This master degree dissertation in Political Science has as main purpose the study of the work performed by XI Constitutional Government (1987-1991), led by Aníbal Cavaco Silva, and its reflection in the evolution of Portuguese democracy. Indeed, outdated stages of transition and democratic consolidation, begins a new cycle of strong political stabilization, with Cavaco Silva and PSD focusing their attention on improving the efficiency and quality of democracy, arguing that this improvement depends, significantly, on the continuation of the modernization process of the country and achieving a sustainable economic growth, which involve the implementation of a series of structural reforms and the use of the advantageous conditions resulting from the accession of Portugal to the EEC

    Get PDF
Background: The ISARIC prospective multinational observational study is the largest cohort of hospitalized patients with COVID-19. We present relationships of age, sex, and nationality to presenting symptoms. Methods: International, prospective observational study of 60 109 hospitalized symptomatic patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 recruited from 43 countries between 30 January and 3 August 2020. Logistic regression was performed to evaluate relationships of age and sex to published COVID-19 case definitions and the most commonly reported symptoms. Results: ‘Typical’ symptoms of fever (69%), cough (68%) and shortness of breath (66%) were the most commonly reported. 92% of patients experienced at least one of these. Prevalence of typical symptoms was greatest in 30- to 60-year-olds (respectively 80, 79, 69%; at least one 95%). They were reported less frequently in children (≤ 18 years: 69, 48, 23; 85%), older adults (≥ 70 years: 61, 62, 65; 90%), and women (66, 66, 64; 90%; vs. men 71, 70, 67; 93%, each P < 0.001). The most common atypical presentations under 60 years of age were nausea and vomiting and abdominal pain, and over 60 years was confusion. Regression models showed significant differences in symptoms with sex, age and country. Interpretation: This international collaboration has allowed us to report reliable symptom data from the largest cohort of patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19. Adults over 60 and children admitted to hospital with COVID-19 are less likely to present with typical symptoms. Nausea and vomiting are common atypical presentations under 30 years. Confusion is a frequent atypical presentation of COVID-19 in adults over 60 years. Women are less likely to experience typical symptoms than men

Fault Detection and Condition Monitoring of PMSGs in Offshore Wind Turbines

    No full text
Research on fault detection (FD) and condition monitoring (CM) of rotating electrical generators for modern wind turbines has addressed a wide variety of technologies. Among these, permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs) and the analysis of their electromagnetic signatures in the presence of faults deserve emphasis in this paper. PMSGs are prominent in the offshore wind industry, and methods for FD and CM of PMSGs based on electromagnetic measurements are extensively discussed in academia. This paper is a concise review of FD and CM in wind turbines and PMSGs. Terminology and fundamentals of PMSG’s operation are introduced first, aiming to offer an easy read and good reference to a broad audience of engineers and data scientists. Experience and research challenges with stator winding failures are also discussed

Experimental Analysis of a Standalone Renewable Energy Based Hybrid System

Part 12: Renewable EnergyInternational audienceThis paper presents a small-scale prototype of a wind-photovoltaic hybrid system, having batteries as energy storage components. All devices are connected to a common dc-bus using appropriate power converters. The photovoltaic modules are connected through a dc-dc buck converter using Perturb and Observe Maximum Power Point Tracking control. The permanent magnet synchronous generator (wind generator) power interface is composed of a three-phase diode-bridge rectifier followed by a buck converter. A bidirectional buck-boost converter is applied to the batteries in order to control the dc-bus voltage, to which the load is directly connected. The whole hybrid system was built as a laboratory prototype, by using a dSPACE digital controller. Several experimental results are presented in order to analyze the system performance under both steady state operation and transients

Fibroblasts of Machado Joseph Disease patients reveal autophagy impairment

    No full text
Machado Joseph Disease (MJD) is the most frequent autosomal dominantly inherited cerebellar ataxia caused by the over-repetition of a CAG trinucleotide in the ATXN3 gene. This expansion translates into a polyglutamine tract within the ataxin-3 protein that confers a toxic gain-of-function to the mutant protein ataxin-3, contributing to protein misfolding and intracellular accumulation of aggregates and neuronal degeneration. Autophagy impairment has been shown to be one of the mechanisms that contribute for the MJD phenotype. Here we investigated whether this phenotype was present in patient-derived fibroblasts, a common somatic cell type used in the derivation of induced pluripotent stem cells and subsequent differentiation into neurons, for in vitro disease modeling. We generated and studied adult dermal fibroblasts from 5 MJD patients and 4 healthy individuals and we found that early passage MJD fibroblasts exhibited autophagy impairment with an underlying mechanism of decreased autophagosome production. The overexpression of beclin-1 on MJD fibroblasts reverted partially autophagy impairment by increasing the autophagic flux but failed to increase the levels of autophagosome production. Overall, our results provide a well-characterized MJD fibroblast resource for neurodegenerative disease research and contribute for the understanding of mutant ataxin-3 biology and its molecular consequences

Multifunctional hybrid structures made of open-cell aluminum foam impregnated with cellulose/graphene nanocomposites

    No full text
This work focuses on exploring combinations of disintegrated bacterial cellulose nanofibres (BC) with graphene oxide (GO) (reduced and non-reduced) and phase change materials (PCMs) prepared in the form of foam-like structures. The presence of GO remarkable improves the fire-retardancy and provides dimensional stability to the foams while PCMs gives thermal energy storage capacity. The foams were exposed to methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) vapour to become hydrophobic which was confirmed by measuring water absorption capacity and water contact angle. To extend the multifunctionality of these nanocomposite foams, a selected composition was impregnated into an open-cell aluminium foam creating a hybrid structure (Al-BC/GO) with higher mechanical properties (increase in stress of 100 times) and high sound absorption coefficient (near 1 between 1000-4000 Hz). The low thermal conductivity confirms that this hybrid structure is a thermal insulator. These advantages highlight the potential applications of the proposed materials e.g. construction, automotive and aeronautical sectors.publishe

This paper analyzes the way historians deal with different types of historical documents (considering their origins) based on a research conducted at the Paulista Museum of the University of São Paulo on the theme of domestic space and material culture in colonial São Paulo. We will discuss how a critical dialogue was established between the tridimensional sources - the pieces of the collection - and the textual sources produced in the original context of the domestic artifacts - especially inventories. Based on the cataloging of the collection, we analyze situations of approximation and incompatibility often created by the use of the terms by the contemporaries to designate certain pieces of furniture in the 18th and 19th centuries and the terms used in the process of pieces classification in museological institutions. In order to do so, we will shed light on boxes and chests, because these kind of furniture to contain and store were ubiquitous in the 18th century houses of the Portuguese Empire
