    Determination of the Heat Distribution in the Raw Cotton Packed in the Coil

    As a result of experimental studies, a special mathematical model of raw cotton is developed. The effect of density change on the thermal conductivity coefficient is determined. A nonlinear differential equation of heat propagation in coils is obtained. The dependence of the density of raw cotton on the coil height is determined experimentally. The heat flux is intense propagating from denser layers of raw cotton to less dense ones. In a saturated form, the effect of density changes on the propagation of heat is less than in the coils. Pocket spontaneous heating occurs locally with sharp boundaries.An expression is found, which is the general solution of the mathematical model of heat propagation in raw cotton in coils, on the basis of which a number of physical real models can be constructed.The model allows to preliminarily give an estimation of the likely picture of the temperature field in the given microvolumes of raw cotton

    Extraction of Cerium (IV) Using Di–n-butylsulfoxide in Chloroform from Nitric Acid and Determination with Arsenazo (III) as Chromogenic Reagent

    A new and advantageous extraction procedure was developed for extraction of cerium (IV) from nitric acid with di-n-butylsulfoxide (DBSO) in perchloric acid. The extracted Ce (IV) was determined spectrophotometrically using 0.01 % solution of arsenazo-III in 3Mper-chloric acid. Various parameters such as equilibration time, metal ion concentration, effect of temperature and diverse ions on the extraction of the Ce (IV) were established. U (VI), Th (IV) and Pb (II) interfere whereas only phosphate and fluoride suppress the extraction among anions. The stoichiometric composition of the cerium complex withDBSO was determined by slope analysis and found to be 1:4. The process of extraction was found to be exothermic. Deionized water was the most appropriate solvent for back extraction of cerium.     Can saliva offer an advantage in monitoring of diabetes mellitus?: a case control study

    Objectives: Diabetes Mellitus is emerging as a major health problem over these years. Present method of blood glucose monitoring by venepuncture is invasive leading to reduced patient compliance and thereby ineffective judicious monitoring. The need of the hour is to direct research in the direction of establishing painless and more acceptable blood glucose analysis method.The objective of the study is to conduct a comparative analysis of the concentrations of salivary glucose and blood glucose in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Study Design: This study assessed glucose levels using the glucose oxidase method in blood and unstimulated sali - va in 90 subjects who were divided into 3 equal groups of controlled type 2 diabetes, uncontrolled type 2 diabetes and those without diabetes. Statistical analysis was carried out using one way ANOVA, Post hoc Tukeys tests and Pearson's correlation coefficient test. Results: Salivary glucose levels were significantly higher in patients with diabetes than controls. There was a signi - ficant positive correlation between salivary and plasma glucose levels in patients with diabetes. Conclusions: Glucose concentration in saliva is higher in diabetics but hyperglycemia does not influence salivary glucose levels. Further clarification is required to claim the diagnostic potentials of saliva in diabetes

    The moderating effect of project complexity on the relationship between organizational controls and cost estimation performance: A conceptual model

    Cost overrun in construction projects is high and expected to rise. The improvement of cost estimation performance is vital as it provides a better chance for the construction projects to avoid cost blowouts. In this paper, an extensive literature review is conducted from online databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar which focus on organization controls and its mechanisms to improve cost estimation performance in the construction industry. While many prior studies on cost estimation emphasized investigating cost estimation methods to improve the performance of cost estimation, less attention was given to organizational and project factors. Several studies have explored the effects of organizational control on performance but failed to include project complexity in the relationship between organizational controls and performance. Therefore, this paper conceptualizes the effect of organizational controls on cost estimation performance with project complexity as a moderator. This proposition suggests project complexity has advantages and disadvantages on organizational controls. Each control mechanism has its feature and effectiveness in high complexity projects. Hence, managers should select appropriate control mechanisms, such as input control and output control that have high effectiveness on the performance

    Using Patterns of Genetic Association to Elucidate Shared Genetic Etiologies Across Psychiatric Disorders

    Twin studies indicate that latent genetic factors overlap across comorbid psychiatric disorders. In this study, we used a novel approach to elucidate shared genetic factors across psychiatric outcomes by clustering single nucleotide polymorphisms based on their genome-wide association patterns. We applied latent profile analysis (LPA) to p-values resulting from genome-wide association studies across three phenotypes: symptom counts of alcohol dependence (AD), antisocial personality disorder (ASP), and major depression (MD), using the European–American case-control genome-wide association study subsample of the collaborative study on the genetics of alcoholism (N = 1399). In the 3-class model, classes were characterized by overall low associations (85.6% of SNPs), relatively stronger association only with MD (6.8%), and stronger associations with AD and ASP but not with MD (7.6%), respectively. These results parallel the genetic factor structure identified in twin studies. The findings suggest that applying LPA to association results across multiple disorders may be a promising approach to identify the specific genetic etiologies underlying shared genetic variance

    The Importance of Peer Influence for LGBTQ+ Youth in Rural Communities Aaron Kemmerer supported by findings from Safe as Yourself (SAY) Project Traci Wike (PI), Leah Bouchard, Maurico Yabar, and Aaron Kemmerer Objectives: To explore the experiences and narratives of LGBTQ+ youth in rural North Carolina. To elaborate on the influence of peer support and impact of peer victimization for LGBTQ+ youth in rural North Carolina. Methods: Data was collected from eleven young people who were interviewed from 2019-2020 at an LGBTQ+ youth center in rural North Carolina. The interviews were coded and analyzed using narrative analysis on a team of interraters; the team consisted of four members from VCU School of Social Work: the principle investigator, two doctoral research assistants, and an MSW research assistant. Results: Analysis of the interviews, though still in process, so far highlights the impact of the dual impact of participants’ peers --- simultaneously pointing to LGBTQ+ youth experiences with both peer victimization (as a risk factor) and peer support (as a resilience factor). Conclusions: Peer support is vital for LGBTQ+ youth in rural communities and may help offset the negative impact of peer victimization.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/gradposters/1059/thumbnail.jp

