    Dynamic Underwater Glider Network for Environmental Field Estimation

Integration with a network of surface relay nodes and asynchronous consensus are used to distribute local information and achieve the global field estimate.     Plagioclase nucleation and growth kinetics in a hydrous basaltic melt by decompression experiments

    Isothermal single-step decompression experiments (at temperature of 1075 °C and pressure between 5 and 50 MPa) were used to study the crystallization kinetics of plagioclase in hydrous high-K basaltic melts as a function of pressure, effective undercooling (ΔT eff) and time. Single-step decompression causes water exsolution and a consequent increase in the plagioclase liquidus, thus imposing an effective undercooling (∆T eff), accompanied by increased melt viscosity. Here, we show that the decompression process acts directly on viscosity and thermodynamic energy barriers (such as interfacial-free energy), controlling the nucleation process and favoring the formation of homogeneous nuclei also at high pressure (low effective undercoolings). In fact, this study shows that similar crystal number densities (N a) can be obtained both at low and high pressure (between 5 and 50 MPa), whereas crystal growth processes are favored at low pressures (5–10 MPa). The main evidence of this study is that the crystallization of plagioclase in decompressed high-K basalts is more rapid than that in rhyolitic melts on similar timescales. The onset of the crystallization process during experiments was characterized by an initial nucleation event within the first hour of the experiment, which produced the largest amount of plagioclase. This nucleation event, at short experimental duration, can produce a dramatic change in crystal number density (N a) and crystal fraction (ϕ), triggering a significant textural evolution in only 1 h. In natural systems, this may affect the magma rheology and eruptive dynamics on very short time scales

    The Early Stages of the Integration of the Internet in EU Newsrooms

    The current study explores the perceived integration of the internet inside European newsrooms. The authors carried out a survey with 239 journalists working for 40 of the most-read outlets in 11 European countries.The study shows that journalists consider the internet a useful tool mainly for practical functions, rather than to enhance the core values and functions of their profession. However, news production continues to be based on direct interaction, and journalists’ professional identity is still anchored to print newspapers. Moreover, a lack of communication between publishers and newsrooms emerges. Professional and personal profiles and nationality play a relevant role in the development of attitudes towards the implementation of the internet in newsrooms

    Metallic artefact reduction with monoenergetic dual-energy CT: systematic ex vivo evaluation of posterior spinal fusion implants from various vendors and different spine levels

    Objectives: To evaluate optimal monoenergetic dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) settings for artefact reduction of posterior spinal fusion implants of various vendors and spine levels. Methods: Posterior spinal fusion implants of five vendors for cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine were examined ex vivo with single-energy (SE) CT (120 kVp) and DECT (140/100 kVp). Extrapolated monoenergetic DECT images at 64, 69, 88, 105keV and individually adjusted monoenergy for optimised image quality (OPTkeV) were generated. Two independent radiologists assessed quantitative and qualitative image parameters for each device and spine level. Results: Inter-reader agreements of quantitative and qualitative parameters were high (ICC = 0.81-1.00, κ = 0.54-0.77). HU values of spinal fusion implants were significantly different among vendors (P < 0.001), spine levels (P < 0.01) and among SECT, monoenergetic DECT of 64, 69, 88, 105keV and OPTkeV (P < 0.01). Image quality was significantly (P < 0.001) different between datasets and improved with higher monoenergies of DECT compared with SECT (V = 0.58, P < 0.001). Artefacts decreased significantly (V = 0.51, P < 0.001) at higher monoenergies. OPTkeV values ranged from 123-141keV. OPTkeV according to vendor and spine level are presented herein. Conclusions: Monoenergetic DECT provides significantly better image quality and less metallic artefacts from implants than SECT. Use of individual keV values for vendor and spine level is recommended.     The experience of enchantment in human-computer interaction

    Improving user experience is becoming something of a rallying call in human–computer interaction but experience is not a unitary thing. There are varieties of experiences, good and bad, and we need to characterise these varieties if we are to improve user experience. In this paper we argue that enchantment is a useful concept to facilitate closer relationships between people and technology. But enchantment is a complex concept in need of some clarification. So we explore how enchantment has been used in the discussions of technology and examine experiences of film and cell phones to see how enchantment with technology is possible. Based on these cases, we identify the sensibilities that help designers design for enchantment, including the specific sensuousness of a thing, senses of play, paradox and openness, and the potential for transformation. We use these to analyse digital jewellery in order to suggest how it can be made more enchanting. We conclude by relating enchantment to varieties of experience.</p

    [68Ga]Ga-DOTANOC Uptake at Pancreatic Head/Uncinate Process: Is It a Persistent Diagnostic Pitfall Over Time?

