Range-Wide Population Assessment of the Endangered Yellow-Naped Amazon (Amazona auropalliata)
Yellow-naped amazons, Amazona auropalliata, have experienced a dramatic population decline due to persistent habitat loss and poaching. In 2017, BirdLife International changed the species’ status from threatened to endangered and estimated that between 10,000 and 50,000 individuals remained in the wild. An accurate estimate of the number of remaining wild individuals is critical to implementing effective conservation plans. Wright et al. conducted roost count surveys in Costa Rica and Nicaragua during 2016 and published their data in 2019; however, no population data exists for the rest of the range. We conducted roost counts at 28 sites across Mexico, Guatemala, and the Bay Islands in Roatan during 2018 and 2019. We counted 679 birds and combined our data with the published Wright et al. (2019) data for a total of 2361 wild yellow-naped amazons observed across the species’ range. There were fewer roosts detected in the northern region of the range than in the southern region. We found that roosts were most likely to occur in built-up rural and pasture habitat, with 71% found within 100 m of human habitation. Our results illustrate the need for immediate conservation action to mitigate decline, such as enforced legal action against poaching, nest guarding, and increased community education efforts
Understanding the benefits of dynamic line rating under multiple sources of uncertainty
This paper analyses the benefits of dynamic line rating (DLR) in the system with high penetration of wind generation. A probabilistic forecasting model for the line ratings is incorporated into a two-stage stochastic optimization model. The scheduling model, for the first time, considers the uncertainty associated with wind generation, line ratings and line outages to co-optimize the energy production and reserve holding levels in the scheduling stage as well as the re-dispatch actions in the real-time operation stage. Therefore, the benefits of higher utilization of line capacity can be explicitly balanced against the costs of increased holding and utilization of reserve services due to the forecasting error. The computational burden driven by the modelling of multiple sources of uncertainty is tackled by applying an efficient filtering approach. The case studies demonstrate the benefits of DLR in supporting costeffective integration of high penetration of wind generation into the existing network. We also highlight the importance of simultaneously considering the multiple sources of uncertainty in understanding the benefits of DLR. Furthermore, this paper analyses the impact of different operational strategies, the coordination among multiple flexible technologies and installed capacity of wind generation on the benefits of DLR
Capillary filling with wall corrugations] Capillary filling in microchannels with wall corrugations: A comparative study of the Concus-Finn criterion by continuum, kinetic and atomistic approaches
We study the impact of wall corrugations in microchannels on the process of
capillary filling by means of three broadly used methods - Computational Fluid
Dynamics (CFD), Lattice-Boltzmann Equations (LBE) and Molecular Dynamics (MD).
The numerical results of these approaches are compared and tested against the
Concus-Finn (CF) criterion, which predicts pinning of the contact line at
rectangular ridges perpendicular to flow for contact angles theta > 45. While
for theta = 30, theta = 40 (no flow) and theta = 60 (flow) all methods are
found to produce data consistent with the CF criterion, at theta = 50 the
numerical experiments provide different results. Whilst pinning of the liquid
front is observed both in the LB and CFD simulations, MD simulations show that
molecular fluctuations allow front propagation even above the critical value
predicted by the deterministic CF criterion, thereby introducing a sensitivity

Antitumour necrosis factor-α therapy for hidradenitis suppurativa: results from a national cohort study between 2000 and 2013
International audienceHidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a frequent chronic inflammatory skin disease typically characterized by recurrent painful, deep inflammatory nodules of the axillary, breast, groin and gluteal areas. European recommendations are mainly based on expert opinion. Drug treatments are heterogenous (e.g., antibiotics, corticosteroids, retinoids) and lack consensus among expert centres. The most severe disease forms or those failing to respond to conventional drugs may be associated with worsened functional prognosis. Anti-tumor necrosis factor α (anti-TNFα) drugs have been prescribed in these cases. The results of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are discordant. Three RCTs concluded to the efficacy of adalimumab (ADA), and two others did not detect any difference between infliximab (IFX) or etanercept (ETA) and placebo. Finally, data from the literature and reported experiences do not conclude on the efficacy of anti-TNFα drugs for HS. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserve
Efficient and accurate simulations of deformable particles immersed in a fluid using a combined immersed boundary lattice Boltzmann finite element method

Those analytic approximations are used to study the influence of the mesh
tessellation method, the spatial resolution, and the discrete delta function of
the immersed boundary method on the numerical results obtained by a coupled
immersed boundary lattice Boltzmann finite element method. For the description
of the capsule membrane, a finite element method and the Skalak constitutive
model [R. Skalak et al., Strain Energy Function of Red Blood Cell Membranes,
Biophys. J. 13 (1973) 245-264] have been employed. Our primary goal is the
investigation of the presented model for small resolutions to provide a sound
basis for efficient but accurate simulations of multiple deformable particles
immersed in a fluid. We come to the conclusion that details of the membrane
mesh, as tessellation method and resolution, play only a minor role. The
hydrodynamic resolution, i.e., the width of the discrete delta function, can
significantly influence the accuracy of the simulations. The discretization of
the delta function introduces an artificial length scale, which effectively
changes the radius and the deformability of the capsule. We discuss
possibilities of reducing the computing time of simulations of deformable
objects immersed in a fluid while maintaining high accuracy.Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, 3 table
Dealing Automatically with Exceptions by Introducing Specificity in ASP
Answer Set Programming (ASP), via normal logic programs, is known as a suitable framework for default reasoning since it offers both a valid formal model and operational systems. However, in front of a real world knowledge representation problem, it is not easy to represent information in this framework. That is why the present article proposed to deal with this issue by generating in an automatic way the suitable normal logic program from a compact representation of the information. This is done by using a method, based on specificity, that has been developed for default logic and which is adapted here to ASP both in theoretical and practical points of view
Risk of malignant lymphoma associated with human herpesvirus-8: a case–control study in Spain
No overall increased risk of lymphoma associated with antibodies to human herpesvirus-8 was found in 526 lymphomas and 599 controls (odds ratio (OR)=1.04, 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.62-1.75); significant increases were noted for 19 lymphoplasmacytic lymphomas (OR=4.47, 95% CI=1.34-14.85) and nine low-grade lymphoma/lymphoma B-cell NOS (OR=5.82, 95% CI=1.07-31.73)
In vitro activity of novel apramycin-dextran nanoparticles and free apramycin against selected Dutch and Pakistani Klebsiella pneumonia isolates
Klebsiella pneumoniae are bacteria associated with respiratory tract infections and are increasingly becoming resistant to antibiotics, including carbapenems. Apramycin is a veterinary antibiotic that may have the potential to be re-purposed for use in human health, for example, for the treatment of respiratory tract infections after coupling to inhalable nanoparticles. In the present study, the antibiotic apramycin was formulated with single chain polymeric nanoparticles and tested in free and formulated forms against a set of 13 Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates (from the Netherlands and Pakistan) expressing different aminoglycoside resistance phenotypes. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration, Time Kill Kinetics and biofilm experiments were performed providing evidence for the potential efficacy of apramycin and apramycin-based nanomedicines for the treatment of human Klebsiella pneumonia infections