    Cyclosporin is an immunosuppressive agent with a wide range of therapeutic uses. In transplant patients, it is used for the prevention of rejection and graft-versus-host reactions. The metabolism and bioavailability of cyclosporin can be significantly and persistently influenced through induction of CYP3A4 caused by the concomitant use of rifampicin. However, awareness of the need for the timely and frequent monitoring of cyclosporin levels during and especially after treatment with rifampicin has not fully been addressed. Here, we describe 3 patient cases concerning significant episodes of sub-therapeutic cyclosporin levels after short-term rifampicin therapy. Rifampicin was administered for three to five days and decreased cyclosporin levels were observed ± 7 days after the initiation of rifampicin, and continued during the following weeks even after the cessation of rifampicin therapy. Cyclosporin dosage-adjustments were made based on the cyclosporin blood levels and all 3 patients showed good therapeutic and clinical responses.Zelfs kortdurend gebruik van het antibioticum rifampicine kan de ciclosporineconcentratie in het bloed verlagen.     The use of biomedicine, complementary and alternative medicine, and ethnomedicine for the treatment of epilepsy among people of South Asian origin in the UK

    Studies have shown that a significant proportion of people with epilepsy use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). CAM use is known to vary between different ethnic groups and cultural contexts; however, little attention has been devoted to inter-ethnic differences within the UK population. We studied the use of biomedicine, complementary and alternative medicine, and ethnomedicine in a sample of people with epilepsy of South Asian origin living in the north of England. Interviews were conducted with 30 people of South Asian origin and 16 carers drawn from a sampling frame of patients over 18 years old with epilepsy, compiled from epilepsy registers and hospital databases. All interviews were tape-recorded, translated if required and transcribed. A framework approach was adopted to analyse the data. All those interviewed were taking conventional anti-epileptic drugs. Most had also sought help from traditional South Asian practitioners, but only two people had tried conventional CAM. Decisions to consult a traditional healer were taken by families rather than by individuals with epilepsy. Those who made the decision to consult a traditional healer were usually older family members and their motivations and perceptions of safety and efficacy often differed from those of the recipients of the treatment. No-one had discussed the use of traditional therapies with their doctor. The patterns observed in the UK mirrored those reported among people with epilepsy in India and Pakistan. The health care-seeking behaviour of study participants, although mainly confined within the ethnomedicine sector, shared much in common with that of people who use global CAM. The appeal of traditional therapies lay in their religious and moral legitimacy within the South Asian community, especially to the older generation who were disproportionately influential in the determination of treatment choices. As a second generation made up of people of Pakistani origin born in the UK reach the age when they are the influential decision makers in their families, resort to traditional therapies may decline. People had long experience of navigating plural systems of health care and avoided potential conflict by maintaining strict separation between different sectors. Health care practitioners need to approach these issues with sensitivity and to regard traditional healers as potential allies, rather than competitors or quacks

    Exploring the relationship between polygenic risk for cannabis use, peer cannabis use, and the longitudinal course of cannabis involvement

    Background and aims: Few studies have explored how polygenic propensity to cannabis use unfolds across development, and no studies have yet examined this question in the context of environmental contributions such as peer cannabis use. Outlining the factors that contribute to progression from cannabis initiation to problem use over time may ultimately provide insights into mechanisms for targeted interventions. We sought to examine the relationships between polygenic liability for cannabis use, cannabis use trajectories across ages 12–30, and perceived peer cannabis use at ages 12–17. Design: Mixed effect logistic and linear regressions were used to examine associations between polygenic risk scores, cannabis use trajectory membership, and perceived peer cannabis use. Setting: USA Participants: From the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA) study, a cohort of 1,167 individuals aged 12–26 years at their baseline (i.e., first) interview. Measurements: Key measurements included lifetime cannabis use (yes/no), frequency of past 12-month cannabis use, maximum lifetime frequency of cannabis use, cannabis use disorder (using DSM-5 criteria), and perceived peer cannabis use. Polygenic risk scores (PRS) were created using summary statistics from a large (N = 162,082) genome-wide association study (GWAS) of cannabis use. Three trajectories reflecting no/low (n=844), moderate (n=137) and high (n=186) use were identified. PRS were significantly associated with trajectory membership (p=0.002 – 0.006, maximum conditional R2 = 0.014, ORs = 1.40 – 1.49). Individuals who reported that most/all of their best friends used cannabis had significantly higher PRS than those who reported that none of their friends were users (OR = 1.35, 95% C.I. = [1.04, 1.75], p = 0.023). Perceived peer use itself explained up to 11.3% of the variance in trajectory class membership (OR: 1.50 – 4.65). When peer cannabis use and the cannabis use PRS were entered into the model simultaneously, both the PRS and peer use continued to be significantly associated with class membership (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Genetic propensity to cannabis use derived from heterogeneous samples appears to correlate with longitudinal increases in cannabis use frequency in young adults
