    Novel Methods Based on Deep Learning Applied to Condition Monitoring in Smart Manufacturing Processes

    The Industry 4.0 is the recent trend of automation and the rotating machinery takes a role of great relevance when it comes to meet the demands and challenges of smart manufacturing. Condition-based monitoring (CBM) schemes are the most prominent tool to cover the task of predictive diagnosis. With the current demand of the industry and the increasing complexity of the systems, it is vital to incorporate CBM methodologies that are capable of facing the variability and complexity of manufacturing processes. In recent years, various deep learning techniques have been applied successfully in different areas of research, such as image recognition, robotics, and the detection of abnormalities in clinical studies; some of these techniques have been approaching to the diagnosis of the condition in rotating machinery, promising great results in the Industry 4.0 era. In this chapter, some of the deep learning techniques that promise to make important advances in the field of intelligent fault diagnosis in industrial electromechanical systems will be addressed

    Assessing changes in competency of fourth-year veterinary medical students following a defined clinical experience

    The purpose of this study was to measure the competency of problem solving skills of fourth-year veterinary students. The study identified two primary objectives, (a) define clinical competency for fourth-year veterinary medical students, and (b) construct an instrument to assess the student’s level of clinical competency. A faculty advisory panel identified three themes in the development of a definition of clinical competency, (a) competency was situational, (b) competency was described by ability, and (c) the definition of fourth-year student competence was descriptive within the context of primary patient care. The description of competency contributed to the establishment of parameters applied to the rubric. Student self-assessments were taken twice; initially at the beginning of the clinical rotation, and again at the end of the rotation as a post-clinical assessment. The faculty instructor provided a comparison post-clinical assessment to serve as an authentication of the reliability of the instrument. Overall, students qualified themselves to be “Fully Competent Students” at the beginning of the clinical rotation, and also at the end of the rotation. However, in the disaggregated quantified scores, the student self-assessment peaked at the highest competence level, “Among The Most Competent Students,” for five descriptors of values and beliefs listed under Responsibility, Professionalism, and Interpersonal Skills. The faculty comparison assessment was in agreement with the student’s qualified description as “Fully Competent Students” but did not agree with the higher quantified scores posted for values and beliefs. The descriptive statistics of the data reflect that the mean increased between the pre-clinical (M = 8.43, SD = 1.36) and the post-clinical (M = 9.10, SD = 1.32) assessments. The comparison mean for the faculty assessment (M = 9.01, SD = 1.52) was slightly lower than the student post-assessment. The assessment provided evidence supporting a confidence statement that the instrument has the sensitivity to detect changes in skills, and is consistent with research validated measures of problem-solving skills. Faculty authentication provided evidence of intra-rater reliability, while statistical analysis provided evidence that a relationship appears to be present between live-patient animal instruction and the increase in problem-solving competence of fourth-year veterinary students

    Modelo metodológico de implementación del proceso de Codificación de la Gestión del Conocimiento en Organizaciones Desarrolladoras de Software en Colombia

    El propósito de este documento es presentar el diseño de un modelo metodológico de implementación del Proceso de Codificación del Conocimiento para organizaciones desarrolladoras de software. La construcción de este diseño se realizó en tres fases. La primera fase consistió en una revisión sistemática de literatura de artículos científicos publicados entre los años 2004 y 2013. En la segunda fase se hizo una primera selección de los componentes candidatos del modelo tomando como base el resultado de la revisión sistemática de literatura, las definiciones de Codificación de Conocimiento y la experiencia profesional de los autores en la industria de software. En la tercera fase se seleccionaron los componentes finales del modelo, para lo cual, se tuvieron en cuenta sus dimensiones y la relación del proceso de Codificación con los otros procesos de gestión de conocimiento. Como resultado se obtuvo un diseño de un modelo metodológico de implementación del proceso con sus respectivas dimensiones, las dos primeras fueron sugeridas por la literatura y la tercera fue propuesta por los autores de esta tesis: Conocimiento Codificado Nuevo CCN, Conocimiento Codificado Existente CCE y Conocimiento Codificado Susceptible a Cambios CCSC. Para cada una de ellas se especificaron actividades, tareas, roles, productos de trabajo y herramientas de apoyo.Abstract. The purpose of this document is to present the design of an implementation methodological model of Knowledge Codification Process inside software development companies. The structure of this design was done in three phases. The first one consisted in a sytematic literature review of scientific articles published between 2004 and 2013. The second phase contained a first selection of the candidate components of the methodological model starting with of the outcome literature systematic review, Knowledge Codification definitions and the profesional experience of the authors in the software industry. In the last one, the final components of the methodological model were selected, for which, their dimensions and the relation of the Codification with the others knowledge management processes were considered. As a result, we obtained an implementation methodological model of the Knowledge Codification Process with their respective dimensions, the first two were suggested by the literature and the authors proposed the third one: Codification of New Knowledge CNK, Codification of Existing Knowledge CEK, and Codification of Existing Knowledge Susceptible to Change CEKSC.     Diagnosis methodology based on deep feature learning for fault identification in metallic, hybrid and ceramic bearings

