Study and suppression of the microstructural anisotropy generated during the consolidation of a carbonyl iron powder by field-assisted hot pressing
Published OnlineA spherical carbonyl iron powder was consolidated by the field-assisted hot pressing technique using graphite tools at two different temperatures, both above the austenitizing temperature. The microstructures obtained exhibited a compositional gradient in carbon along the consolidated material. Thus, the outer rim of the cylindrical samples was composed of cementite and pearlite that gradually turned to pearlite, leading to a fully ferritic microstructure at the core of the sample. The increase in the temperature has led to a higher introduction of carbon within the sample. The interposition of a thin tungsten foil between the graphite die/punches and the powders has significantly reduced the diffusion of the carbon through the iron matrix and has suppressed the microstructural anisotropy.Publicad
Investigating the effect of synthesis selection on O3-sodium layered oxide structural changes and electrochemical properties
Transition metal (TM) layered oxides constitute a promising family of materials for use in Na-ion battery cathodes. Here O3-Na (Ni1/3Mn1/3Fe1/3) O2 was synthesised using optimised sol-gel and solid-state routes, and the physico- and electrochemical natures of the resulting materials were thoroughly studied. Significant differences in electrochemical behaviour were observed, and the use of in operando XRD determined this stemmed from the suppression of the P3 phase in the sol-gel material during cycling. This was attributable to differences in the degree of transition metal migration in the materials ensuing from the selection of synthetic route. This demonstrates that not only the choice of material, but also that of synthesis route, can have dramatic impact on the resulting structural and electrochemical nature, making such considerations critical in the future development of advanced Na-ion cathode materials
Merkel cell carcinoma in a 17-year-old boy, report of a highly aggressive fatal case and review of the literature
Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare tumor frequently involving the skin with an aggressive behavior and fatal outcome. It occurs mostly in the caucasian race between 60–80 years of age and it is rare in children. Herein we report our experience with a highly aggressive fatal Merkel cell carcinoma in an immunocompetent 17-year-old boy. Its characteristics and treatment modalities will be also discussed
Ascites due to right atrial myxoma in a haemodialysis patient
BACKGROUND: Persistent fluid overload in patients on renal replacement therapy despite good dialysis adequacy or obvious cardiac dysfunction should prompt a search for rarer causes. CASE PRESENTATION: We report here a rare cause of persistent peripheral oedema and ascites in a well-dialysed patient. CT scanning revealed a right atrial myxoma that was later confirmed on an echocardiogram. CONCLUSION: Fluid overload states are common in patients on dialysis. Common causes are inadequacy of dialysis and non-compliance. Where aetiology is not easily apparent further investigations into rarer causes should be sought
Assessment of parental asthma knowledge with the Newcastle Asthma Knowledge Questionnaire
Objective: to determine the level of asthma knowledge in parents of asthmatic children followed in a pediatric respiratory ward.
Material and methods: descriptive and cross-sectional study. Asthma Knowledge was assessed using the Newcastle Asthma Knowledge Questionnaire (NAQK). We performed a questionnaire to parents and other relatives of asthmatic children treated in the pediatric pulmonary ward of a tertiary hospital. The surveys were conducted between September and November 2009.
Results: the sample consisted of 344 questionnaires. The mothers answered 72.7%, the fathers 14.9%, both parents filled the questionnaire in 6.7% and 5.8% were filled by a different person. Patients were 203 boys (59%) and 141 girls (41%) with a mean age of 8 ± 4 years. The average score was 18.5 ± 3.7 points out of 31.
Conclusions: our respondents have obtained higher mean score compared to similar samples in other studies. Nevertheless we believe that an educational intervention can improve asthma knowledge and help decrease the morbidity of this chronic disease

A Catalog of Compact Groups of Galaxies in the SDSS Commissioning Data
Compact groups (CGs) of galaxies -- relatively poor groups of galaxies in
which the typical separations between members is of the order of a galaxy
diameter -- offer an exceptional laboratory for the study of dense galaxian
environments with short (<1Gyr) dynamical time-scales. In this paper, we
present an objectively defined catalog of CGs in 153 sq deg of the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release (SDSS EDR). To identify CGs, we applied a
modified version of Hickson's (1982) criteria aimed at finding the highest
density CGs and thus reducing the number of chance alignments. Our catalog
contains 175 CGs down to a limiting galaxy magnitude of r* = 21. The resulting
catalog has a median depth of approximately z = 0.13, substantially deeper than
previous CG catalogs. Since the SDSS will eventually image up to one quarter of
the celestial sphere, we expect our final catalog, based upon the completed
SDSS, will contain on the order of 5,000 - 10,000 CGs. This catalog will be
useful for conducting studies of the general characteristics of CGs, their
environments, and their component galaxies.Comment: 61 pages, 15 figures (Figs. 13, 14, 15 are jpegs). Atlas of compact
groups (Fig. 16) is available at http://home.fnal.gov/~sallam/LeeCG/ .

Experience With Bexarotene to Treat Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphomas: A Study of the Spanish Working Group of Cutaneous Lymphomas
Background and objectives: Bexarotene has been approved to treat advanced stage cutaneous T -cell lymphomas (CTCL) since 1999. However, very few data have been published on its long-term safety and efficacy profile. The aim of this study is to determine the tolerability to bexarotene and outcomes by collecting the 2nd largest case series to date on its long-term use vs CTCL. Material and method: This was a multicenter retrospective review of 216 patients with mycosis fungoides (174), or S & eacute;zary syndrome (42) on a 10 -year course of bexarotene alone or in combination with other therapies at 19 tertiary referral teaching hospitals. Results: A total of 133 men (62%) and 83 women (38%) were included, with a mean age of 63.5 year (27 - 95). A total of 45% were on bexarotene monotherapy for the entire study period, 22% started on bexarotene but eventually received an additional therapy, 13% were on another treatment but eventually received bexarotene while the remaining 20% received a combination therapy since the beginning. The median course of treatment was 20.78 months (1 - 114); and the overall response rate, 70.3%. Complete and partial response rates were achieved in 26% and 45% of the patients, respectively. Treatment was well tolerated, being the most common toxicities hypertriglyceridemia (79%), hypercholesterolemia (71%), and hypothyroidism (52%). No treatment -related grade 5 adverse events were reported. Conclusions: Our study confirms bexarotene is a safe and effective therapy for the long-term treatment of CTCL. (c) 2024 AEDV.
