Stable homotopy, 1-dimensional NCCW complexes, and Property (H)
In this paper, we show that the homomorphisms between two unital
one-dimensional NCCW complexes with the same KK-class are stably homotopic,
i.e., with adding on a common homomorphism (with finite dimensional image),
they are homotopic. As a consequence, any one-dimensional NCCW complex has the

Twisted k-graph algebras associated to Bratteli diagrams
Given a system of coverings of k-graphs, we show that the cohomology of the
resulting (k+1)-graph is isomorphic to that of any one of the k-graphs in the
system. We then consider Bratteli diagrams of 2-graphs whose twisted
C*-algebras are matrix algebras over noncommutative tori. For such systems we
calculate the ordered K-theory and the gauge-invariant semifinite traces of the
resulting 3-graph C*-algebras. We deduce that every simple C*-algebra of this
form is Morita equivalent to the C*-algebra of a rank-2 Bratteli diagram in the

Exposure of benthic invertebrates to sediment vibration: From laboratory experiments to outdoor simulated pile-driving

This stimuli may interfere with crucial behaviors such as foraging and predator avoidance, and the sensitivity to vibration is largely unknown. Here, the responsiveness of benthic invertebrates to sediment vibration is discussed in relation to laboratory and semi-field trials with two marine species: the mussel (Mytilus edulis) and hermit crab (Pagurus bernhardus). Sensory threshold curves were produced for both species in controlled laboratory conditions, followed by small-scale pile-driving exposures in the field. The merits of behavioral indicators are discussed, in addition to using physiological measures, as a method of determining reception and measuring responses. The measurement and sensors required for sediment vibration quantification are also discussed. Response and threshold data were related to measurements taken in the vicinity of anthropogenic sources, allowing a link between responsiveness and actual operations. The impact of pile-driving on sediment-dwelling invertebrates has received relatively little research, yet the data here suggest that such activities are likely to impact key coastal species which play important roles within the marine environment.LR would like to thank the organizers and sponsors of the 2016 conference for

The paper studies large sample asymptotic properties of the Maximum
Likelihood Estimator (MLE) for the parameter of a continuous time Markov chain,
observed in white noise. Using the method of weak convergence of likelihoods
due to I.Ibragimov and R.Khasminskii, consistency, asymptotic normality and
convergence of moments are established for MLE under certain strong ergodicity

The flavour symmetry: Neutrino masses and mixings
We discuss the neutrino masses and mixings as the realization of an
flavour permutational symmetry in two models, namely the Standard Model and an
extension of the Standard Model with three Higgs doublets. In the
Standard Model, mass matrices of the same generic form are obtained for the
neutrinos and charged leptons when the flavour symmetry is broken
sequentially. In the minimal -symmetric extension of the Standard Model,
the symmetry is left unbroken, and the concept of flavour is extended to
the Higgs sector by introducing in the theory three Higgs fields which are
SU(2) doublets. In both models, the mass matrices of the neutrino and charged
leptons are reparametrized in terms of their eigenvalues, and exact, explicit
analytical expressions for the neutrino mixing angles as functions of the
masses of neutrinos and charged leptons are obtained. In the case of the
Standard Model, from a fit of the theoretical expressions of the
lepton mixing matrix to the values extracted from experiment, the numerical
values of the neutrino mixing angles are obtained in excellent agreement with
experimental data. In the extension of the Standard Model, if two of the
right handed neutrinos masses are degenerate, the reactor and atmospheric
mixing angles are determined by the masses of the charged leptons, yielding
in excellent agreement with experimental data, and
different from zero but very small. If the masses of the three right handed
neutrinos are assumed to be different, then it is possible to get
also in very good agreement with experimental data. We also show the branching
ratios of some selected flavour changing neutral currents (FCNC) process as
well as the contribution of the exchange of a neutral flavour changing scalar

