    Wastes after distillation of Helichrysum italicum - biological active compounds and free radical scavenging activity

    Distillation wastewater, by-products from steam and water distillation as well as raw material used as control of fl ower heads of Helichrysum italicum were comparative analyzed for content of the biologically active compounds by GC/MS. Acetone exudates, methanol extracts and ethyl acetate fractions obtained after alkaline hydrolyze of the studied materials were received. The three types of extraction products as well as the distillation wastewater were examined for free radical scavenging activity by DPPH assay. Phenol, fatty- and organic acids, sterols, triterpenes, sugars and sugar alcohols were identifi ed. Succinic acid and myo-inositol were identifi ed as main components of distillation wastewater. Hydroxycinnamic acid, caff eic acid and 4(p)-hydroxybenzoic acid were dominant compounds of the ethyl acetate fractions. Triterpenes and fatty acids, sterols and fl avonoids are among the main biologically active substances in the methanolic extracts and acetone exudates. The ethyl acetate fractions were found to possess the highest free radical scavenging activity (IC50 < 50 µg/mL). Signifi cant diff erences in the activity between wastes and raw materials were not found. The results showed that the waste products after distillation of H. italicum contain important biologically active substances and the extracts with high antioxidant activity can be obtained from them

    The authors presented a documented case of spontaneous heterotopic pregnancy (uterine in combination with ruptured left tubal pregnancy). A laparoscopic tubectomy was performed. The uterine pregnancy progressed and finalized in time with the birth of a healthy child through the natural genital tract.     Exploring Changes in Diagnoses during the COVID-19 Era: Comparative Analysis

    The healthcare sector is just one of several areas of society that have been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper aims to analyze the changes observed in the medical profession’s approach to diagnosing diseases between the pre-pandemic year of 2019 and the pandemic year of 2020. By examining these shifts, we explore how medical professionals have adapted their treatment strategies, leading to modifications in diagnosis for various diseases. Based on our visualization, shown in Figure 1, we observed that the diagnoses of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and End stage renal disease had consistent distributions in both 2019 and 2020. Also we need to mention, the count value for Obstructive Sleep Apnea was higher in 2020, whereas in 2019, the count value was higher for End stage renal disease, showing their representation in each year. We can conclude that the pandemic has resulted in a marked increase in the occurrence of specific diagnoses compared to the previous year, some of them being acute pharyngitis-sore throat (J029), gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (K219) and pure hypercholesterolemia - unspecified (E7800), as can be seen on Figure 1. A notable variation can be observed when examining the months of November and December in 2020. In these months, the diagnosis Contact with and (suspected) exposure to other viral communicable diseases transitions from the third to the second position, indicating a higher occurrence of COVID-19 in December compared to November. This shift in ranking provides valuable insights into the increased prevalence of this diagnosis during the month of December. Through this analysis, we aim to examine the transformations that have taken place as a result of the pandemic, particularly in terms of the diagnosis of a specific disease, which has undergone notable changes compared to the pre-pandemic period.     Risk Measurement of Perinatal and Neonatal Morbidity Characteristics and Applicability of GAIA Case Definitions: Results and Lessons Learnt of a Hospital-Based Prospective Cohort Study in the Valencia Region (2019–2020)

    Post-marketing safety surveillance of new vaccines aimed to be administered during pregnancy is crucial to orchestrate efficient adverse events evaluation. This is of special relevance in the current landscape of new vaccines being introduced in the pregnant women population, and particularly due to the recent administration of COVID-19 vaccines in pregnant women. This multicenter prospective cohort study, nested within the WHO-Global Vaccine Safety-MCC study, involved two hospitals in the Valencia region. Hereby, the incidence rates of seven perinatal and neonatal outcomes in the Valencia region are presented. The pooled data analysis of the two Valencian hospitals allowed the estimation of incidence rates in the Valencia Region (per 1000 live births): 86.7 for low birth weight, 78.2 for preterm birth, 58.8 for small for gestational age, 13 for congenital microcephaly, 0.4 for stillbirth, 1.2 for neonatal death and 6.5 for neonatal infection. These figures are in line with what is expected from a high-income country and the previously reported rates for Spain and Europe, except for the significantly increased rate for congenital microcephaly. Regarding the data for maternal immunization, the vaccination status was collected for 94.4% of the screened pregnant women, highlighting the high quality of the Valencian Vaccine Registry. The study also assessed the Valencian hospitals’ capacity for identifying and collecting data on maternal immunization status, as well as the applicability of the GAIA definitions to the identified outcomes.Medicin

