    Influence of spark plasma sintering parameters on magnetic properties of FeCo alloy

    Equiatomic FeCo alloys with average particle size of 24 μm were sintered using spark plasma sintering (SPS) system at sintering temperatures of 1100, 800, and 850 °C for heating rates 50, 100, 300 °C/min by applying pressure of 50 MPa instantly at room temperature for sintering time of 5 and 15 minutes. The highest saturation induction was achieved at SPS conditions of 50 MPa, 50 °C/min, 1100 °C, without dwelling, of value 2.39 T. The saturation induction was improved with extending sintering time, the coercivity was higher in samples sintered at a fast heating rate in comparison to the slowest heating rate

    Delivering evidence-based interventions for type 1 diabetes in the virtual world - A review of UK practice during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

    Funder: Abbott Diabetes CareFunder: SanofiFunder: Novo NordiskFunder: MedtronicAIMS: This review considers the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on access to interventions for those living with type 1 diabetes and discusses the solutions which have been considered and actioned to ensure ongoing access care. METHODS: We performed a focussed review of the published literature, and the guidelines for changes that have been effected during the pandemic. We also drew from expert recommendations and information about local practice changes for areas where formal data have not been published. RESULTS: Evidence based interventions which support the achievement of improved glucose levels and/or reduction in hypoglycaemia include group structured education to support self-management, insulin pump therapy and continuous glucose monitoring. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic had impacted the ability of diabetes services to deliver these intervention. Multiple adaptations have been put in place - transition to online delivery of education and care, and usage of diabetes technology. CONCLUSIONS: Although various adaptations have been made during the pandemic that have positively influenced uptake of services, there are many areas of delivery that need immediate improvement in the UK. We recommend a proactive approach in recognising the digital divide and inequity in distribution of these changes and we recommend introducing measures to reduce them

    Shape-based peak identification for ChIP-Seq

    We present a new algorithm for the identification of bound regions from ChIP-seq experiments. Our method for identifying statistically significant peaks from read coverage is inspired by the notion of persistence in topological data analysis and provides a non-parametric approach that is robust to noise in experiments. Specifically, our method reduces the peak calling problem to the study of tree-based statistics derived from the data. We demonstrate the accuracy of our method on existing datasets, and we show that it can discover previously missed regions and can more clearly discriminate between multiple binding events.     Chiral Symmetry Breaking and External Fields in the Kuperstein-Sonnenschein Model

    A novel holographic model of chiral symmetry breaking has been proposed by Kuperstein and Sonnenschein by embedding non-supersymmetric probe D7 and anti-D7 branes in the Klebanov-Witten background. We study the dynamics of the probe flavours in this model in the presence of finite temperature and a constant electromagnetic field. In keeping with the weakly coupled field theory intuition, we find the magnetic field promotes spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry whereas the electric field restores it. The former effect is universally known as the "magnetic catalysis" in chiral symmetry breaking. In the presence of an electric field such a condensation is inhibited and a current flows. Thus we are faced with a steady-state situation rather than a system in equilibrium. We conjecture a definition of thermodynamic free energy for this steady-state phase and using this proposal we study the detailed phase structure when both electric and magnetic fields are present in two representative configurations: mutually perpendicular and parallel.Comment: 50 pages, multiple figures, minor typo fixed, references adde

    Homeostasis of metabolites in Escherichia coli on transition from anaerobic to aerobic conditions and the transient secretion of pyruvate

    We have developed a method for rapid quenching of samples taken from chemostat cultures of Escherichia coli that gives reproducible and reliable measurements of extracellular and intracellular metabolites by 1H NMR and have applied it to study the major central metabolites during the transition from anaerobic to aerobic growth. Almost all metabolites showed a gradual change after perturbation with air, consistent with immediate inhibition of pyruvate formate-lyase, dilution of overflow metabolites and induction of aerobic enzymes. Surprisingly, although pyruvate showed almost no change in intracellular concentration, the extracellular concentration transiently increased. The absence of intracellular accumulation of pyruvate suggested that one or more glycolytic enzymes might relocate to the cell membrane. To test this hypothesis, chromosomal pyruvate kinase (pykF) was modified to express either PykF-green fluorescent protein or PykF-FLAG fusion proteins. Measurements showed that PykF-FLAG relocates to the cell membrane within 5 min of aeration and then slowly returns to the cytoplasm, suggesting that on aeration, PykF associates with the membrane to facilitate secretion of pyruvate to maintain constant intracellular levels

