Measurement of the 214Bi spectrum in the energy region around the Q-value of 76Ge neutrinoless double-beta decay
In this work we present the results obtained measuring the 214Bi spectrum
from a 226Ra source with a high purity germanium detector. Our attention was
mostly focused on the energy region around the Q-value of 76Ge neutrinoless
double-beta decay (2039.006 keV). The results of this measurement are strongly
related to the first indication for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 76Ge,
given by a recent analysis \cite{Evidence,KK02-PN,KK02-Found,KK-BigArt02} of
the data collected during ten years of measurements from the HEIDELBERG-MOSCOW
experiment.Comment: 10 pages, latex2e, 5 figures, see also Home Page of HEIDELBERG

On the characterisation of a Bragg spectrometer with X-rays from an ECR source
Narrow X-ray lines from helium-like argon emitted from a dedicated ECR source
have been used to determine the response function of a Bragg crystal
spectrometer equipped with large area spherically bent silicon (111) or quartz
(10) crystals. The measured spectra are compared with simulated ones
created by a ray-tracing code based on the expected theoretical crystal's
rocking curve and the geometry of the experimental set-up.Comment: Version acceptee (NIM
Observation of beta decay of In-115 to the first excited level of Sn-115
In the context of the LENS R&D solar neutrino project, the gamma spectrum of
a sample of metallic indium was measured using a single experimental setup of 4
HP-Ge detectors located underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories
(LNGS), Italy. A gamma line at the energy (497.48 +/- 0.21) keV was found that
is not present in the background spectrum and that can be identified as a gamma
quantum following the beta decay of In-115 to the first excited state of Sn-115
(9/2+ --> 3/2+). This decay channel of In-115, which is reported here for the
first time, has an extremely low Q-value, Q = (2 +/- 4) keV, and has a much
lower probability than the well-known ground state-ground state transition,
being the branching ratio b = (1.18 +/- 0.31) 10^-6. This could be the beta
decay with the lowest known Q-value. The limit on charge non-conserving beta
decay of In-115 is set at 90% C.L. as tau > 4.1 10^20 y.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures, 2 table
Background reduction and sensitivity for germanium double beta decay experiments
Germanium detectors have very good capabilities for the investigation of rare
phenomena like the neutrinoless double beta decay. Rejection of the background
entangling the expected signal is one primary goal in this kind of experiments.
Here, the attainable background reduction in the energy region where the
neutrinoless double beta decay signal of 76Ge is expected to appear has been
evaluated for experiments using germanium detectors, taking into consideration
different strategies like the granularity of the detector system, the
segmentation of each individual germanium detector and the application of Pulse
Shape Analysis techniques to discriminate signal from background events.
Detection efficiency to the signal is affected by background rejection
techniques, and therefore it has been estimated for each of the background
rejection scenarios considered. Finally, conditions regarding crystal mass,
radiopurity, exposure to cosmic rays, shielding and rejection capabilities are
discussed with the aim to achieve a background level of 10-3 c keV-1 kg-1 y-1
in the region of interest, which would allow to explore neutrino effective
masses around 40 meV.Comment: 13 pages, 19 figures. Accepted by Astroparticle Physic
Support of Evidence for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay
Indirect support for the evidence of neutrinoless double beta decay reported
recently, is obtained by analysis of other Ge double beta experiments, which
yield independent information on the background in the region of Q_(beta-beta).
Some statistical features as well as background simulations with GEANT 4 of the
HEIDELBERG-MOSCOW experiment are discussed which disprove recent criticism.Comment: 15 pages, latex2e, 13 figure
Background Analysis around Q_(beta-beta) for 76Ge Double Beta Decay experiments, and Statistics at Low Count Rates
The background in the region of the Q-value for neutrinoless double beta
decay of 76Ge has been investigated by different methods: Simulation with GEANT
4 of the HEIDELBERG-MOSCOW experiment, analysis of other Ge double beta
experiments.Statistical features of the analysis at very low count rates are
discussed.Comment: 15 pages, latex2e, 12 figure
Data Acquisition and Analysis of the 76Ge Double Beta Experiment in Gran Sasso 1990-2003
Data acquisition in a long running underground experiment has its specific
experimental challenges, concerning data acquisition, stability of the
experiment and background reduction. These problems are addressed here for the
HEIDELBERG-MOSCOW experiment, which collected data in the period August 1990 -
May 2003. The measurement and the analysis of the data is presented. The duty
cycle of the experiment was ~80%, the collected statistics is 71.7 kgy. The
background achieved in the energy region of the Q value for double beta decay
is 0.11 events/kg y keV. The two-neutrino accompanied half-life is determined
on the basis of more than 100 000 events. The confidence level for the
neutrinoless signal has been improved to a 4 sigma level.Comment: Full version (50 pages, 36 figures, 9 tables), zipped ps file (size