    Attributable deaths and disability-adjusted life-years caused by infections with antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the EU and the European Economic Area in 2015: a population-level modelling analysis

    Background: Infections due to antibiotic-resistant bacteria are threatening modern health care. However, estimating their incidence, complications, and attributable mortality is challenging. We aimed to estimate the burden of infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria of public health concern in countries of the EU and European Economic Area (EEA) in 2015, measured in number of cases, attributable deaths, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs). Methods: We estimated the incidence of infections with 16 antibiotic resistance–bacterium combinations from European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Network (EARS-Net) 2015 data that was country-corrected for population coverage. We multiplied the number of bloodstream infections (BSIs) by a conversion factor derived from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control point prevalence survey of health-care-associated infections in European acute care hospitals in 2011–12 to estimate the number of non-BSIs. We developed disease outcome models for five types of infection on the basis of systematic reviews of the literature. Findings: From EARS-Net data collected between Jan 1, 2015, and Dec 31, 2015, we estimated 671 689 (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 583 148–763 966) infections with antibiotic-resistant bacteria, of which 63·5% (426 277 of 671 689) were associated with health care. These infections accounted for an estimated 33 110 (28 480–38 430) attributable deaths and 874 541 (768 837–989 068) DALYs. The burden for the EU and EEA was highest in infants (aged <1 year) and people aged 65 years or older, had increased since 2007, and was highest in Italy and Greece. Interpretation: Our results present the health burden of five types of infection with antibiotic-resistant bacteria expressed, for the first time, in DALYs. The estimated burden of infections with antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the EU and EEA is substantial compared with that of other infectious diseases, and has increased since 2007. Our burden estimates provide useful information for public health decision-makers prioritising interventions for infectious diseases

    WHO global research priorities for antimicrobial resistance in human health

    The WHO research agenda for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in human health has identified 40 research priorities to be addressed by the year 2030. These priorities focus on bacterial and fungal pathogens of crucial importance in addressing AMR, including drug-resistant pathogens causing tuberculosis. These research priorities encompass the entire people-centred journey, covering prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of antimicrobial-resistant infections, in addition to addressing the overarching knowledge gaps in AMR epidemiology, burden and drivers, policies and regulations, and awareness and education. The research priorities were identified through a multistage process, starting with a comprehensive scoping review of knowledge gaps, with expert inputs gathered through a survey and open call. The priority setting involved a rigorous modified Child Health and Nutrition Research Initiative approach, ensuring global representation and applicability of the findings. The ultimate goal of this research agenda is to encourage research and investment in the generation of evidence to better understand AMR dynamics and facilitate policy translation for reducing the burden and consequences of AMR

    Comparative Chemical Profiling and Citronellol Enantiomers Distribution of Industrial-Type Rose Oils Produced in China

