BIOMECHANICS OF ELITE JUNIOR RACE WALKERS
The elite junior race walker is less studied than the infrequently studied senior race walker. Data collection and analysis of the younger walker might be o f some value to coaches and biomechanists in studying the development o f young athletes aside from the obvious benefits to a particular competitor. What parameters of style might be exhibited by the younger walker? How do these parameters differ among the elite junior walkers? How might the studied parameters change with fatigue during competition. This exploratory study, the initial phase of ongoing research into the dynamics of the sport, focuses on stride lengths, stride frequencies, arm angles and foot strike angles
Simple, Fast and Accurate Implementation of the Diffusion Approximation Algorithm for Stochastic Ion Channels with Multiple States
The phenomena that emerge from the interaction of the stochastic opening and
closing of ion channels (channel noise) with the non-linear neural dynamics are
essential to our understanding of the operation of the nervous system. The
effects that channel noise can have on neural dynamics are generally studied
using numerical simulations of stochastic models. Algorithms based on discrete
Markov Chains (MC) seem to be the most reliable and trustworthy, but even
optimized algorithms come with a non-negligible computational cost. Diffusion
Approximation (DA) methods use Stochastic Differential Equations (SDE) to
approximate the behavior of a number of MCs, considerably speeding up
simulation times. However, model comparisons have suggested that DA methods did
not lead to the same results as in MC modeling in terms of channel noise
statistics and effects on excitability. Recently, it was shown that the
difference arose because MCs were modeled with coupled activation subunits,
while the DA was modeled using uncoupled activation subunits. Implementations
of DA with coupled subunits, in the context of a specific kinetic scheme,
yielded similar results to MC. However, it remained unclear how to generalize
these implementations to different kinetic schemes, or whether they were faster
than MC algorithms. Additionally, a steady state approximation was used for the
stochastic terms, which, as we show here, can introduce significant
inaccuracies. We derived the SDE explicitly for any given ion channel kinetic
scheme. The resulting generic equations were surprisingly simple and
interpretable - allowing an easy and efficient DA implementation. The algorithm
was tested in a voltage clamp simulation and in two different current clamp
simulations, yielding the same results as MC modeling. Also, the simulation
efficiency of this DA method demonstrated considerable superiority over MC
methods.Comment: 32 text pages, 10 figures, 1 supplementary text + figur
Science from an Ultra-Deep, High-Resolution Millimeter-Wave Survey
Opening up a new window of millimeter-wave observations that span frequency
bands in the range of 30 to 500 GHz, survey half the sky, and are both an order
of magnitude deeper (about 0.5 uK-arcmin) and of higher-resolution (about 10
arcseconds) than currently funded surveys would yield an enormous gain in
understanding of both fundamental physics and astrophysics. In particular, such
a survey would allow for major advances in measuring the distribution of dark
matter and gas on small-scales, and yield needed insight on 1.) dark matter
particle properties, 2.) the evolution of gas and galaxies, 3.) new light
particle species, 4.) the epoch of inflation, and 5.) the census of bodies
orbiting in the outer Solar System.Comment: 5 pages + references; Submitted to the Astro2020 call for science

Police districting problem: literature review and annotated bibliography
The police districting problem concerns the efficient and effective design of patrol sectors in terms of performance attributes. Effectiveness is particularly important as it directly influences the ability of police agencies to stop and prevent crime. However, in this problem, a homogeneous distribution of workload is also desirable to guarantee fairness to the police agents and an increase in their satisfaction. This chapter provides a systematic review of the literature related to the police districting problem, whose history dates back to almost 50 years ago. Contributions are categorized in terms of attributes and solution methodology adopted. Also, an annotated bibliography that presents the most relevant elements of each research is given
Economic Analysis of Knowledge: The History of Thought and the Central Themes
Following the development of knowledge economies, there has been a rapid expansion of economic analysis of knowledge, both in the context of technological knowledge in particular and the decision theory in general. This paper surveys this literature by identifying the main themes and contributions and outlines the future prospects of the discipline. The wide scope of knowledge related questions in terms of applicability and alternative approaches has led to the fragmentation of research. Nevertheless, one can identify a continuing tradition which analyses various aspects of the generation, dissemination and use of knowledge in the economy
Antiplatelet therapy with aspirin, clopidogrel, and dipyridamole versus clopidogrel alone or aspirin and dipyridamole in patients with acute cerebral ischaemia (TARDIS): a randomised, open-label, phase 3 superiority trial
Background: Intensive antiplatelet therapy with three agents might be more effective than guideline treatment for preventing recurrent events in patients with acute cerebral ischaemia. We aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of intensive antiplatelet therapy (combined aspirin, clopidogrel, and dipyridamole) with that of guideline-based antiplatelet therapy.
Methods: We did an international, prospective, randomised, open-label, blinded-endpoint trial in adult participants with ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA) within 48 h of onset. Participants were assigned in a 1:1 ratio using computer randomisation to receive loading doses and then 30 days of intensive antiplatelet therapy (combined aspirin 75 mg, clopidogrel 75 mg, and dipyridamole 200 mg twice daily) or guideline-based therapy (comprising either clopidogrel alone or combined aspirin and dipyridamole). Randomisation was stratified by country and index event, and minimised with prognostic baseline factors, medication use, time to randomisation, stroke-related factors, and thrombolysis. The ordinal primary outcome was the combined incidence and severity of any recurrent stroke (ischaemic or haemorrhagic; assessed using the modified Rankin Scale) or TIA within 90 days, as assessed by central telephone follow-up with masking to treatment assignment, and analysed by intention to treat. This trial is registered with the ISRCTN registry, number ISRCTN47823388.
Findings: 3096 participants (1556 in the intensive antiplatelet therapy group, 1540 in the guideline antiplatelet therapy group) were recruited from 106 hospitals in four countries between April 7, 2009, and March 18, 2016. The trial was stopped early on the recommendation of the data monitoring committee. The incidence and severity of recurrent stroke or TIA did not differ between intensive and guideline therapy (93 [6%] participants vs 105 [7%]; adjusted common odds ratio [cOR] 0·90, 95% CI 0·67–1·20, p=0·47). By contrast, intensive antiplatelet therapy was associated with more, and more severe, bleeding (adjusted cOR 2·54, 95% CI 2·05–3·16, p<0·0001).
Interpretation: Among patients with recent cerebral ischaemia, intensive antiplatelet therapy did not reduce the incidence and severity of recurrent stroke or TIA, but did significantly increase the risk of major bleeding. Triple antiplatelet therapy should not be used in routine clinical practice
International genome-wide meta-analysis identifies new primary biliary cirrhosis risk loci and targetable pathogenic pathways.
Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a classical autoimmune liver disease for which effective immunomodulatory therapy is lacking. Here we perform meta-analyses of discovery data sets from genome-wide association studies of European subjects (n=2,764 cases and 10,475 controls) followed by validation genotyping in an independent cohort (n=3,716 cases and 4,261 controls). We discover and validate six previously unknown risk loci for PBC (Pcombined<5 × 10(-8)) and used pathway analysis to identify JAK-STAT/IL12/IL27 signalling and cytokine-cytokine pathways, for which relevant therapies exist
