    Virtu@l-ApS: Soporte Tecnológico para el Aprendizaje-Servicio Virtual

    Virtual Service Learning (VSL) is Service Learning (SL) mediated by ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) − both for the provision of the service, and for the support, monitoring and assessment of the learning by teachers − and conceived for situations in which face-to-face communication between students, teachers and beneficiaries of the service is not practicable. Experience has shown that a web application for the support of VSL (and more generally, of SL) would be of great interest. Here, we present the development of such a web application: Virtu@l-ApS (from Aprendizaje-Servicio, SL in Spanish). To date, this software-development project has been carried out in the context of two collaborative and interdisciplinary UNED (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia, the Spanish national distance-learning university) bachelor's degree projects, from the Social Education and Computer Engineering degrees, respectively. Though the currently-available version of the web application lacks important functionality, the experience of developing it has been extremely useful, in particular, in helping to clarify the requirements for a fully operational application which we expect will contribute to the support and expansion of SL in the Spanish higher education sector.El Aprendizaje-Servicio Virtual (ApSV) es el Aprendizaje-Servicio (ApS) mediado por las TIC (Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación) –tanto para la prestación del servicio como para el apoyo, monitorización y evaluación del aprendizaje por parte de los docentes− y concebido para situaciones en que la comunicación cara a cara entre estudiantes, profesores y beneficiarios del servicio no es posible. La experiencia ha demostrado que sería de gran interés disponer de una aplicación web para el soporte del ApSV (y, en general, de ApS). Presentamos aquí el desarrollo de dicha aplicación web: Virtu@l-ApS. Hasta la fecha, este proyecto de desarrollo de software se ha llevado a cabo en el marco de dos Proyectos de Fin de Grado colaborativos e interdisciplinares de la Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED), de los grados en Educación Social e Ingeniería Informática, respectivamente. Aunque la versión de la aplicación web actualmente disponible carece de importantes funcionalidades, la experiencia de su desarrollo ha sido extremadamente útil, en particular, para la clarificación de los requisitos de una aplicación real, completamente operativa, que esperamos contribuya al soporte y la expansión del ApS en la Enseñanza Superior en España

    Interaction with universities and firm's innovative performance: evidence from the Spanish innovation survey

    3 tables, 29 pagesThis paper analyses the effect of interaction with universities on firms’ innovation output, measured as the degree of novelty of product innovation. The analysis is based on a sample of 3,257 manufacturing firms, active in innovation, and located in Spain. We distinguish between two types of interaction mechanisms: cooperation in innovation activities and outsourcing of research and development (R&D) services. Using data from two waves of the Spanish innovation survey (2004 and 2007), we examine the effect of interaction in 2004 on subsequent product innovation in 2005-2007. The results show that neither cooperation with universities nor outsourcing of R&D services to these agents has a significant effect on product innovation. In other words, for Spanish manufacturing firms the acquisition of knowledge from universities does not represent an important strategy to introduce new products into the market. In contrast, cooperation with customers and acquisition of external R&D from other firms seem to be important for innovation, especially for firms pursuing more radical innovation.Peer reviewe

    Assortative mating and differential male mating success in an ash hybrid zone population

    BACKGROUND: The structure and evolution of hybrid zones depend mainly on the relative importance of dispersal and local adaptation, and on the strength of assortative mating. Here, we study the influence of dispersal, temporal isolation, variability in phenotypic traits and parasite attacks on the male mating success of two parental species and hybrids by real-time pollen flow analysis. We focus on a hybrid zone population between the two closely related ash species Fraxinus excelsior L. (common ash) and F. angustifolia Vahl (narrow-leaved ash), which is composed of individuals of the two species and several hybrid types. This population is structured by flowering time: the F. excelsior individuals flower later than the F. angustifolia individuals, and the hybrid types flower in-between. Hybrids are scattered throughout the population, suggesting favorable conditions for their local adaptation. We estimate jointly the best-fitting dispersal kernel, the differences in male fecundity due to variation in phenotypic traits and level of parasite attack, and the strength of assortative mating due to differences in flowering phenology. In addition, we assess the effect of accounting for genotyping error on these estimations. RESULTS: We detected a very high pollen immigration rate and a fat-tailed dispersal kernel, counter-balanced by slight phenological assortative mating and short-distance pollen dispersal. Early intermediate flowering hybrids, which had the highest male mating success, showed optimal sex allocation and increased selfing rates. We detected asymmetry of gene flow, with early flowering trees participating more as pollen donors than late flowering trees. CONCLUSION: This study provides striking evidence that long-distance gene flow alone is not sufficient to counter-act the effects of assortative mating and selfing. Phenological assortative mating and short-distance dispersal can create temporal and spatial structuring that appears to maintain this hybrid population. The asymmetry of gene flow, with higher fertility and increased selfing, can potentially confer a selective advantage to early flowering hybrids in the zone. In the event of climate change, hybridization may provide a means for F. angustifolia to further extend its range at the expense of F. excelsior

