The quest for dark matter in dwarf spheroidal galaxies with the Cherenkov Telescope Array

Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are among the best environments that can be studied with Cherenkov telescopes for indirect searches of γ\gamma-ray signals coming from dark matter self-interaction (annihilation or decay), due to their proximity and negligible background emission. We present new determinations of the dark-matter amount - i.e. the astrophysical factors JJ and DD - in dwarf-galaxy halos obtained through the MCMC Jeans analysis of their brightness and kinematic data. Such factors are of great importance to test the performances of the next-generation γ\gamma-ray instruments such as the Cherenkov Telescope Array in detecting dark-matter signals from astronomical environments, or constraining the limits to dark-matter physics parameters (particle mass and lifetime, annihilation cross section).Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, proceedings of the "RICAP-18 - 7th Roma International Conference on Astroparticle Physics" held on 2018 Sep 04-07 at Universit\`a di "Roma Tre", Via V. Corrientes sobre el género. Feminismos, educación física y deporte

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

SecDocker: Hardening the Continuous Integration Workflow

    Get PDF
1-13 p.Current Continuous Integration (CI) processes face significant intrinsic cybersecurity challenges. The idea is not only to solve and test formal or regulatory security requirements of source code but also to adhere to the same principles to the CI pipeline itself. This paper presents an overview of current security issues in CI workflow. It designs, develops, and deploys a new tool for the secure deployment of a container-based CI pipeline flow without slowing down release cycles. The tool, called SecDocker for its Docker-based approach, is publicly available in GitHub. It implements a transparent application f irewall based on a configuration mechanism avoiding issues in the CI workflow associated with intended or unintended container configurations. Integrated with other DevOps Engineers tools, it provides feedback from only those scenarios that match specific patterns, addressing future container security issues.SIhttps://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s42979-021-00939-

Photovoltaic energy prediction using machine learning techniques.

    Get PDF
Solar energy is becoming one of the most promising power sources in residential, commercial, and industrial applications. Solar photovoltaic (PV) facilities use PV cells that convert solar irradiation into electric power. PV cells can be used in either standalone or grid-connected systems to supply power for home appliances, lighting, and commercial and industrial equipment. Managing uncertainty and fluctuations in energy production is a key challenge in integrating PV systems into power grids and using them as steady, standalone power sources. For this reason, it is very important to forecast solar energy power output. In this paper, we analyze and compare various methods to predict the production of photovoltaic energy for individual installations and network areas around the world, using statistical methods for time series and different machine learning techniques.Universidad de Málaga. Short communication: Broadening the diagnosis panel of reproductive pathogens associated with abortion in ruminants

    Get PDF
Diagnosis of abortion in cattle, sheep and goat have been mainly focused on abortive pathogens with a recognized impact in outbreaks, but the aetiologic diagnosis rates have been historically low worldwide. Thus, we analysed the presence of pathogens in abortion outbreaks, focusing on the less-common pathogens in cattle farms with control programmes for reproductive pathogens, and in ovine and caprine farms. Thirty-one cases from Galician farms submitted to our laboratory during 2013-2015 were analysed (16 bovine, 7 ovine and 8 caprine farms) by polymerase chain reaction and culture from foetal tissues (n = 52 foetuses). Diagnosis was reached in 21/31 farms: 9/16 in bovine, 6/7 in ovine and 6/8 in caprine. Campylobacter spp. were found in all three species (3/9 diagnosed cases in bovine, 2/6 in ovine and 4/6 in caprine). Furthermore, Ureaplasma diversum was detected in cattle (4/9 of diagnosed cases), Bovine Viral Diarrhoea Virus – 2 was detected in sheep (2/6) and Neospora caninum in goats (1/6). Our results prove the occurrence of abortion in response to pathogens that are traditionally considered less relevant and rarely included in the diagnosis of ruminant abortion. Therefore, differential diagnosis of abortion should consider these pathogens (at least when other causes have been ruled out), to effectively control abortion in farms

New Perspectives Related to the Bioluminescent System in Dinoflagellates: Pyrocystis lunula, a Case Study

    Get PDF
Pyrocystis lunula is considered a model organism due to its bioluminescence capacity linked to circadian rhythms. The mechanisms underlying the bioluminescent phenomenon have been well characterized in dinoflagellates; however, there are still some aspects that remain an enigma. Such is the case of the presence and diversity of the luciferin-binding protein (LBP), as well as the synthesis process of luciferin. Here we carry out a review of the literature in relation to the molecular players responsible for bioluminescence in dinoflagellates, with particular interest in P. lunula. We also carried out a phylogenetic analysis of the conservation of protein sequence, structure and evolutionary pattern of these key players. The basic structure of the luciferase (LCF) is quite conserved among the sequences reported to date for dinoflagellate species, but not in the case of the LBP, which has proven to be more variable in terms of sequence and structure. In the case of luciferin, its synthesis has been shown to be complex process with more than one metabolic pathway involved. The glutathione S-transferase (GST) and the P630 or blue compound, seem to be involved in this process. In the same way, various hypotheses regarding the role of bioluminescence in dinoflagellates are exposed

Real-time ventricular cancellation in unipolar atrial fibrillation electrograms

Unipolar atrial fibrillation (AF) electrograms (EGMs) require far-field ventricle cancellation to recover hidden atrial activations. Current methods cannot achieve real-time cancellation because of the temporal delay they introduce. We propose a new real-time ventricular cancellation (RVC) method based on causal implementation optimized for real-time functioning. The method is similar to the classical average beat subtraction (ABS) method but it computes the ventricular contribution before the ventricular activation finishes. We compare the proposed method to the ABS on synthetic and real EGM databases for the time and frequency domains. All parameters and their optimal values are analyzed and validated. The RVC method provides a good reconstruction of the unipolar EGMs and a better local activation time detection than the classical approach with average F1scores 0.7307 and 0.7125, respectively. The spectral analysis shows that the average power after ventricular cancellation is reduced for frequency bands between 3 and 5.5 Hz, demonstrating that the proposed method removes the ventricular component present in the unipolar EGM signals compared to the ABS method. The phase mapping analysis on the RVC method presented lower error when comparing the annotated EGM cycles with the phase inversion intervals. In terms of performance ABS and RVC behave similarly, but the real-time capability of the latter justifies its preference over the offline implementations. In the clinical environment other online investigations, e.g., rotational activity assessment, dominant frequency or local activation time mapping, might benefit from the real-time potential of the proposed cancellation method. This study was supported by grants PI18/01895 from the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, and RD16/0011/0029 Red de Terapia Celular from the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, projects RTI2018-099655-B-I00; TEC2017-92552-EXP from Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, Y2018/TCS-4705, PRACTICO-CM Comunidad de Madrid, and the support of NVIDIA Corporation with the donation of the Titan V GPU used during this research
