Self-similar impulsive capillary waves on a ligament
We study the short-time dynamics of a liquid ligament, held between two solid
cylinders, when one is impulsively accelerated along its axis. A set of
one-dimensional equations in the slender-slope approximation is used to
describe the dynamics, including surface tension and viscous effects. An exact
self-similar solution to the linearized equations is successfully compared to
experiments made with millimetric ligaments. Another non-linear self-similar
solution of the full set of equations is found numerically. Both the linear and
non-linear solutions show that the axial depth at which the liquid is affected
by the motion of the cylinder scales like . The non-linear solution
presents the peculiar feature that there exists a maximum driving velocity
above which the solution disappears, a phenomenon probably related to
the de-pinning of the contact line observed in experiments for large pulling
velocities
Living small-sized (63-150 µm) foraminifera from mid-shelf to mid-slope environments in the Bay of Bisca
Live (rose Bengal stained) foraminiferal faunas of the 63–150 μm size fraction have been investigated in surficial sediment (0–1 cm) from mid-shelf to mid-slope environments in the Bay of Biscay. Eleven stations were sampled in April 2002 and March 2004 between 80 and 2000 m water depth (mwd). Earlier studies on the temporal variability of phytoplankton primary production suggest that our stations were sampled at the most eutrophic period of the year. In response to the decrease of exported organic matter flux to the seafloor along our bathymetric transect, foraminiferal standing stocks decrease from ~1400–2000 specimens per 50 cm3 on the continental shelf (100–140 mwd) and upper slope (550 mwd) to about 400 specimens per 50 cm3 at mid-slope stations (2000 mwd). At all stations, the faunas contain an important amount of small opportunistic species that are favored by seasonal phytodetritus input. On the continental shelf where phytoplankton bloom, events may be geographically restricted; the foraminiferal response is dependent on the distance to the surface-water primary-production cells. Textularia porrecta is very abundant at an 80-m-deep station that is close to the coast and characterized by a high sedimentation rate of fine-grained particles. Foraminiferal faunas are dominated by Nonionella iridea, Cassidulina carinata and Bolivina ex. gr. dilatata at the outer-shelf stations (110–140 mwd) that are under the direct influence of spring bloom phytodetritus input in the northern Bay of Biscay. A fauna dominated by Bolivina dilatata/spathulata and Bolivina subaenariensis is found in the southeastern Bay of Biscay at a 140-m-deep outer-shelf station located seaward of the Adour River estuary, where the sediment is probably enriched in terrestrial organic matter. Apparently, differences in foraminiferal composition between outer-shelf areas in the northern and southeastern Bay of Biscay are related to differences in organic matter quality. On the continental slope, a bathymetric zonation of taxa is observed from upper-slope sites (550–1000 mwd) rich in Epistominella exigua and Uvigerina peregrina to mid-slope stations (1600–2000 mwd), where Nuttallides pusillus and Gavelinopsis translucens dominate the small-sized living fauna. This bathymetric foraminiferal zonation probably reflects a trophic gradient between upper-slope eutrophic stations and mid-slope, more oligotrophic sites. Our zonal description of small-sized living foraminifera (63–150 μm) is new for the Bay of Biscay and may provide the basis to reconstruct former export production regimes in marginal paleo-environments from temperate latitude areas
Urban agriculture: multi-dimensional tools for social development in poor neighbourhoods
For over 30 years, different urban agriculture (UA) experiments have been undertaken in Montreal (Quebec, Canada). The Community Gardening Program, managed by the City, and 6 collective gardens, managed by community organizations, are discussed in this article. These experiments have different objectives, including food security, socialization and education. Although these have changed over time, they have also differed depending on geographic location (neighbourhood). The UA initiatives in Montreal have resulted in the development of a centre with a significant vegetable production and a socialization and education environment that fosters individual and collective social development