    Some comparison theorems for weak nonnegative splittings of bounded operators

    AbstractThe comparison of the asymptotic rates of convergence of two iteration matrices induced by two splittings of the same matrix has arisen in the works of many authors. In this paper we derive new comparison theorems for weak nonnegative splittings and weak splittings of bounded operators in a general Banach space and rather general cones, and in a Hilbert space, which extend some of the results obtained by WoĆșnicki (Japan J. Indust. Appl. Math. 11(1994) 289–342) and Marek and Szyld (Numer. Math. 44(1984) 23–35). Furthermore, we present new theorems also for bounded operator which extend some results by Csordas and Varga (Numer. Math. 44. (1984) 23–35) for weak nonnegative splittings of matrices

    Usefulness of 18f-FDG PET-CT in Staging, Restaging, and Response Assessment in Pediatric Rhabdomyosarcoma

    Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common soft-tissue sarcoma of childhood. Despite clinical advances, subsets of these patients continue to suffer high morbidity and mortality rates associated with their disease. Following the European guidelines for 18F-FDG PET and PET-CT imaging in pediatric oncology, the routine use of 18F-FDG PET-CT may be useful for patients affected by rhabdomyosarcoma, in staging, in the evaluation of response to therapy, and for restaging/detection of relapse. The European Pediatric Protocols are very old, and for staging and restaging, they recommend only radionuclide bone scan. The 18F-FDG PET-CT exam is listed as an optional investigation prescribed according to local availability and local protocols in the investigations panel required at the end of the treatment. We present two cases highlighting the usefulness of 18F-FDG PET-CT in managing pediatric patients affected by rhabdomyosarcoma, providing some bibliographic references

    Diatom and silicoflagellate fluxes at the Walvis Ridge: An environment influenced by coastal upwelling in the Benguela system

    Seasonal fluctuations in the total particle, biogenic opal, diatom and silicoflagellate fluxes were observed in sediment traps deployed at 599 m and 1648 m in the Walvis Ridge area, within the Benguela upwelling system, from March 1989 to March 1990 (station WR 2: 20°02.8â€ČS, 09°09.3â€ČE). Fluxes were directly related to wind stress variations (wind maxima preceding flux maxima by several weeks), and inversely related to SST changes (derived from measured concentrations of C37 alkenones; range: 14.6°–23.6°C). The biogenic particle composition at different depths reflected the complicated hydrology of the area with a combination of tropical, temperate and subantarctic water masses. Biogenic opal content varied from about 2 to 12% of the total mass flux in the upper trap and from about 4 to 17% in the lower trap. Diatoms were the main contributor to the opal fraction (mean daily flux of ca. 5.5 * 106 valves m−2 day−1), followed by silicoflagellates (ca. 2.6 * 105 skeletons m−2 day−1). Two seasonal maxima, in May and June (austral autumn) and from October to November (austral spring), were observed; silicoflagellates yielded also a third moderate maximum in August/September (austral winter). At 1648 m fluxes peaked from May to July (data were available for the period 18 Mar to 27 Aug 1989 only). Few diatoms were abundant; 19 taxa accounted for 50% of all the diatoms identified, and about 32 for the 75% level. Specific diversity of diatoms at 599 m was highest during times of lowest fluxes, in the austral winter, late spring and summer. The diatom taxa occurring at 599 m and at 1648 m were the same, with some flux enrichment with depth due to advection of particles into the lower trap by resuspension and downslope movement. The relatively high concentrations of the Antarctic-Subantarctic species Fragilariopsis kerguelensis in the upper trap solely, was probably linked to selective entrainment and transport within a ring of southerly origin (south of the Subantarctic/Subtropical Convergence Zone). The enrichment of moderately resistant and robust taxa in the sediments in conjunction with the rarity or absence of delicate taxa points to preferential concentration in the sediments of some taxa and dissolution of others. The occurrence of phytoliths in the traps and in the sediment sample can be linked to the “berg” winds, which are typical for the entire Benguela region during fall and winter

    Long-Term Changes of Particle Flux in the Canary Basin Between 1991 and 2009 and Comparison to Sediment Trap Records Off Mauritania

    Eastern Boundary Upwelling Ecosystems (EBUEs) are associated with high biological productivity, high fish catch and they highly contribute to marine carbon sequestration. Whether coastal upwelling has intensified or weakened under climate change in the past decades is controversially discussed and different approaches (e.g., time-series of chlorophyll, wind, sea surface temperature, modeling experiments) have been considered. We present a record of almost two decades of particle fluxes (1991–2009) from ca. 600 to 3100 m water depth in the Canary Basin at site ESTOC (European Station for Time series in the Ocean Canary Islands; ca. 29°N, 15°30.W, ca. 3600 m water depth), located in the offshore transition zone of the northern Canary Current-EBUE. We compare these flux records with those measured at a mesotrophic sediment trap site further south off Cape Blanc (Mauritania, ca. 21°N). The deep ocean fluxes at ESTOC in ca. 3 km recorded the evolution of the coastal Cape Ghir filament (30–32°N, 10–12°W) due to lateral advection of particles, whereas the upper water column sediment traps in ca. 1 km reflected the oligotrophic conditions in the overlying waters of ESTOC. We observed an increased emphasis in spring-time fluxes since 2005, associated with a change in particle composition, while satellite chlorophyll biomass did not show this pattern. Due to its northern location in the CC-EBUEs, spring biogenic fluxes at ESTOC provide a better relationship to the forcing of the North Atlantic Oscillation than those recorded further south off Cape Blanc. Off Cape Blanc, deep fluxes showed the best overlap with the deep ESTOC fluxes during the spring season before 2005. On the long-term, both chlorophyll and particle fluxes showed an increasing trend at ESTOC which was not observed further south at the mesotrophic Cape Blanc site. This might indicate that, depending on their location along the NW African margin, coastal upwelling systems react differently to global change

