Characterization of PARIS LaBr(Ce)-NaI(Tl) phoswich detectors upto 22 MeV
In order to understand the performance of the PARIS (Photon Array for the
studies with Radioactive Ion and Stable beams) detector, detailed
characterization of two individual phoswich (LaBr(Ce)-NaI(Tl)) elements has
been carried out. The detector response is investigated over a wide range of
= 0.6 to 22.6 MeV using radioactive sources and employing
reaction at = 163 keV and = 7.2 MeV. The
linearity of energy response of the LaBr(Ce) detector is tested upto 22.6
MeV using three different voltage dividers. The data acquisition system using
CAEN digitizers is set up and optimized to get the best energy and time
resolution. The energy resolution of 2.1% at = 22.6~MeV is
measured for the configuration giving best linearity upto high energy. Time
resolution of the phoswich detector is measured with a Co source after
implementing CFD algorithm for the digitized pulses and is found to be
excellent (FWHM 315~ps). In order to study the effect of count rate on
detectors, the centroid position and width of the = 835~keV peak
were measured upto 220 kHz count rate. The measured efficiency data with
radioactive sources are in good agreement with GEANT4 based simulations. The
total energy spectrum after the add-back of energy signals in phoswich
components is also presented.Comment: Accepted in JINS
8Be cluster emission versus alpha evaporation in 28Si + 12C
The possible occurence of highly deformed configurations in the Ca
di-nuclear system formed in the Si + C reaction is investigated
by analyzing the spectra of emitted light charged particles. Both inclusive and
exclusive measurements of the heavy fragments (A 10) and their
associated light charged particles (protons and particles) have been
made at the IReS Strasbourg {\sc VIVITRON} Tandem facility at bombarding
energies of (Si) = 112 MeV and 180 MeV by using the {\sc
ICARE} charged particle multidetector array. The energy spectra, velocity
distributions, in-plane and out-of-plane angular correlations of light charged
particles are compared to statistical-model calculations using a consistent set
of parameters with spin-dependent level densities. This spin dependence
approach suggests the onset of large nuclear deformation in Ca at high
spin. This conclusion might be connected with the recent observation of
superdeformed bands in the Ca nucleus. The analysis of
particles in coincidence with S fragments suggests a surprisingly strong
Be cluster emission of a binary nature.Comment: 39 pages 15 figure
Search for emission of unstable Be clusters from hot Ca and Ni nuclei
The possible occurence of highly deformed configurations is investigated in
the Ca and Ni di-nuclear systems as formed in the Si +
C and Si + Si reactions, respectively, by using the
properties of emitted light charged particles. Inclusive as well as exclusive
data of the heavy fragments (A 6) and their associated light charged
particles (p, d, t, and -particles) have been collected at the IReS
Strasbourg VIVITRON Tandem facility with two bombarding energies
Si) = 112 and 180 MeV by using the ICARE charged particle
multidetector array, which consists of nearly 40 telescopes. The measured
energy spectra, velocity distributions, in-plane and out-of-plane angular
correlations are analysed by Monte Carlo CASCADE statistical-model calculations
using a consistent set of parameters with spin-dependent level densities.
Although significant deformation effects at high spin are needed, the remaining
disagreement observed in the Si + C reaction for the S
evaporation residue suggests an unexpected large unstable Be cluster
emission of a binary nature.Comment: 13 pages latex, 9 eps figures. Paper presented at the XXXIX

Large Deformation Effects in the N = Z 44Ti Compound Nucleus
The N = Z 44Ti* nucleus has been populated in Fusion Evaporation process at
very high excitation energies and angular momenta using two entrance channels
with different mass-asymmetry. The deformation effects in the rapidly rotating
nuclei have been investigated through the energy distribution of the
alpha-particle combined to statistical-model calculations. In the case of
low-multiplicity events, the ratio between first particle emitted has been
measured and shows significant disagreement with the predictions of the
statistical-model. This may explain The large discrepancies observed in proton
energy spectra measured in previous experiments performed in the same mass
region.Comment: Proceeding of the 10th International Conference on Nuclear Reaction

Analysis of charged particle emission sources and coalescence in E/A = 61 MeV Ar + Al, Sn and Sn collisions
Single-particle kinetic energy spectra and two-particle small angle
correlations of protons (), deuterons () and tritons () have been
measured simultaneously in 61A MeV Ar + Al, Sn and
Sn collisions. Characteristics of the emission sources have been
derived from a ``source identification plot'' (--
plot), constructed from the single-particle invariant spectra, and compared to
the complementary results from two-particle correlation functions. Furthermore,
the source identification plot has been used to determine the conditions when
the coalescence mechanism can be applied for composite particles. In our data,
this is the case only for the Ar + Al reaction, where , and are
found to originate from a common source of emission (from the overlap region
between target and projectile). In this case, the coalescence model parameter,
-- the radius of the complex particle emission source in momentum
space, has been analyzed.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Nuclear Physics
Clusters in Light Nuclei
A great deal of research work has been undertaken in the alpha-clustering
study since the pioneering discovery, half a century ago, of 12C+12C molecular
resonances. Our knowledge of the field of the physics of nuclear molecules has
increased considerably and nuclear clustering remains one of the most fruitful
domains of nuclear physics, facing some of the greatest challenges and
opportunities in the years ahead. In this work, the occurence of "exotic"
shapes in light N=Z alpha-like nuclei is investigated. Various approaches of
superdeformed and hyperdeformed bands associated with quasimolecular resonant
structures are presented. Results on clustering aspects are also discussed for
light neutron-rich Oxygen isotopes.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures. Invited Talk presented by C. Beck at the

Helium Clustering in Neutron-Rich Be Isotopes
Measurements of the helium-cluster breakup and neutron removal cross sections
for neutron-rich Be isotopes A=10-12,14 are presented. These have been studied
in the 30 to 42 MeV/u energy range where reaction measurements are proposed to
be sensitive to the cluster content of the ground-state wave-function. These
measurements provide a comprehensive survey of the decay processes of the Be
isotopes by which the valence neutrons are removed revealing the underlying
alpha-alpha core-cluster structure. The measurements indicate that clustering
in the Be isotopes remains important up to the drip-line nucleus 14^Be and that
the dominant helium-cluster structure in the neutron-rich Be isotopes
corresponds to alpha-Xn-alpha.Comment: 5 pages, 2 tables and 3 figure

The detection of neutron clusters
A new approach to the production and detection of bound neutron clusters is
presented. The technique is based on the breakup of beams of very neutron-rich
nuclei and the subsequent detection of the recoiling proton in a liquid
scintillator. The method has been tested in the breakup of 11Li, 14Be and 15B
beams by a C target. Some 6 events were observed that exhibit the
characteristics of a multineutron cluster liberated in the breakup of 14Be,
most probably in the channel 10Be+4n. The various backgrounds that may mimic
such a signal are discussed in detail.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, LPCC 01-1
