Contextual effects of power differentials: Construct validation and concurrent validity of the Power Differential Scale

Power distance can produce contextual effects that surpass the cultural level of analysis, allowing predicting how the assimilation of these cultural values impacts individuals motivations to attain power positions and behaviors towards authorities. Power distance value can be conceived both at a micro and macro level of analysis. However existing measures used at a cultural level have been the object of several critics, and others applied at the individual level need further study in terms of their psychometric properties. This article presents the main psychometric properties of the Earley and Erez (1997) Power Differential Scale. This scale measures the acceptability of power and status differences both at micro and macro level. Two studies analyse the scale’s construct validity and its factorial invariance across groups of participants (study 1); and its predictive validity at an individual level (study 2). The results obtained support the proposed unidimensionality of the scale. Furthermore, it demonstrated predictive power by showing the role of power distance in the prediction of individual motivations to attain power and to respond to power situations using withdrawal or confrontational strategies. Future research is discussed, specifically the impact of power differential construct in individual attitudes and behavior

The present paper considers and analyzes the role of management and entrepreneurship on the firm and region sustainability. This relation was explored in terms of managers’ behaviour related to three aspects of sustainable development, namely, economic, social and environmental.Through a questionnaire survey of 251 micro, small and medium firms in Vale do Sousa region located in the Northern Portugal, it was discovered that, contrary to what most of literature presents, managers are putting in first place the environmental aspect of sustainability, followed by the social aspect, and the economic as the last one. These results lead to a characterization of firms as being sustainable, but with a risk-averse and non innovative behaviour on the part of the firms’ management.small firms, entrepreneurship, sustainability

Black Immigrants in Portugal: LusoTropicalism and Prejudice

    Get PDF
This article analyzes the relationship between the luso–tropicalist representation of the history of Portuguese colonization and overt as well as covert expressions of anti-immigrant prejudice. The luso–tropicalist representation emphasizes the uniqueness of the Portuguese colonial relations based on Portuguese empathy and capacity to deal with people from different cultures. This representation was created during Salazar’s dictatorial regime and is still assumed to be a dimension of Portuguese national identity. The empirical findings presented in this article show that this luso–tropicalist representation may explain the salience of the norm against prejudice in Portugal and may contribute to weaken the traditional association between national identity and overt prejudice. A second dimension of the association between luso–tropicalism and integration of Black immigrants in Portuguese society was examined, that is, the impact of luso–tropicalism on the attribution and covert evaluation of cultural differences between White Portuguese and Black immigrants. Results show that despite the luso–tropicalist representation, White Portuguese individuals express a covert negative evaluation of cultural differences attributed to Black immigrants. This means that the luso–tropicalist representation can protect against the expression of overt prejudice but not against its covert dimensions

The research projectpresented belowdelves into the largest andmost significant challenges thatstart-up founders face between their ideationand first round of investment phases.Throughliterature review on the subject matter it is postulated that these are mostly related to lengthylegal procedures,a lack of a science-basedapproach to building a business, andtensions betweenpartnersand investorsof the start-ups. However, interviews reveal that the issues most present in founders’minds are those related to recruitment, decision-times, and clarity in procedures

Corn is a crop of great socio-economic importance due to its high energy value and use in human and animal food. This study aimed to evaluate the agronomic characteristics of corn grown with boron (B) sources and doses. The experimental design was a randomized block arranged in a 3x4 factorial scheme with four replications. Three B sources (boric acid, borax, and ulexite) and four doses (0; 1.5; 3.0, and 4.5 kg ha-1) were evaluated. The experiment was carried out over two consecutive crop seasons. The variables analyzed were plant height, first ear insertion height, ear length, number of grain rows per ear, number of grains per row, 1000-grain weight, and grain yield. The data was submitted for analysis of variance, and the means were compared using the Tukey test at 5% significance. For ear length, there was an interaction between the factors in the first year, and at a dose of 1.5 kg ha-1, Boric Acid was superior to Borax and Ulexite. Regarding grain yield, there was a difference between the sources and doses in the two crop seasons, and Ulexite was superior to the other sources. The regression analysis estimated the highest grain yield with doses of 1.6 kg ha-1 and 2.03 kg ha-1 in the first and second crop seasons, respectively. There was no difference between the sources and doses of B for plant height, first ear insertion height, number of grain rows per ear, number of grains per row, and 1000-grain weight.O milho é uma cultura de grande importância socioeconômica, devido seu alto valor energético e utilização na alimentação humana e animal.

This research intends to identify, through the genealogy of the performance Acts of the Transfiguration - disappearance or recipe of how to make a saint, the symbolism of the body as element of religious contestation. This object is the starting point for understanding the architecture of the work of the artist Antonio Obá, which reveals racial issues from the deconstruction of one of the main religious symbols of Brazil, Nossa Senhora Aparecida, a black madona and the country's patron saint. The performance is one of the artist's best known works of art, which also works with drawings, paintings and photographs. The analysis of his production intends also to collaborate with the understanding of this moment in which elements such as body, religiosity and contemporary art are crossed, starting from a brief retrospect on the presence of the black man and his aesthetic and sacred values in the history of Brazilian art

On Rio Grande do Sul the seasons of the year are well defined being felt, in its peculiar characteristics, in the winter,in the spring, in the summer and in the autumn. The pluviometric regime is quite regular and the precipitations are welldistributed during all the year on the State. The Multivariate Enso Index (MEI) lacks of a study about its relations withthe precipitation. It is a numeric index that integrates the action of different factors that characterize the phenomenon andthat oscilate between positive values for the warm phase, the El Niño, and negative values for the cold phase, the La Niña.It considers, in its composition, the following variables: sea level pressure, zonal and meridional wind components at thesurface, the Sea Surface Temperature (SST), the air temperature at the surface and a cloudiness indicator. This work hadthe objective to study the relations between the MEI and the SST of the Niño regions with the precipitations on Rio Grandedo Sul State. For this, it were utilized total monthly data of precipitation from 40 meteorological stations of Rio Grande doSul, bimonthly data of MEI and SST of the Niño regions for the period 1950 to 2002. The correlation coefficients betweenthe precipitation of the Rio Grande Do Sul with the MEI and the regions of the Niños showed low values due to the factof if using only the months of the beginning and end of the event. The MEI, although to be a more complex index of themethodologic point of view, it does not improve the coefficients of correlation with the precipitation of the State of the RioGrande do Sul, and it always presents lesser or equal values to obtained when using the TSM of the regions of the Niñosin the out/nov and nov/dez coupled of months. The MEI and the Niños regions 3 and 3.4 present the highest correlationcoefficient with the Rio Grande do Sul State precipitation for the bimonths oct/nov and nov/dec
