    Discovery of new TeV supernova remnant shells in the Galactic plane with H.E.S.S

    Supernova remnants (SNRs) are prime candidates for efficient particle acceleration up to the knee in the cosmic ray particle spectrum. In this work we present a new method for a systematic search for new TeV-emitting SNR shells in 2864 hours of H.E.S.S. phase I data used for the H.E.S.S. Galactic Plane Survey. This new method, which correctly identifies the known shell morphologies of the TeV SNRs covered by the survey, HESS J1731-347, RX 1713.7-3946, RCW 86, and Vela Junior, reveals also the existence of three new SNR candidates. All three candidates were extensively studied regarding their morphological, spectral, and multi-wavelength (MWL) properties. HESS J1534-571 was associated with the radio SNR candidate G323.7-1.0, and thus is classified as an SNR. HESS J1912+101 and HESS J1614-518, on the other hand, do not have radio or X-ray counterparts that would permit to identify them firmly as SNRs, and therefore they remain SNR candidates, discovered first at TeV energies as such. Further MWL follow up observations are needed to confirm that these newly discovered SNR candidates are indeed SNRs

Within the last few years we established a micro fluidic platform including a peristaltic micro pump as well as several valves, manifolds and micro channels [1]. For optical online monitoring the micro fluidic system is bonded to a glass slide. Furthermore the biochip is fixed on an electrically heated support. The pneumatically actuated peristaltic pump as well as the temperature control is performed by a control device. For the fluorescence based online monitoring a robotic guided fluorescence measurement module was developed, which supports the detection of fluorescence in microtiter plates and microfluidic systems. This measurement module allows the fluorescence detection of two different excitation / detection wavelengths (480 / 530 nm and 570 / 620 nm) and was successfully characterised using EGFP and Rhodamine 6G.     XMM-Newton observation of the persistent Be/NS X-ray binary pulsar RX J1037.5-5647 in a low luminosity state

    The spectra of several X-ray binary pulsars display a clear soft excess, which in most cases can be described with a blackbody model, above the main power-law component. While in the high-luminosity sources it is usually characterized by low temperature (kT 100 km), in the two persistent and low-luminosity pulsars 4U 0352+309 and RX J0146.9+6121 this component has a high temperature (kT > 1 keV) and a smaller radius (R < 0.5 km), consistent with the estimated size of the neutron-star polar cap. Here we report on the timing and spectral analysis of RX J1037.5-5647, another low-luminosity persistent Be binary pulsar, based on the first XMM-Newton observation of this source. We have found a best-fit period P = 853.4(+/-0.2) s, that implies an average pulsar spin-up dP/dt ~ -2E-8 s/s in the latest decade. The estimated source luminosity is Lx ~ 10^34 erg/s, a value comparable to that of the other persistent Be binary pulsars and about one order of magnitude lower than in most of the previous measurements. The source spectrum can be described with a power law plus blackbody model, with kTbb = 1.26(+0.16/-0.09) keV and Rbb = 128(+13/-21) m, suggesting a polar-cap origin of this component. These results strengthen the hypothesis that, in addition to low luminosities and long periods, this class of sources is characterized also by common spectral propertiesComment: 9 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables.     Highly absorbed X-ray binaries in the Small Magellanic Cloud

    Many of the high mass X-ray binaries (HMXRBs) discovered in recent years in our Galaxy are characterized by a high absorption, most likely intrinsic to the system, which hampers their detection at the softest X-ray energies. We have undertaken a search for highly-absorbed X-ray sources in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) with a systematic analysis of 62 XMM-Newton SMC observations. We obtained a sample of 30 sources showing evidence for an equivalent hydrogen column density larger than 3x10^23 cm^-2. Five of these sources are clearly identified as HMXRBs: four were already known (including three X-ray pulsars) and one, XMM J005605.8-720012, reported here for the first time. For the latter, we present optical spectroscopy confirming the association with a Be star in the SMC. The other sources in our sample have optical counterparts fainter than magnitude ~16 in the V band, and many of them have possible NIR counterparts consistent with highly reddened early type stars in the SMC. While their number is broadly consistent with the expected population of background highly-absorbed active galactic nuclei, a few of them could be HMXRBs in which an early type companion is severely reddened by local material.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables.     The steppe and forest-steppe zone of Western Siberia is one of the core ­regions of the Eurasian continent. Among the sites in the Siberian Forest steppe, those of the Andronovo (Fёdorovo) cultural community occupy a ­special position. In the northern Baraba Forest steppe many burial sites of these communities are known, including the large necropolises of Tartas 1, a long-term joint excavation of the Eurasia-Department and the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology in Novosibirsk. However, nearly no settlements associated with the necropolises were known and it was a mystery, where the population lived at that time. In 2020, such an Andronovo (Fёdorovo) settlement site was discovered near the village of Vengerovo, Novosibirisk region; excavations started in 2021. The location of this site was surprising. Unlike other settlements, the site of Tartas 5 is located not on the riverbank but in the floodplain of the Tartas River. The site revealed a stratigraphy with two cultural horizons and sterile sediments in-between, stemming from ­repeated flooding of the plain. The lower stratum is associated with the ­Andronovo (Fёdorovo) cultural community, the upper layer dates most likely to the Iron Age. A short overview of complexes, layers, and the animal bone collection analyzed in 2021 is given. First dates place into the 15th/14th ­century BCE

    Pyruvic acid in the boreal forest : gas-phase mixing ratios and impact on radical chemistry

    Pyruvic acid (CH3C(O)C(O)OH, 2-oxopropanoic acid) is an organic acid of biogenic origin that plays a crucial role in plant metabolism, is present in tropospheric air in both gas-phase and aerosol-phase, and is implicated in the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). Up to now, only a few field studies have reported mixing ratios of gas-phase pyruvic acid, and its tropospheric sources and sinks are poorly constrained. We present the first measurements of gas-phase pyruvic acid in the boreal forest as part of the IBAIRN (Influence of Biosphere–Atmosphere Interactions on the Reactive Nitrogen budget) field campaign in Hyytiälä, Finland, in September 2016. The mean pyruvic acid mixing ratio during IBAIRN was 96 pptv, with a maximum value of 327 pptv. From our measurements we estimated the overall pyruvic acid source strength and quantified the contributions of isoprene oxidation and direct emissions from vegetation in this monoterpene-dominated forested environment. Further, we discuss the relevance of gas-phase pyruvic acid for atmospheric chemistry by investigating the impact of its photolysis on acetaldehyde and peroxy radical production rates.     Guided wave optics in periodically poled KTP: quadratic nonlinearity and prospects for attosecond jitter characterization

    For the first time to our knowledge, continuous nonsegmented channel waveguides in periodically poled KTiOPO4 with guided orthogonal polarizations are used to demonstrate type II background-free second harmonic generation in the telecom band with 1.6%/(W cm2) normalized conversion efficiency. This constitutes a 90-fold improvement in aggregate conversion efficiency over its free space counterpart. Simulations show that the guided wave device should enable the measurement of timing fluctuations of optical pulse trains at the attosecond level in an optical cross correlation scheme