    Branching dendrites with resonant membrane: a “sum-over-trips” approach

    Dendrites form the major components of neurons. They are complex branching structures that receive and process thousands of synaptic inputs from other neurons. It is well known that dendritic morphology plays an important role in the function of dendrites. Another important contribution to the response characteristics of a single neuron comes from the intrinsic resonant properties of dendritic membrane. In this paper we combine the effects of dendritic branching and resonant membrane dynamics by generalising the “sum-over-trips” approach (Abbott et al. in Biol Cybernetics 66, 49–60 1991). To illustrate how this formalism can shed light on the role of architecture and resonances in determining neuronal output we consider dual recording and reconstruction data from a rat CA1 hippocampal pyramidal cell.     Coupling models of cattle and farms with models of badgers for predicting the dynamics of bovine tuberculosis (TB)

    Bovine TB is a major problem for the agricultural industry in several countries. TB can be contracted and spread by species other than cattle and this can cause a problem for disease control. In the UK and Ireland, badgers are a recognised reservoir of infection and there has been substantial discussion about potential control strategies. We present a coupling of individual based models of bovine TB in badgers and cattle, which aims to capture the key details of the natural history of the disease and of both species at approximately county scale. The model is spatially explicit it follows a very large number of cattle and badgers on a different grid size for each species and includes also winter housing. We show that the model can replicate the reported dynamics of both cattle and badger populations as well as the increasing prevalence of the disease in cattle. Parameter space used as input in simulations was swept out using Latin hypercube sampling and sensitivity analysis to model outputs was conducted using mixed effect models. By exploring a large and computationally intensive parameter space we show that of the available control strategies it is the frequency of TB testing and whether or not winter housing is practised that have the most significant effects on the number of infected cattle, with the effect of winter housing becoming stronger as farm size increases. Whether badgers were culled or not explained about 5%, while the accuracy of the test employed to detect infected cattle explained less than 3% of the variance in the number of infected cattle

    Languages cool as they expand: Allometric scaling and the decreasing need for new words

    We analyze the occurrence frequencies of over 15 million words recorded in millions of books published during the past two centuries in seven different languages. For all languages and chronological subsets of the data we confirm that two scaling regimes characterize the word frequency distributions, with only the more common words obeying the classic Zipf law. Using corpora of unprecedented size, we test the allometric scaling relation between the corpus size and the vocabulary size of growing languages to demonstrate a decreasing marginal need for new words, a feature that is likely related to the underlying correlations between words. We calculate the annual growth fluctuations of word use which has a decreasing trend as the corpus size increases, indicating a slowdown in linguistic evolution following language expansion. This ‘‘cooling pattern’’ forms the basis of a third statistical regularity, which unlike the Zipf and the Heaps law, is dynamical in nature

    The Structure of the Non-SUSY Baryonic Branch of Klebanov-Strassler

    We study the two-dimensional space of supergravity solutions corresponding to non-supersymmetric deformations of the baryonic branch of Klebanov-Strassler. By combining analytical methods with a numerical survey of the parameter space, we find that this solution space includes as limits the softly-broken N=1 solutions of Gubser et al. and those of Dymarsky and Kuperstein. We also identify a one-dimensional family of solutions corresponding to a natural non-supersymmetric generalisation of Klebanov-Strassler, and one corresponding to the limit in which supersymmetry is completely absent, even in the far UV. For almost all of the parameter space we find indications that much of the structure of the supersymmetric baryonic branch survives.Comment: 29 pages plus appendices, 11 figure