    From the 1970s onward, we started to dream of the leisure society in which, thanks to technological progress and consequent increase in productivity, working hours would be minimized and we would all live in abundance. We all could devote our time almost exclusively to personal relationships, contact with nature, sciences, the arts, playful activities, and so on. Today, this utopia seems more unattainable than it did then. Since the 21st century, we have seen inequalities increasingly accentuated: of the increase in wealth in the United States between 2006 and 2018, adjusted for inflation and population growth, more than 87% went to the richest 10% of the population, and the poorest 50% lost wealth [1] . Following the crisis of 2008, social inequalities, rights violations, planetary degradation, and the climate emergency worsened and increased (see [2] ). In 2019, the world's 2153 billionaires had more wealth than 4.6 billion people [3] . The World Bank estimates that COVID-19 will push up to 150 million people into extreme poverty [4]

    A virtuous circle? The effects of university-industry relationships in a region with low absorptive capacity

    This article examines the effects of university-industry relationships (UIRs) in a Spanish region - Valencian Community - with low absorptive capacity. The analysis considers two effects of UIRs, one on business innovation and the other on the scientific production of academic researchers. The results reveal that UIRs have no significant effects on either firms' technological innovation or academic scientific production. Therefore, these results suggest that, in territories with low absorptive capacity, UIRs, mainly R&D-based, do not produce the effects found in other contexts, which requires some rethinking about these types of territories. © 2020 The Author(s)

    Interacting regional-scale regime shifts for biodiversity and ecosystem services

    Current trajectories of global change may lead to regime shifts at regional scales, driving coupled human–environment systems to highly degraded states in terms of biodiversity, ecosystem services, and human well-being. For business-as-usual socioeconomic development pathways, regime shifts are projected to occur within the next several decades, to be difficult to reverse, and to have regional- to global-scale impacts on human society. We provide an overview of ecosystem, socioeconomic, and biophysical mechanisms mediating regime shifts and illustrate how these interact at regional scales by aggregation, synergy, and spreading processes. We give detailed examples of interactions for terrestrial ecosystems of central South America and for marine and coastal ecosystems of Southeast Asia. This analysis suggests that degradation of biodiversity and ecosystem services over the twenty-first century could be far greater than was previously predicted. We identify key policy and management opportunities at regional to global scales to avoid these shifts

    Ecological Factors and Diversification among Neotropical Characiforms

    Morphological and DNA sequence data has been used to propose hypotheses of relationships within the Characiformes with minimal comparative discussion of causes underpinning the major intraordinal diversification patterns. We explore potential primary morphological factors controlling the early diversification process in some Neotropical characiforms as the first step to identifying factors contributing to the pronounced intraordinal morphological and species diversity. A phylogenetic reconstruction based on 16S rDNA (mitochondrial) and 18S rDNA (nuclear) genes provided the framework for the identification of the main morphological differences among the Acestrorhynchidae, Anostomidae, Characidae, Ctenoluciidae, Curimatidae, Cynodontidae, Gasteropelecidae, Prochilodontidae and Serrasalmidae. Results indicate an initial split into two major groupings: (i) species with long dorsal-fin bases relative to the size of other fins (Curimatidae, Prochilodontidae, Anostomidae, Serrasalmidae) which primarily inhabit lakes, swamps, and rivers (lineage I); and (ii) species with short dorsal-fin bases (Acestrorhynchidae, Gasteropelecidae, Characidae) which primarily inhabit creeks and streams (lineage II). The second diversification stage in lineage I involved substantial morphological diversification associated with trophic niche differences among the monophyletic families which range from detritivores to large item predators.     Abdominal obesity and low physical activity are associated with insulin resistance in overweight adolescents: a cross-sectional study

    ABSTRACT: Background: Previous studies have assessed the metabolic changes and lifestyles associated with overweight adolescents. However, these associations are unclear amongst overweight adolescents who have already developed insulin resistance. This study assessed the associations between insulin resistance and anthropometric, metabolic, inflammatory, food consumption, and physical activity variables amongst overweight adolescents. Methods: This cross-sectional study divided adolescents (n = 120) between 10 and 18 years old into 3 groups: an overweight group with insulin resistance (O + IR), an overweight group without insulin resistance (O-IR), and a normal-weight control group (NW). Adolescents were matched across groups based on age, sex, pubertal maturation, and socioeconomic strata. Anthropometric, biochemical, physical activity, and food consumption variables were assessed. Insulin resistance was assessed using homeostatic model assessment (HOMA Calculator Version 2.2.2 from ©Diabetes Trials Unit, University of Oxford), and overweight status was assessed using body mass index according to World Health Organization (2007) references. A chi-square test was used to compare categorical variables. ANOVAs or Kruskal-Wallis tests were used for continuous variables. Multiple linear regression models were used to calculate the probability of the occurrence of insulin resistance based on the independent variables. Results: The risk of insulin resistance amongst overweight adolescents increases significantly when they reach a waist circumference > p95 (OR = 1.9, CIs = 1.3-2.7, p = 0.013) and watch 3 or more hours/day of television (OR = 1.7, CIs = 0.98-2.8, p = 0.033). Overweight status and insulin resistance were associated with higher levels of inflammation (hsCRP ≥1 mg/L) and cardiovascular risk according to arterial indices. With each cm increase in waist circumference, the HOMA index increased by 0.082; with each metabolic equivalent (MET) unit increase in physical activity, the HOMA index decreased by 0.026. Conclusions: Sedentary behaviour and a waist circumference > p90 amongst overweight adolescents were associated with insulin resistance, lipid profile alterations, and higher inflammatory states. A screening that includes body mass index, in waist circumference, and physical activity evaluations of adolescents might enable the early detection of these alterations
