Depictions of Laestadianism 1850–1950

The issue to be discussed here is how society’s views of the Laestadian revival has changed over the course of the revival movement’s first 100 years. The article claims that society’s emerging view of the revival is characterized by two different positions. The first period is typical of the last part of the nineteenth century and is characterized by the fact that the evaluation of the revival took as its point of departure the instigator of the revival, Lars Levi Laestadius (1800–61). The characteristic of Laestadius himself would, it was thought, be characteristic of the movement he had instigated. During this first period, the revival was sharply criticized. This negative attitude gradually changed from the turn of the century onwards. The second period is characterized by greater openness towards understanding the revival on its own premises. This openness showed itself at first in Swedish publications that treated the revival in an exotic fashion with the aim to arouse greater interest in the Swedish cultural life in the north. This interest in the distinctive qualities of the revival was later also expressed in Norway, thus contributing to a change of view in how society viewed Laestadianism. Typical of the second period is that it was primarily in the ecclesiastical environment that a new interest in the revival established itself

Approaching Laestadianism

The aim of this thematic issue on research on the Laestadian movement is to dwell with and look back on how the research on Laestadius and the Laestadian movement has developed, but at the same time show the latest developments in this research. In order to do so, researchers from the Nordic countries contributed to this thematic issue on research perspectives on the Laestadian movement. ‘Approaching Laestadianism’ presents theoretical articles and research overviews in order to present updates and tendencies in the research about the Laestadian movement

Polymer-based microfluidic device for measuring membrane protein activities

Functional assays of membrane proteins are becoming increasingly important, both in research and drug discovery applications. The majority of current assays use the patch-clamp technology to measure the activity of ion channels which are over-expressed in cells. In future, in vitro assay systems will be available, which use reconstituted membrane proteins in free-standing lipid bilayers suspended in nano- or micrometer-sized pores. Such functional assays require (1) expression, purification and reconstitution of the membrane protein of interest, (2) a reliable method for lipid bilayer formation and membrane protein integration, and (3) a sensitive detection system. For practical applications, especially for automation, the reliable and controllable transport of fluids is essential. In order to achieve a stable free-standing lipid bilayer, a pore diameter in the micro- to nanometer range is essential. Novel microfluidic devices were developed by bonding a thick (300μm) polyether ether ketone foil, bearing a channel structure, to a thin (12μm) foil with a micropore of about 10μm diameter and then utilized for the formation of stable, free-standing lipid bilayers within the pore. Læstadianismens Jerusalem

The article examines the early ecclesiology of the Firstborn Laestadians in Northern Sweden and Norway where the geographical concept of “Lappland” (lappmark) became a significant term for the Laestadian congregations. The meaning of this term is interpreted in light of the Laestadians’ reading of the Bible in which the image of the biblical Jerusalem as the center for early Christianity is related to the Firstborn’s administrative center for their revival movement, Gällivare in the Western part of Swedish Lappland. Other Laestadians did not agree with this interpretation and developed analogous ideas of their own administrative centers

I kjølvannet av denne åpenheten, har dermed det religiøse livet blomstret kraftig opp og blir i økende grad akseptert av myndighetene. Denne artikkelen søker å gi en historisk orientert oversikt over mangfoldet i vietnamesisk religion, samt drøfte nyere internasjonale forskningsbidrag om temaer knyttet til religiøs praksis i dagens Vietnam

On the use of blow up to study regularizations of singularities of piecewise smooth dynamical systems in R3\mathbb{R}^3

In this paper we use the blow up method of Dumortier and Roussarie \cite{dumortier_1991,dumortier_1993,dumortier_1996}, in the formulation due to Krupa and Szmolyan \cite{krupa_extending_2001}, to study the regularization of singularities of piecewise smooth dynamical systems \cite{filippov1988differential} in $\mathbb R^3$. Using the regularization method of Sotomayor and Teixeira \cite{Sotomayor96}, first we demonstrate the power of our approach by considering the case of a fold line. We quickly recover a main result of Bonet and Seara \cite{reves_regularization_2014} in a simple manner. Then, for the two-fold singularity, we show that the regularized system only fully retains the features of the singular canards in the piecewise smooth system in the cases when the sliding region does not include a full sector of singular canards. In particular, we show that every locally unique primary singular canard persists the regularizing perturbation. For the case of a sector of primary singular canards, we show that the regularized system contains a canard, provided a certain non-resonance condition holds. Finally, we provide numerical evidence for the existence of secondary canards near resonance.Comment: To appear in SIAM Journal of Applied Dynamical System