    The effects of temperature, salinity, and the carbonate system on Mg/Ca in Globigerinoides ruber (white) : a global sediment trap calibration

Lea.The Mg/Ca of planktic foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber (white) is a widely applied proxy for tropical and sub-tropical sea-surface temperature. The accuracy with which temperature can be reconstructed depends on how accurately relationships between Mg/Ca and temperature and the multiple secondary controls on Mg/Ca are known; however, these relationships remain poorly quantified under oceanic conditions. Here, we present new calibrations based on 440 sediment trap/plankton tow samples from the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, including 130 new samples from the Bay of Bengal/Arabian Sea and the tropical Atlantic Ocean. Our results indicate temperature, salinity and the carbonate system all significantly influence Mg/Ca in G. ruber (white). We propose two calibration models: The first model assumes pH is the controlling carbonate system parameter. In this model, Mg/Ca has a temperature sensitivity of 6.0±0.8%/°C (2σ), a salinity sensitivity of 3.3±2.2%/PSU and a pH sensitivity of −8.3±7.7%/0.1 pH units; The second model assumes carbonate ion concentration ([CO32−]) is the controlling carbonate system parameter. In this model, Mg/Ca has a temperature sensitivity of 6.7±0.8%/°C, a salinity sensitivity of 5.0±3.0%/PSU and a [CO32−] sensitivity of −0.24±0.11%/ÎŒmol kg−1. In both models, the temperature sensitivity is significantly lower than the widely-applied sensitivity of 9.0±0.6%/°C. Application of our new calibrations to down-core data from the Last Glacial Maximum, considering whole ocean changes in salinity and carbonate chemistry, indicate a cooling of 2.4±1.6°C in the tropical oceans if pH is the controlling parameter and 1.5±1.4°C if [CO32−] is the controlling parameter.PostprintPeer reviewe

    The impact of decision aids to enhance shared decision making for diabetes (the DAD study): protocol of a cluster randomized trial

    Background. Shared decision making contributes to high quality healthcare by promoting a patientcentered approach. Patient involvement in selecting the components of a diabetes medication program that best match the patient's values and preferences may also enhance medication adherence and improve outcomes. Decision aids are tools designed to involve patients in shared decision making, but their adoption in practice has been limited. In this study, we propose to obtain a preliminary estimate of the impact of patient decision aids vs. usual care on measures of patient involvement in decision making, diabetes care processes, medication adherence, glycemic and cardiovascular risk factor control, and resource utilization. In addition, we propose to identify, describe, and explain factors that promote or inhibit the routine embedding of decision aids in practice. Methods. We will be conducting a mixed-methods study comprised of a cluster-randomized, practical, multicentered trial enrolling clinicians and their patients (n = 240) with type 2 diabetes from rural and suburban primary care practices (n = 8), with an embedded qualitative study to examine factors that influence the incorporation of decision aids into routine practice. The intervention will consist of the use of a decision aid (Statin Choice and Aspirin Choice, or Diabetes Medication Choice) during the clinical encounter. The qualitative study will include analysis of video recordings of clinical encounters and in-depth, semi-structured interviews with participating patients, clinicians, and clinic support staff, in both trial arms. Discussion. Upon completion of this trial, we will have new knowledge about the effectiveness of diabetes decision aids in these practices. We will also better understand the factors that promote or inhibit the successful implementation and normalization of medication choice decision aids in the care of chronic patients in primary care practices

    Making Waves:Collaboration in the time of SARS-CoV-2 - rapid development of an international co-operation and wastewater surveillance database to support public health decision-making

    The presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater was first reported in March 2020. Over the subsequent months, the potential for wastewater surveillance to contribute to COVID-19 mitigation programmes has been the focus of intense national and international research activities, gaining the attention of policy makers and the public. As a new application of an established methodology, focused collaboration between public health practitioners and wastewater researchers is essential to developing a common understanding on how, when and where the outputs of this non-invasive community-level approach can deliver actionable outcomes for public health authorities. Within this context, the NORMAN SCORE “SARS-CoV-2 in sewage” database provides a platform for rapid, open access data sharing, validated by the uploading of 276 data sets from nine countries to-date. Through offering direct access to underpinning meta-data sets (and describing its use in data interpretation), the NORMAN SCORE database is a resource for the development of recommendations on minimum data requirements for wastewater pathogen surveillance. It is also a tool to engage public health practitioners in discussions on use of the approach, providing an opportunity to build mutual understanding of the demand and supply for data and facilitate the translation of this promising research application into public health practice.</p
