The historical and present relations between the capital, public works, irrigations
systems and hydroelectric energy are analyzed in this paper. The landscape
and the arrangement of the territory in many river basins of the Iberian
Peninsula have always been conditioned by man made structures such as river
dams. These type of works, often controversial, have a double sided effect:
benefits distant spaces (irrigation, drinkable water provision, production of
electrical energy, etc.) and creates problems locally (land expropriation, lost
of agriculture land, valley isolation, etc.). From an historical review of the development
of different hydroelectric projects across Spain, this paper shows how
the traditional relations between private capital and great public works particularly
in the case of the hydroelectric energy, favoured the creation of a water
landscape where it did not exist before
Images of mill and water artefacts in city iconography during the 16th and 17th centuries
In pre-industrial society, artefacts such as grinding mills powered by water or wind, fulling mills,
waterpumps, canals and irrigation ditches were essential tools. They were an important reference
in landscape and therefore, they were shown in pictures, maps and other forms of iconography.
The present study focuses on the way these water artefacts, which are depicted in views of Spanich
cities, were collected in the Civitates Orbis Terrarum and also in Pier Maria Baldi’s drawings
during the following century, as well as in other illustrations of the time
On Deterministic and Stochastic Multiple Pathogen Epidemic Models
In this paper, we consider a stochastic epidemic model with two pathogens. In order to analyze the coexistence of two pathogens, we compute numerically the expectation time until extinction (the mean persistence time), which satisfies a stationary partial differential equation with degenerate variable coefficients, related to backward Kolmogorov equation. I use the finite element method in order to solve this equation, and we implement it in FreeFem++. The main conclusion of this paper is that the deterministic and stochastic epidemic models differ considerably in predicting coexistence of the two diseases and in the extinction outcome of one of them. Now, the main challenge would be to find an explanation for this result.Spanish Ministry of Sciences Innovation and Universities with the project PGC2018-094522-B-100 and the Basque Government with the project IT1247-19
On the Zero-Neutron Density in Stochastic Nuclear Dynamics
In this short paper, we compare the deterministic model for the nuclear reactor dynamic (Hetrick, 1993) with the stochastic model (Kinard and Allen, 2004). Our numerical results show coincidences between the deterministic model and the mean of the stochastic paths, although, as already observed by other authors, there is alarge amount of dispersion between the individual paths. Notably, we always observe that the neutron density approaches zero within a short time. In this paper, we investigate this question; more concretely, we study the mean-extinction of the neutron density. The technique used here first builds the backward Kolmogorov differential equation and then solves it numerically using the finite-element method with FreeFem++. Our results confirm that in a very short time the neutrons disappear although later they recover probably due to the external source. This work was supported by Spanish Ministry of Sciences Innovation and Universities with the project PGC2018-094522-B-100 and by the Basque Government with the project IT1247-19

Modeling and Calibration for Some Stochastic Differential Models
In many scientific fields, the dynamics of the system are often known, and the main challenge is to estimate the parameters that model the behavior of the system. The question then arises whether one can use experimental measurements of the system response to derive the parameters? This problem has been addressed in many papers that focus mainly on data from a deterministic model, but few efforts have been made to use stochastic data instead. In this paper, we address this problem using the following procedure: first, we build the probabilistic stochastic differential models using a natural extension of the commonly used deterministic models. Then, we use the data from the stochastic models to estimate the model parameters by solving a nonlinear regression problem. Since the stochastic solutions are not differentiable, we use the well-known Nelder–Mead algorithm. Our numerical results show that the fitting procedure is able to obtain good estimates of the parameters requiring only a few sample data. This work was supported by Spanish Ministry of Sciences Innovation and Universities with the project PGC2018-094522-B-100 and by the Basque Government with the project IT1247-19
Peer reviewe