in districts with a significant economically disadvantaged population. The various approaches attain the established objectives and these are multi-dimensional tools used for the social development of disadvantaged populations.Depuis plus de 30 ans, différentes expériences d’AU ont été tentée à Montréal (Québec, Canada). Le programme des jardins communautaires, géré par la Ville, et 6 jardins collectifs, gérés par des organisations communautaires, sont examinés dans le cadre de cet article. Ces expériences visent différents objectifs : accroître la sécurité alimentaire, sociabiliser, éduquer, etc. Les objectifs évoluent dans le temps mais aussi selon les quartiers. Notre étude révèle que les initiatives en AU à Montréal sont un lieu de production de légumes non négligeable, un espace pour sociabiliser et un lieu d’éducation favorisant un développement social individuel et collectif des quartiers ayant une forte présence de population économique défavorisée. Les différentes approches atteignent les objectifs identifiés et permettent le développement d’outils multi-facettes favorisant le développement social des populations défavorisées.Durante más de 30 años se han realizado diversos experimentos relacionados con la agricultura urbana en Montreal (Québec, Canadá). Este artículo analiza el Programa de Horticultura Comunitario, gestionado por la ciudad, y 6 huertos colectivos, gestionados por organizaciones comunitarias. Estos experimentos cuentan con objetivos diferentes, entre los que se encuentran la seguridad alimentaria, la socialización y la educación. Con el paso del tiempo estos programas han ido evolucionando. Los proyectos se diferencian según la ubicación geográfica en la que se encuentran (barrios). Las iniciativas de agricultura urbana en Montreal han conseguido el desarrollo de un centro con una importante producción hortícola, así como un contexto de socialización y educación que fomenta el desarrollo social individual y colectivo en las zonas con un importante número de población económicamente desfavorecida. Astrometric positions for 18 irregular satellites of giant planets from 23 years of observations
The irregular satellites of the giant planets are believed to have been
captured during the evolution of the solar system. Knowing their physical
parameters, such as size, density, and albedo is important for constraining
where they came from and how they were captured. The best way to obtain these
parameters are observations in situ by spacecrafts or from stellar occultations
by the objects. Both techniques demand that the orbits are well known. We aimed
to obtain good astrometric positions of irregular satellites to improve their
orbits and ephemeris. We identified and reduced observations of several
irregular satellites from three databases containing more than 8000 images
obtained between 1992 and 2014 at three sites (Observat\'orio do Pico dos Dias,
Observatoire de Haute-Provence, and European Southern Observatory - La Silla).
We used the software PRAIA (Platform for Reduction of Astronomical Images
Automatically) to make the astrometric reduction of the CCD frames. The UCAC4
catalog represented the International Celestial Reference System in the
reductions. Identification of the satellites in the frames was done through
their ephemerides as determined from the SPICE/NAIF kernels. Some procedures
were followed to overcome missing or incomplete information (coordinates,
date), mostly for the older images. We managed to obtain more than 6000
positions for 18 irregular satellites: 12 of Jupiter, 4 of Saturn, 1 of Uranus
(Sycorax), and 1 of Neptune (Nereid). For some satellites the number of
obtained positions is more than 50\% of what was used in earlier orbital
numerical integrations. Comparison of our positions with recent JPL ephemeris
suggests there are systematic errors in the orbits for some of the irregular

Accurate strain measurements in highly strained Ge microbridges
Ge under high strain is predicted to become a direct bandgap semiconductor.
Very large deformations can be introduced using microbridge devices. However,
at the microscale, strain values are commonly deduced from Raman spectroscopy
using empirical linear models only established up to 1.2% for uniaxial stress.
In this work, we calibrate the Raman-strain relation at higher strain using
synchrotron based microdiffraction. The Ge microbridges show unprecedented high
tensile strain up to 4.9 % corresponding to an unexpected 9.9 cm-1 Raman shift.
