Manuscript contexts and the transmission of the Agnus Castus herbal in MS Sloane 3160

MS Sloane 3160 is a miscellaneous volume containing one copy of the herbal Agnus Castus in Middle English. Traditionally, editions focused on texts in isolation and did not look in detail to the rest of the material, diminishing the potential of manuscript contexts in explaining how texts flow and are received by a specific audience. If we consider these groupings of texts a collective product in which all the co-texts are part of an internal dialogue, the importance of looking at the whole volume from a collective perspective becomes paramount in understanding the final aim of the compiler, and the processes of transmission of text and/or texts. The objective of this article has been to study the arrangement of the material contained in MS Sloane 3160 as a starting point to frame future comparison with manuscripts containing the same herbal. The results point to the identification of patterns which would confirm the “anthologistic impulse” (Lerer 2000). The structure of this manuscript would contain a spectrum of the most important areas that would cover the contents of a typical vademecum of the time, including religious texts, but more studies are needed in order to be able to assess these contexts in medical miscellanies. The impact and transmission of the Agnus Castus herbal needs to be studied collectively, and assessing the manuscript contexts in which the text is naturally embedded points to the right direction in understanding all the processes therein

El profesorado de Secundaria. Hacia un nuevo perfil profesional para enfrentar los problemas de la educación contemporánea

El objeto de este artículo es ofrecer una visión de los cambios sociales, políticos y económicos que han transformado el contenido y la orientación del trabajo de los profesores. Nuestras instituciones educativas actuales se han visto afectadas por la acción de un profundo y rápido cambio social. Estamos intentando remodelar nuestros sistemas de enseñanza y nuestros programas de formación de profesores para adaptarlos a los profundos cambios sociales y educativos, pero nuestras reformas se han planteado en una época marcada por la desilusión. El paso desde un sistema educativo elitista a otro de educación general no sólo ha afectado cuantitativamente al número de alumnos y profesores, sino que ha planteado complejos problemas de calidad; apareciendo dificultades inesperadas para alcanzar una educación de calidad. Esta nueva situación exige de nuestros profesores una nueva forma de pensar en la educación y la introducción de cambios metodológicos innovadores. Enseñar hoy es mucho más difícil que hace veinte años, y plantea a nuestros profesores nuevos desafíos de cara al futuro.The purpose of this paper is to offer a view of social, political and economic changes transforming the meaning and the orientation of the work of teachers in education. Rapid and profound social change has deeply affected our present-day teaching institutions. When our societies have been so profoundly changed we remodel our teaching systems and programs of teachers' training, but, the educational reforms were formulated in a new time marked by disenchantment about education. The change from a system designed to educate an elite to one of mass-education not only increased the numbers of teachers and pupils, it also brought perplexing problems related to quality. How to achieve high standards of education in these circumstances is a personal and social challenge that needs much creative thought and determination from teachers. Teaching today is much more difficult than twenty years ago, and presents to teachers new challenges for the future

La vertebración académica de la formación inicial del profesorado

Los contenidos de la formación inicial del profesor deben adecuarse a la realidad práctica de la enseñanza en un contexto social caracterizado por la aceleración del cambio. Esto implica capacitar al profesor para cuatro cuestiones: comunicar en el aula; identificar el propio estilo docente y las reacciones que produce en sus alumnos; tener recursos para afrontar los problemas prácticos que surgen en el grupo de clase; saber adaptar los contenidos de la enseñanza a los niveles de conocimiento de los alumnos. En este enfoque juegan un papel clave las prácticas docentes tutorizadas, concebidas no como un elemento añadido a la formación teórica, sino como el auténtico elemento vertebrador de la formación inicial del profesor

Presente y futuro de nuevas estrategias en el proceso enseñanza-aprendizaje en la formación universitaria

Este informe presenta el contenido y las conclusiones alcanzadas en la mesa de comunicaciones número 12, que tuvo lugar el jueves, día 2 de julio de 2015, de 16.30 a 20.00 horas en el Aulario II en el aula A2/E01 de la Universidad de Alicante y que forma parte de las actividades programadas para las XIII Jornadas de Redes de Investigación en Docencia Universitaria 2015, organizadas por el Instituto de Ciencias de la Educación y el Vicerrectorado de Estudios, Formación y Calidad de la Universidad de Alicante. Las aportaciones giraron en torno al análisis de metodologías apropiadas y adaptadas al actual proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje universitario. A través de ellas se han aportado para su debate a la comunidad universitaria los resultados de los trabajos de investigación desarrollados básicamente en dos áreas de conocimiento las filologías inglesa y catalana, y la histología. Aunque en apariencia dos áreas de conocimiento muy dispares, la realidad es que al analizar el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje con perspectivas de futuro, la unidad temática ha quedado garantizada y los debates posteriores a las respectivas exposiciones, fueron altamente significativas

Medical terminology across the centuries: distinctive features of a chronological study in the field of ophthalmology

This article deals with the comparison of the lexical features of two texts from a diachronic point of view. Interest in lexical comparison arises from the fact that the two texts belong to a specialised field within medicine –ophthalmology– and both can be considered of the same genre. The linguistic analysis focuses on morphological and etymological aspects, based on previous studies with a historical perspective in the field of medicine (Norri, 1992). As a result of the study, different implications concerning the use of words from the Germanic native stock or from other sources, together with the different social and scientific changes, are shown in this article