    Simple Summary The purpose of the present study is to describe the frequency of non-malignant [68Ga]Ga-DOTANOC uncinate process (UP) uptake and to evaluate its variations over time. Among the first 6 months of enrolment of a monocentric prospective observational electronic archive, analyses of a large number of PET/CT scans (n = 268) of NEN pts (n = 172) demonstrated that: UP uptake is a frequent finding (observed in almost half of the cases, slightly higher than previously reported), mostly presenting with a diffuse pattern and, interestingly, characterized by variations over time in almost one third of the cases. The consciousness of this diagnostic pitfall is of utmost importance for accurate [68Ga]Ga-DOTANOC PET/CT reporting, since the pancreas represents one of the most frequent sites of NEN. Purpose: [68Ga]Ga-DOTA-peptide uptake in the pancreatic head/uncinate process (UP) is a frequent PET/CT finding. Although mostly physiologic, it can represent a pitfall in PET/CT reading, especially when focal. An increased frequency of UP uptake has been reported in patients (pts) affected by diabetes mellitus (DM). The aim of the study is to describe the frequency of [68Ga]Ga-DOTANOC UP uptake to evaluate its variations over time and its possible correlation with DM. Methods: In September 2017, a monocentric prospective observational electronic archive was initiated at our center to collect clinical and imaging data of pts undergoing [68Ga]Ga-DOTANOC PET/CT. Among the pts enrolled in the first 6 months (Sept 2017 to Feb 2018), those presenting [68Ga]Ga-DOTANOC PET/CT uptake at UP level were included. Pts with UP lesions already documented on CT/MRI or those that underwent surgical excision of UP before PET/CT were excluded from the analysis. [68Ga]Ga-DOTANOC UP uptake was classified as diffuse or focal and compared with the pattern observed in previous PET/CT scans performed at our center. An increased frequency of UP uptake was also correlated with the presence of DM. Results: In the first 6 months, 253 pts were enrolled in the archive and 172 out of them were included in the analysis. UP increased uptake was frequently observed (77/172, 44.8%) and was mostly diffuse (62/77). In 75/172 pts (43.6%), previous [68Ga]Ga-DOTANOC PET/CT scans were available (overall 268 scans; number of previous PET per pt range: 1-20) and were retrospectively reviewed. Despite the fact that, in most pts, the uptake pattern was stable over time (54/75 pts, 72%), it changed in approximately one third of cases (21/75, 28%). Among DM pts (29/172), only 10/29 (34.4%) presented increased UP uptake. Conclusions: UP [68Ga]Ga-DOTANOC uptake is a frequent non-malignant finding (slightly higher than previously reported), mostly presenting with a diffuse pattern. However, contrary to previous reports, our data show that the pattern of uptake may vary over time in approximately one third of the cases and it is not more frequently observed in pts with DM

    A film-forming graphene/diketopyrrolopyrrole covalent hybrid with far-red optical features: Evidence of photo-stability

    A dianiline derivative of a symmetric donor-acceptor-donor diketopyrrolopyrrole-based dye is employed for the two-sided covalent functionalization of liquid exfoliated few layers graphene flakes, through a direct arylation reaction. The resulting nanohybrid features the properties of a polymeric species, being solution-processed into homogeneous thin films, featuring a pronounced red-shift of the main absorption band with respect to the model dye unit and energy levels comparable to those of common diketopyrrolopyrrole-based polymers. A good electrical conductivity and the absence of radical signals generated after intense white light illumination, as probed through electron paramagnetic resonance, suggest a possible future application of this composite ma- terial in the field of photoprotective, antistatic layers with tunable colors