Bayesian switching multiple disorder problems
The switching multiple disorder problem seeks to determine an ordered infinite sequence of times of alarms which are as close as possible to the unknown times of disorders, or change-points, at which the observable process changes its probability characteristics. We study a Bayesian formulation of this problem for an observable Brownian motion with switching constant drift rates. The method of proof is based on the reduction of the initial problem to an associated optimal switching problem for a three-dimensional diffusion posterior probability process and the analysis of the equivalent coupled parabolic-type free-boundary problem. We derive analytic-form estimates for the Bayesian risk function and the optimal switching boundaries for the components of the posterior probability process
Facilitator, Functionary, Friend or Foe? Studying the Role of iPads within Learning Activities Across a School Year
We present the findings from a longitudinal study of iPad use in a Primary school classroom. While tablet devices have
found their way into classroom environments, we still lack in depth and long-term studies of how they integrate into everyday classroom activities. Our findings illustrate in-classroom tablet use and the broad range of learning activities in subjects such as maths, languages, social sciences, and even physical education. Our observations expand current models on teaching and learning supported by tablet technology. Our findings are child-centred, focusing on three different roles that tablets can play as part of learning activities: Friend, Functionary, and Facilitator. This new perspective on in-classroom tablet use can facilitate critical discussions around the integration and impact of these devices in the educational context, from a design and educational point of view
Human helminth therapy to treat inflammatory disorders - where do we stand?
Parasitic helminths have evolved together with the mammalian immune system over many millennia and as such they have become remarkably efficient modulators in order to promote their own survival. Their ability to alter and/or suppress immune responses could be beneficial to the host by helping control excessive inflammatory responses and animal models and pre-clinical trials have all suggested a beneficial effect of helminth infections on inflammatory bowel conditions, MS, asthma and atopy. Thus, helminth therapy has been suggested as a possible treatment method for autoimmune and other inflammatory disorders in humans
Mathematical Evaluation of Community Level Impact of Combining Bed Nets and Indoor Residual Spraying upon Malaria Transmission in Areas where the main Vectors are Anopheles Arabiensis Mosquitoes.
Indoor residual insecticide spraying (IRS) and long-lasting insecticide treated nets (LLINs) are commonly used together even though evidence that such combinations confer greater protection against malaria than either method alone is inconsistent. A deterministic model of mosquito life cycle processes was adapted to allow parameterization with results from experimental hut trials of various combinations of untreated nets or LLINs (Olyset, PermaNet 2.0, Icon Life nets) with IRS (pirimiphos methyl, lambda cyhalothrin, DDT), in a setting where vector populations are dominated by Anopheles arabiensis, so that community level impact upon malaria transmission at high coverage could be predicted. Intact untreated nets alone provide equivalent personal protection to all three LLINs. Relative to IRS plus untreated nets, community level protection is slightly higher when Olyset or PermaNet 2.0 nets are added onto IRS with pirimiphos methyl or lambda cyhalothrin but not DDT, and when Icon Life nets supplement any of the IRS insecticides. Adding IRS onto any net modestly enhances communal protection when pirimiphos methyl is sprayed, while spraying lambda cyhalothrin enhances protection for untreated nets but not LLINs. Addition of DDT reduces communal protection when added to LLINs. Where transmission is mediated primarily by An. arabiensis, adding IRS to high LLIN coverage provides only modest incremental benefit (e.g. when an organophosphate like pirimiphos methyl is used), but can be redundant (e.g. when a pyrethroid like lambda cyhalothin is used) or even regressive (e.g. when DDT is used for the IRS). Relative to IRS plus untreated nets, supplementing IRS with LLINs will only modestly improve community protection. Beyond the physical protection that intact nets provide, additional protection against transmission by An. arabiensis conferred by insecticides will be remarkably small, regardless of whether they are delivered as LLINs or IRS. The insecticidal action of LLINs and IRS probably already approaches their absolute limit of potential impact upon this persistent vector so personal protection of nets should be enhanced by improving the physical integrity and durability. Combining LLINs and non-pyrethroid IRS in residual transmission systems may nevertheless be justified as a means to manage insecticide resistance and prevent potential rebound of not only An. arabiensis, but also more potent, vulnerable and historically important species such as Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles funestus