    The chemical composition and aroma profile of industrial essential oils (EOs) from species of rose grown in China, including the native Kushui rose (R. sertata &times; R. rugosa) and R. rugosa Thunb. cv. Plena, and the recently introduced Damask rose (R. damascena Mill.), were studied in comparison by means of GC/MS and GC-FID. More than 150 individual compounds were detected in Chinese rose samples, of which 112 were identified and their quantitative content determined, representing 88.7%, 96.7% and 97.9% of the total EO content, respectively. It was found that the main constituents of the Chinese rose EOs were representatives of terpenoid compounds (mono- and sesquiterpenoids, predominantly) and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Comparative chemical profiling revealed different chemical composition and aroma profiles: while the R. damascena oil showed a balance between the eleoptene and stearoptene fractions of the oil (the average ratio between the main terpene alcohols and paraffins was 2.65), in the Kushui and R. rugosa oils, the odorous liquid phase strongly dominated over the stearopten, with a ratio of 16.91 and 41.43, respectively. The most abundant terpene was citronellol, ranging from 36.69% in R. damascena to 48.32% in R. rugosa oil. In addition, the citronellol enantiomers distribution, which is an important marker for rose oil authenticity, was studied for the first time in R. rugosa oil

    Subcritical Extracts from Major Species of Oil-Bearing Roses—A Comparative Chemical Profiling

    A comprehensive chemical profiling of 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (freon R134a) subcritical extracts from the main genotypes of oil-bearing roses, was performed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID) in order to reveal the differences in their chemical composition. One hundred and three individual compounds were identified using GC/MS and their quantitative content was determined using GC-FID, representing 89.8, 92.5, 89.7 and 93.7% of the total content of Rosa gallica L., Rosa damascena Mill., Rosa alba L. and Rosa centifolia L. extracts, respectively. The compounds found in the extracts are representatives of the following main chemical classes: mono-, sesqui- and triterpenoids, phenylethanoids and phenylpropanoids and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Fatty acids, esters and waxes were found, as well. The study revealed that 2-phenylethanol is the most abundant component, ranging 9.0–60.9% followed by nonadecane and nonadecene with 5.1–18.0% geraniol (2.9–14.4%), heneicosane (3.1–11.8%), tricosane (0.1–8.6%), nerol (1.3–6.1%) and citronellol (1.7–5.3%). The extracts demonstrate a specific chemical profile, depending on the botanical species—phenylethanoids and phenyl propanoids are the main group for R. damascena, aliphatic hydrocarbons for R. alba and R. centifolia, while both are found in almost equal amounts in R. gallica. The terpenoid compounds show relatively broad variations: monoterpenes—11.9–25.5% with maximum in R. centifolia; sesquiterpenes—0.6–7.0% with maximum in R. gallica and triterpenes—0.4–3.7% with maximum in R. gallica extract

    Genotoxic and Anti-Genotoxic Potential of Hydrosols from Water–Steam Distillation of Oil-Bearing Roses <i>Rosa centifolia</i> L. and <i>Rosa gallica</i> L. from Bulgaria

    Rosa centifolia L. and Rosa gallica L. (Rosaceae) are grown as raw materials for valuable essential oils and hydrosols. There are scarce data about the biological activities and the genoprotective potential of the hydrosols of these roses. The aim of the study was to provide information on their cytotoxic/genotoxic activity and anti-cytotoxic/anti-genotoxic capacity against mutagenic N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG). The evaluation was performed using classical tests for chromosomal aberrations and micronuclei in the higher plant Hordeum vulgare and human lymphocyte test systems. The experimental schemes included combined hydrosol and mutagen treatment. Both hydrosols (6, 14, 20%) had no cytotoxic effect on barley and showed low genotoxicity in both test systems as the injuries were enhanced to a lesser extent compared to the controls. Lymphocytes were more susceptible than H. vulgare. Under the conditions of combined treatment, it was found that the two hydrosols possessed good anti-cytotoxic and anti-genotoxic potential against MNNG. Both rose products exerted genoprotective potential to a similar extent, decreasing the frequencies of aberrations in chromosomes and micronuclei to a significant degree in both types of cells when non-toxic concentrations of hydrosols were applied before MNNG. This was performed both with and without any inter-treatment time. The observed cytoprotective/genoprotective potential suggests that these hydrosols are promising for further application in phytotherapy and medicine
