Agogo Presbyterian College of Education Under the Missionaries and After Take-Over by the Government (1931-2013): A Comparative Study

    Get PDF
The study analyzed the Agogo Presbyterian College of Education (1930-1971) and when it was taken over by the Government (1972-2013). This became relevant in the wake of the recent plea by the churches that the Government should hand over Mission Schools to the churches. The study therefore examines the state of management and leadership and infrastructural development both under the regime of the Missionaries and the Government. It also sought to assess academic standard of the students, and the discipline of the College, qualification of the teachers, supervision, and students’ patronage of library and entry grade of students to the College with the view of establishing the progression or retrogression over the period. In doing this, a comparative study was undertaken and data were derived from archival materials of the Agogo Presbyterian College of Education, and direct interviews with past Principals and Administrators of the College. The results revealed that despite an increase in student-intake (210 students in 1942 to 750 students in 2014) with a corresponding increase of teachers (from 5 missionary teachers with lower academic degrees in 1931 to 28 teachers with masters qualifications), inadequate infrastructural development; lack of discipline and competitions among students have characterized APCE since it was managed by the Government as compared to the Missionaries. The study recommends that the Government would complete the construction of the students‟ hall complex, and also put up large auditorium and classroom blocks to accommodate the high students’ intake in the College to enhance education delivery

Magnetospheric signatures of ionospheric density cavities observed by cluster

AJBR ackowledges support from STFC under consolidated grant ST/K000993/1.We present Cluster measurements of large amplitude electric fields corre- lated with intense downward field-aligned currents, observed during a nightside crossing of the auroral zone. The data are reproduced by a simple model of magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling which, under different conditions, can also produce a divergent electric field signature in the downward current region, or correlation between the electric and perturbed magnetic fields. We conclude that strong electric field associated with intense downward field-aligned current, such as this observation, is a signature of ionospheric plasma depletion caused by the downward current. It is also shown that the electric field in the downward current region correlates with downward current density if a background field is present, e.g. due to magnetospheric convection.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

The Difficulty with Deafness Discourse and Disability Culture

This paper addresses why the Deaf Culture stance is to distance itself from disability and how this divides rather than unifies communities in common. From the perspective of a member of both the Deaf World and Disability Culture, current discourses are considered and presented for discussion

Misyar Marriage as Human Trafficking in Saudi Arabia

    Get PDF
The severity and scope of human trafficking for sexual and labor exploitation has been grossly understudied until this past decade. Reliable information on how and why trafficking in persons occurs is scarce, especially for the Middle East. Saudi Arabia’s notorious policies of discrimination against women serve as the starting point. In Saudi Arabia, the monarchy has co-opted the traditional roles of women as an emblem of its own Islamic character, thereby making it a symbol of its national heritage. An entrenched institution of patriarchy uses gender construction as an instrument of state policy and state security. This intimate relationship between gender roles and national identity demonstrates that the exploitation of women through misyar marriage stems primarily from the cultural and political emphasis on preserving a unified Islamic nation. The purpose of this analysis is to investigate the practice of misyar or temporary marriages by wealthy Gulf men as a form of human trafficking

    Work Readiness among Graduate Students

This study explored work readiness among graduate program completers at a Research University (RU/VH) in the Southeastern Region of the United States. Work readiness, although a relatively new construct, is defined as the level to which graduate students are perceived as possessing attitudes and attributes that enable them to be prepared for success in the workforce. Graduate degree-seeking students in universities and colleges are projected to surpass bachelor seeking students in the future. Hiring of graduate degree holders by organizations, however, play a major role in recruitment of new employees. Increasingly, organizations report that recent graduate program completers are insufficiently prepared for the 21st century workplace. University administrators however allude to the contrary. Graduate program completers going through this transition from classroom to the workplace have been scarcely studied in terms of their perceived work readiness. This study therefore studied their perceived work readiness as well as influencing personal and academic characteristics. Data from 967 graduate program completers were used in the study. This data were collected from the Graduating Student Survey of a Research University (RU/VH) in the Southeastern Region of the United States. The data measured perceived work readiness of graduate program completers for each graduating semester in 2014. The selected predictors in this study included Having an Internship, Having an Assistantship, Publication Status and Participation in Conferences, Access to faculty expertise, Access to facilities, Satisfaction with career center. The predictor variables were explored to determine their significance in predicting work readiness perceptions of the graduate program completers. The results showed that graduate program completers who had an internship and an assistantship were significantly different from those who did not in terms of their perceived work readiness. In addition having access to faculty expertise, satisfaction with career center and submitting one or more journal articles for publication explained 21.6% of the variance in perceived work readiness of the graduate program completers. Other findings with discussion of the results and recommendations for future research and practice were discussed

Intergenerational Congruence in Chinese American Young Adults

Chinese American families are often underrepresented within the family therapy literature. This grounded theory study used a symbolic interaction framework to understand how second generation young adults locate themselves within the larger cultural context to construct an individual ideology. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with Chinese American young adults between the ages of 18-24. Family and cultural experiences influences how young adults develop and transition from childhood to adolescence to young adulthood. This study suggests the importance for family therapists to identify Chinese American young adults’ experiences and their development to understand how multiple factors impact their construction of “I”