We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that the Raman strain relation
is not linear and we provide a more accurate expression.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Multi-insecticide resistant malaria vectors in the field remain susceptible to malathion, despite the presence of Ace1 point mutations
Insecticide resistance in Anopheles mosquitoes is seriously threatening the success of insecticide-based malaria vector control. Surveillance of insecticide resistance in mosquito populations and identifying the underlying mechanisms enables optimisation of vector control strategies. Here, we investigated the molecular mechanisms of insecticide resistance in three Anopheles coluzzii field populations from southern Cote d'Ivoire, including Agboville, Dabou and Tiassale. All three populations were resistant to bendiocarb, deltamethrin and DDT, but not or only very weakly resistant to malathion. The absence of malathion resistance is an unexpected result because we found the acetylcholinesterase mutation Ace1-G280S at high frequencies, which would typically confer cross-resistance to carbamates and organophosphates, including malathion. Notably, Tiassale was the most susceptible population to malathion while being the most resistant one to the pyrethroid deltamethrin. The resistance ratio to deltamethrin between Tiassale and the laboratory reference colony was 1,800 fold. By sequencing the transcriptome of individual mosquitoes, we found numerous cytochrome P450-dependent monooxygenases - including CYP6M2, CYP6P2, CYP6P3, CYP6P4 and CYP6P5 - overexpressed in all three field populations. This could be an indication for negative cross-resistance caused by overexpression of pyrethroid-detoxifying cytochrome P450s that may activate pro-insecticides, thereby increasing malathion susceptibility. In addition to the P450s, we found several overexpressed carboxylesterases, glutathione S-transferases and other candidates putatively involved in insecticide resistance
Invasion of Africa by a single pfcrt allele of South East Asian type
BACKGROUND: Because of its dramatic public health impact, Plasmodium falciparum resistance to chloroquine (CQ) has been documented early on. Chloroquine-resistance (CQR) emerged in the late 1950's independently in South East Asia and South America and progressively spread over all malaria areas. CQR was reported in East Africa in the 1970's, and has since invaded the African continent. Many questions remain about the actual selection and spreading process of CQR parasites, and about the evolution of the ancestral mutant gene(s) during spreading. METHODS: Eleven clinical isolates of P. falciparum from Cambodia and 238 from Africa (Senegal, Ivory Coast, Bukina Faso, Mali, Guinea, Togo, Benin, Niger, Congo, Madagascar, Comoros Islands, Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique, Cameroun, Gabon) were collected during active case detection surveys carried out between 1996 and 2001. Parasite DNA was extracted from frozen blood aliquots and amplification of the gene pfcrt exon 2 (codon 72–76), exon 4 and intron 4 (codon 220 and microsatellite marker) were performed. All fragments were sequenced. RESULTS: 124 isolates with a sensitive (c76/c220:CVMNK/A) haplotype and 125 isolates with a resistant c76/c220:CVIET/S haplotype were found. The microsatellite showed 17 different types in the isolates carrying the c76/c220:CVMNK/A haplotype while all 125 isolates with a CVIET/S haplotype but two had a single microsatellite type, namely (TAAA)3(TA)15, whatever the location or time of collection. CONCLUSION: Those results are consistent with the migration of a single ancestral pfcrt CQR allele from Asia to Africa. This is related to the importance of PFCRT in the fitness of P. falciparum point out this protein as a potential target for developments of new antimalarial drugs
Soil texture estimation over a semiarid area using TerraSAR-X radar data
In this letter, it is proposed to use TerraSAR-X data for analysis and estimation of soil surface texture. Our study is based on experimental campaigns carried out over a semiarid area in North Africa. Simultaneously with TerraSAR-X radar acquisitions, ground measurements (texture, soil moisture, and roughness) were made on different test fields. A strong correlation is observed between soil texture and a processed signal from two radar images, with the first acquired just after a rain event and the second corresponding to dry soil conditions, acquired three weeks later. An empirical relationship is proposed for the retrieval from radar signals of clay content percent. Soil texture mapping is proposed over the study site, which includes bare soils and olive groves
