to-metal contact. Superconducting proximity effect gives rise to current
peaks at voltages below the quasiparticle threshold. We interpret these peaks
in terms of the Josephson-quasiparticle process and discuss their connection
with the proximity induced energy gap in the normal metal island.Comment: 4 pages + 4 figure
Enumerative aspects of the Gross-Siebert program
We present enumerative aspects of the Gross-Siebert program in this
introductory survey. After sketching the program's main themes and goals, we
review the basic definitions and results of logarithmic and tropical geometry.
We give examples and a proof for counting algebraic curves via tropical curves.
To illustrate an application of tropical geometry and the Gross-Siebert program
to mirror symmetry, we discuss the mirror symmetry of the projective plane.Comment: A version of these notes will appear as a chapter in an upcoming

Communicating Josephson Qubits
We propose a scheme to implement a quantum information transfer protocol with
a superconducting circuit and Josephson charge qubits. The information exchange
is mediated by an L-C resonator used as a data bus. The main decoherence
sources are analyzed in detail.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Numerical analysis of the radio-frequency single-electron transistor operation
We have analyzed numerically the response and noise-limited charge
sensitivity of a radio-frequency single-electron transistor (RF-SET) in a
non-superconducting state using the orthodox theory. In particular, we have
studied the performance dependence on the quality factor Q of the tank circuit
for Q both below and above the value corresponding to the impedance matching
between the coaxial cable and SET.Comment: 14 page
Shell evolution approaching the N=20 island of inversion : Structure of 26Na
The levels in 26Na with single particle character have been observed for the first time using the d(25Na, pγ) reaction at 5 MeV/nucleon. The measured excitation energies and the deduced spectroscopic factors are in good overall agreement with (0+1)hω shell model calculations performed in a complete spsdfp basis and incorporating a reduction in the N=20 gap. Notably, the 1p3/2 neutron configuration was found to play an enhanced role in the structure of the low-lying negative parity states in 26Na, compared to the isotone 28Al. Thus, the lowering of the 1p3/2 orbital relative to the 0f7/2 occurring in the neighbouring Z=10 and 12 nuclei - 25,27Ne and 27,29Mg - is seen also to occur at Z=11 and further strengthens the constraints on the modelling of the transition into the island of inversion
Whole genome analysis of a schistosomiasis-transmitting freshwater snail
Biomphalaria snails are instrumental in transmission of the human blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni. With the World Health Organization's goal to eliminate schistosomiasis as a global health problem by 2025, there is now renewed emphasis on snail control. Here, we characterize the genome of Biomphalaria glabrata, a lophotrochozoan protostome, and provide timely and important information on snail biology. We describe aspects of phero-perception, stress responses, immune function and regulation of gene expression that support the persistence of B. glabrata in the field and may define this species as a suitable snail host for S. mansoni. We identify several potential targets for developing novel control measures aimed at reducing snail-mediated transmission of schistosomiasis
New insights into the genetic etiology of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias
Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/'proxy' AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted microglia implication. Gene prioritization in the new loci identified 31 genes that were suggestive of new genetically associated processes, including the tumor necrosis factor alpha pathway through the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex. We also built a new genetic risk score associated with the risk of future AD/dementia or progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD/dementia. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE ε4 allele

Scattering of halo nuclei on heavy targets at energies around the Coulomb barrier : The case of 11Be on 197Au
This work reports on the scattering of 11Be on 197Au at energies around and below the Coulomb barrier. By experimentally identifying the elastic scattering, inelastic scattering and breakup channels, and comparing them with different calculations, valuable information on the 11Be structure and its B(E1) distribution to the continuum are obtained. On top of that, a deeper understanding of the scattering process at low energies is achieved for reactions of this kind, making these studies extendable to other loosely-bound systems like 17,19
