A short survey on nonlinear models of the classic Costas loop: rigorous derivation and limitations of the classic analysis
Rigorous nonlinear analysis of the physical model of Costas loop --- a
classic phase-locked loop (PLL) based circuit for carrier recovery, is a
challenging task. Thus for its analysis, simplified mathematical models and
numerical simulation are widely used. In this work a short survey on nonlinear
models of the BPSK Costas loop, used for pre-design and post-design analysis,
is presented. Their rigorous derivation and limitations of classic analysis are
discussed. It is shown that the use of simplified mathematical models, and the
application of non rigorous methods of analysis (e.g., simulation and
linearization) may lead to wrong conclusions concerning the performance of the
Costas loop physical model.Comment: Accepted to American Control Conference (ACC) 2015 (Chicago, USA

A Comparison of Petri Net Semantics under the Collective Token Philosophy
In recent years, several semantics for place/transition Petri nets have been proposed that adopt the collective token philosophy. We investigate distinctions and similarities between three such models, namely configuration structures, concurrent transition systems, and (strictly) symmetric (strict) monoidal categories. We use the notion of adjunction to express each connection. We also present a purely logical description of the collective token interpretation of net behaviours in terms of theories and theory morphisms in partial membership equational logic
Remote sensing applications to resource problems in South Dakota
The author has identified the following significant results. Change in the vegetative structure was taking place in the Black Hills. Temporal analysis of the areal extent of open meadows was accomplished using black and white and color infrared aerial photography. A reduction of nearly 1100 hectares of open meadows was determined using photointerpretation. Techniques were developed for the management of meandering lakes, including use of LANDSAT imagery for continuous monitoring, classification of hydrophytes on low altitude CIR imagery, and planning and evaluation of improvements and multiple uses on aerial photography and photo mosaics. LANDSAT data were analyzed statistically from small and entire study scene areas to determine the effect of soils stratifications of corn signatures. Band 5 early season and band 7 later season recorded the strongest evidence of the influence of soils on corn signatures. Significant strata were determined by a multiple range test
Remote sensing applications to resource problems in South Dakota
Cooperative projects between RSI and numerous South Dakota agencies have provided a means of incorporating remote sensing techniques into operational programs. Eight projects discussed in detail are: (1) detection of high moisture zones near interstate 90; (2) thermal infrared census of Canada geese in South Dakota; (3) dutch elm disease detection in urban environment; (4) a feasibility study for monitoring effective precipitation in South Dakota using TIROS-N; (5) open and abandoned dump sites in Spink county; (6) the influence of soil reflectance on LANDSAT signatures of crops; (7) A model implementation program for Lake Herman watershed; and (8) the Six-Mile Creek investigation follow-on
A microscopic semiclassical confining field equation for lattice gauge theory in 2+1 dimensions
We present a semiclassical nonlinear field equation for the confining field
in 2+1--dimensional lattice gauge theory (compact QED). The equation is
derived directly from the underlying microscopic quantum Hamiltonian by means
of truncation. Its nonlinearities express the dynamic creation of magnetic
monopole currents leading to the confinement of the electric field between two
static electric charges. We solve the equation numerically and show that it can
be interpreted as a London relation in a dual superconductor.Comment: 21 pages, epsf postscript figures included, full postscript available

Measurement of 25Mg(p; gamma)26Al resonance strengths via gamma spectrometry
The COMPTEL instrument performed the first mapping of the 1.809 MeV photons
in the Galaxy, triggering considerable interest in determing the sources of
interstellar 26Al. The predicted 26Al is too low compared to the observation,
for a better understanding more accurate rates for the 25Mg(p; gamma)26Al
reaction are required. The 25Mg(p;gamma)26Al reaction has been investigated at
the resonances at Er= 745; 418; 374; 304 keV at Ruhr-Universitat-Bochum using a
Tandem accelerator and a 4piNaI detector. In addition the resonance at Er = 189
keV has been measured deep underground laboratory at Laboratori Nazionali del
Gran Sasso, exploiting the strong suppression of cosmic background. This low
resonance has been studied with the 400 kV LUNA accelerator and a HPGe
detector. The preliminary results of the resonance strengths will be reported.Comment: Accepted for publication in Journal of Physics
Calibrating the relation of low-frequency radio continuum to star formation rate at 1 kpc scale with LOFAR
9 figures, 6 tables and 17 pages. This paper is part of the LOFAR surveys data release 1 and has been accepted for publication in a special edition of A&A that will appear in Feb 2019, volume 622. The catalogues and images from the data release will be publicly available on lofar-surveys.org upon publication of the journal. Reproduced with permission from Astronomy & Astrophysics. © 2018 ESO.Radio continuum (RC) emission in galaxies allows us to measure star formation rates (SFRs) unaffected by extinction due to dust, of which the low-frequency part is uncontaminated from thermal (free-free) emission. We calibrate the conversion from the spatially resolved 140 MHz RC emission to the SFR surface density () at 1 kpc scale. We used recent observations of three galaxies (NGC 3184, 4736, and 5055) from the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS), and archival LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR) data of NGC 5194. Maps were created with the facet calibration technique and converted to radio maps using the Condon relation. We compared these maps with hybrid maps from a combination of GALEX far-ultraviolet and Spitzer 24 data using plots tracing the relation at -kpc resolution. The RC emission is smoothed with respect to the hybrid owing to the transport of cosmic-ray electrons (CREs). This results in a sublinear relation , where (140 MHz) and (1365 MHz). Both relations have a scatter of . If we restrict ourselves to areas of young CREs (; ), the relation becomes almost linear at both frequencies with and a reduced scatter of . We then simulate the effect of CRE transport by convolving the hybrid maps with a Gaussian kernel until the RC-SFR relation is linearised; CRE transport lengths are -5 kpc. Solving the CRE diffusion equation, we find diffusion coefficients of - at 1 GeV. A RC-SFR relation at GHz can be exploited to measure SFRs at redshift using MHz observations.Peer reviewe
Recent AEM Case Study Examples of a Full Waveform Time-Domain System for Near-Surface and Groundwater Applications
Early time or high frequency airborne electromagnetic data (AEM) are desirable for shallow sounding or mapping of resistive areas but this poses difficulties due to a variety of issues, such as system bandwidth, system calibration and parasitic loop capacitance. In an effort to address this issue, a continued system design strategy, aimed at improving its early-channel VTEM data, has achieved fully calibrated, quantitative measurements closer to the transmitter current turn-off, while maintaining reasonably optimal deep penetration characteristics. The new design implementation, known as “Full Waveform” VTEM was previously described by Legault et al. (2012). This paper presents some case-study examples of a Full Waveform helicopter time-domain EM system for near-surface application