    Scientific and technological advances in the field of rotatory electrical machinery are leading to an increased efficiency in those processes and systems in which they are involved. In addition, the consideration of advanced materials, such as hybrid or ceramic bearings, are of high interest towards high-performance rotary electromechanical actuators. Therefore, most of the diagnosis approaches for bearing fault detection are highly dependent of the bearing technology, commonly focused on the metallic bearings. Although the mechanical principles remain as the basis to analyze the characteristic patterns and effects related to the fault appearance, the quantitative response of the vibration pattern considering different bearing technology varies. In this regard, in this work a novel data-driven diagnosis methodology is proposed based on deep feature learning applied to the diagnosis and identification of bearing faults for different bearing technologies, such as metallic, hybrid and ceramic bearings, in electromechanical systems. The proposed methodology consists of three main stages: first, a deep learning-based model, supported by stacked autoencoder structures, is designed with the ability of self-adapting to the extraction of characteristic fault-related features from different signals that are processed in different domains. Second, in a feature fusion stage, information from different domains is integrated to increase the posterior discrimination capabilities during the condition assessment. Third, the bearing assessment is achieved by a simple softmax layer to compute the final classification results. The achieved results show that the proposed diagnosis methodology based on deep feature learning can be effectively applied to the diagnosis and identification of bearing faults for different bearing technologies, such as metallic, hybrid and ceramic bearings, in electromechanical systems. The proposed methodology is validated in front of two different electromechanical systems and the obtained results validate the adaptability and performance of the proposed approach to be considered as a part of the condition-monitoring strategies where different bearing technologies are involved.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Proposal to improve the framework of environmental management, sustainability and social responsibility of the textile sector of the town of Puente Aranda in Bogotá D.C.

