Slowly evolving geometry in recurrent neural networks I: extreme dilution regime
We study extremely diluted spin models of neural networks in which the
connectivity evolves in time, although adiabatically slowly compared to the
neurons, according to stochastic equations which on average aim to reduce
frustration. The (fast) neurons and (slow) connectivity variables equilibrate
separately, but at different temperatures. Our model is exactly solvable in
equilibrium. We obtain phase diagrams upon making the condensed ansatz (i.e.
recall of one pattern). These show that, as the connectivity temperature is
lowered, the volume of the retrieval phase diverges and the fraction of
mis-aligned spins is reduced. Still one always retains a region in the
retrieval phase where recall states other than the one corresponding to the
`condensed' pattern are locally stable, so the associative memory character of

An exploration of parents’ preferences for foot care in juvenile idiopathic arthritis: a possible role for the discrete choice experiment
Background:
An increased awareness of patients’ and parents’ care preferences regarding foot care is desirable from a clinical perspective as such information may be utilised to optimise care delivery. The aim of this study was to examine parents’ preferences for, and valuations of foot care and foot-related outcomes in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).<p></p>
Methods:
A discrete choice experiment (DCE) incorporating willingness-to-pay (WTP) questions was conducted by surveying 42 parents of children with JIA who were enrolled in a randomised-controlled trial of multidisciplinary foot care at a single UK paediatric rheumatology outpatients department. Attributes explored were: levels of pain; mobility; ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL); waiting time; referral route; and footwear. The DCE was administered at trial baseline. DCE data were analysed using a multinomial-logit-regression model to estimate preferences and relative importance of attributes of foot care. A stated-preference WTP question was presented to estimate parents’ monetary valuation of health and service improvements.<p></p>
Results:
Every attribute in the DCE was statistically significant (p < 0.01) except that of cost (p = 0.118), suggesting that all attributes, except cost, have an impact on parents’ preferences for foot care for their child. The magnitudes of the coefficients indicate that the strength of preference for each attribute was (in descending order): improved ability to perform ADL, reductions in foot pain, improved mobility, improved ability to wear desired footwear, multidisciplinary foot care route, and reduced waiting time. Parents’ estimated mean annual WTP for a multidisciplinary foot care service was £1,119.05.<p></p>
Conclusions:
In terms of foot care service provision for children with JIA, parents appear to prefer improvements in health outcomes over non-health outcomes and service process attributes. Cost was relatively less important than other attributes suggesting that it does not appear to impact on parents’ preferences.<p></p>
Observation of a 1750 MeV/c^2 Enhancement in the Diffractive Photoproduction of K^+K^-
Using the FOCUS spectrometer with photon beam energies between 20 and 160
\gev, we confirm the existence of a diffractively photoproduced enhancement in
at 1750 \mevcc with nearly 100 times the statistics of previous
experiments. Assuming this enhancement to be a single resonance with a
Breit-Wigner mass shape, we determine its mass to be
\mevcc and its width to be \mevcc. We find no
corresponding enhancement at 1750 \mevcc in , and again neglecting any
possible interference effects we place limits on the ratio . Our results are consistent with previous
photoproduction experiments, but, because of the much greater statistics,
challenge the common interpretation of this enhancement as the
seen in annihilation experiments.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Search for Rare and Forbidden 3-body Di-muon Decays of the Charmed Mesons D+ and Ds+
Using a high statistics sample of photo-produced charm particles from the
FOCUS experiment at Fermilab, we report results of a search for eight rare and
Standard-Model-forbidden decays: D+, Ds+ > h+/- muon-/+ muon+ (with h=pion or
Kaon). Improvement over previous results by a factor of 1.7--14 is realized.
Our branching ratio upper limit D+ > pion+ muon- muon+ of 8.8E-6 at the 90%
C.L. is below the current MSSM R-Parity violating constraint.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure file

Risk measures for direct real estate investments with non-normal or unknown return distributions
The volatility of returns is probably the most widely used risk measure for real estate. This is rather surprising since a number of studies have cast doubts on the view that volatility can capture the manifold risks attached to properties and corresponds to the risk attitude of investors. A central issue in this discussion is the statistical properties of real estate returns—in contrast to neoclassical capital market theory they are mostly non-normal and often unknown, which render many statistical measures useless. Based on a literature review and an analysis of data from Germany we provide evidence that volatility alone is inappropriate for measuring the risk of direct real estate.
We use a unique data sample by IPD, which includes the total returns of 939 properties across different usage types (56% office, 20% retail, 8% others and 16% residential properties) from 1996 to 2009, the German IPD Index, and the German Property Index. The analysis of the distributional characteristics shows that German real estate returns in this period were not normally distributed and that a logistic distribution would have been a better fit. This is in line with most of the current literature on this subject and leads to the question which indicators are more appropriate to measure real estate risks. We suggest that a combination of quantitative and qualitative risk measures more adequately captures real estate risks and conforms better with investor attitudes to risk. Scale-invariance of galaxy clustering
Some years ago we proposed a new approach to the analysis of galaxy and
cluster correlations based on the concepts and methods of modern statistical
Physics. This led to the surprising result that galaxy correlations are fractal
and not homogeneous up to the limits of the available catalogs. The usual
statistical methods, which are based on the assumption of homogeneity, are
therefore inconsistent for all the length scales probed so far, and a new, more
general, conceptual framework is necessary to identifythe real physical
properties of these structures. In the last few years the 3-d catalogs have
been significatively improved and we have extended our methods to the analysis
of number counts and angular catalogs. This has led to a complete analysis of
all the available data that we present in this review. The result is that
galaxy structures are highly irregular and self-similar: all the available data
are consistent with each other and show fractal correlations (with dimension ) up to the deepest scales probed so far (1000 \hmp) and even more
as indicated from the new interpretation of the number counts. The evidence for
scale-invariance of galaxy clustering is very strong up to 150 \hmp due to
the statistical robustness of the data but becomes progressively weaker
(statistically) at larger distances due to the limited data. In These facts
lead to fascinating conceptual implications about our knowledge of the universe