    En este trabajo de investigación se desarrolló un proceso estructural, el cual buscaba diseñar una propuesta estratégica para mejorar el marco de gestión ambiental, sostenibilidad y responsabilidad social del clúster comercial del sector textil que se encuentra ubicado en la localidad de Puente Aranda en Bogotá D.C. El sector textil en Bogotá es indispensable para la generación de empleo y desarrollo regional y nacional, así como para la industrialización de sectores económicos que contribuyen con el crecimiento del producto interno bruto del país; por tanto, se hace necesaria la configuración de estrategias de sector para reducir el nivel contaminante de tareas o acciones organizacionales referentes a procesos tales como hilado, tinturación y tratamiento general de telas, textiles y fibras naturales. Por tal razón, en el trabajo de investigación se desarrolló un diagnóstico de los marcos de responsabilidad social y medioambiental de un clúster de empresas que están ubicadas en el sector de Puente Aranda. El diagnóstico se ejecutó mediante la aplicación de indicadores ETHOS-IARSE, una metodología que conduce al reconocimiento de falencias, vacíos de función y otras problemáticas relacionadas con el marco empresarial que compete a sostenibilidad. Una vez identificadas las fallas o vacíos de función, se realizó un estudio en prospectiva simple el buscaba conocer, a partir de hallazgos en presente, cómo resultaría afectado el sector textil de la ciudad de Bogotá en el futuro de no plantear estrategias de gestión e intervención que sirvan para regular el marco de responsabilidad social y medioambiental de empresas dedicadas al procesamiento general de textiles industriales. Del estudio prospectivo se obtuvieron dos resultados significativos. El primero trata de la aplicación de sanciones y multas distritales por exceder límites máximos permisibles competentes a recursos hídricos y calidad del aire. El segundo señaló el aumento de niveles de contaminación y acciones industriales alejadas de conceptos como: concientización medio ambiental, sostenibilidad, diseño de estrategias preventivas con integración de indicadores de gestión físico-químicos y otras acciones conexas. Ahora, el diagnóstico y estudio prospectivo fueron bases necesarias para la implementación de una propuesta de intervención estratégica, cuyo scope se dividió en dos partes, acciones de responsabilidad social empresarial (actores, pedagogía ambiental y concientización) y gestión ambiental (líneas bioquímicas, estratégicas, plan de acción anual y líneas de prevención de contaminación de recursos hídricos)In this research work, a structural process was developed, which sought to design a strategic proposal to improve the framework of environmental management, sustainability and social responsibility of the commercial cluster of the textile sector that is located in the town of Puente Aranda in Bogotá D.C. The textile sector in Bogotá is essential for the generation of employment and regional and national development, as well as for the industrialization of economic sectors that contribute to the growth of the country's gross domestic product; therefore, it is necessary to configure sector strategies to reduce the polluting level of tasks or organizational actions related to processes such as spinning, dyeing and general treatment of fabrics, textiles and natural fibers. For this reason, in the research work, a diagnosis of the social and environmental responsibility frameworks of a cluster of companies that are located in the Puente Aranda sector was developed. The diagnosis was carried out through the application of ETHOS-IARSE indicators, a methodology that leads to the recognition of shortcomings, function gaps and other problems related to the business framework that pertains to sustainability. Once the failures or gaps in function were identified, a simple prospective study was carried out that sought to know, based on findings in the present, how the textile sector of the city of Bogotá would be affected in the future if management and intervention strategies were not proposed that serve to regulate the framework of social and environmental responsibility of companies engaged in the general processing of industrial textiles. Two significant results were obtained from the prospective study. The first deals with the application of district sanctions and fines for exceeding competent maximum permissible limits to water resources and air quality. The second pointed to the increase in pollution levels and industrial actions away from concepts such as: environmental awareness, sustainability, design of preventive strategies with integration of physical-chemical management indicators and other related actions.     Actualmente, se ha determinado que la enfermedad COVID19, se encuentra asociada al coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, el cual pertenece a la familia del virus del Síndrome Agudo Respiratorio Severo (SARS), que surgió y afectó a gran parte de la población mundial en el periodo de 2002 a 2004. Desde que se dio a conocer la existencia del virus SARS-CoV-2, se ha discutido sobre la importancia de la transmisión viral a través de pequeñas microgotas en el aire (denominadas comúnmente "aerosoles"). En este trabajo se muestra que la minimización de la transmisión y propagación del SARS-CoV-2, puede ser controlada de manera eficiente a través de la ventilación como control de ingeniería asociada a sistemas como son la filtración de alta eficiencia o la luz UV-C. Con este tipo de controles se puede proporcionar un entorno saludable y seguro en el retorno a las actividades de la población en general.Currently, it has been determined that COVID19 disease is associated with the SARSCoV- 2 coronavirus, which belongs to the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) virus family, which emerged and affected a large part of the world's population from 2002 to 2004. Since the SARS-CoV-2 virus became known, the importance of viral transmission through small airborne droplets (also commonly referred as "aerosols") has been discussed. The purpose of this article is to show that the minimization of the transmission and spread of SARS-CoV-2 can be efficiently controlled through ventilation as an engineering control associated with systems such as high efficiency filtration or UV-C light. With these types of controls, it is possible to provide a healthy and safe environment in the return to the activities of the general population
