    Reaction to the Arthurs Report

    It is now more than two years since the publication of Law and Learning: The Report of The Consultative Group on Research and Education in Law to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, known to all legal academics as the Arthurs Report . In that time the Canadian Bar Review has published one commentary on the Report and there have been a few comments in academic law journals, but the reaction in print is not commensurate with the importance of the Report or the interest in it among teachers and scholars of law in Canada generally and at the Dalhousie Law School in particular. Moreover, it is important not only to Canada\u27s law faculties and the practicing legal profession but also to scholars in related disciplines, to the teachers and advisors of future law students and to those future law students themselves. All will do well to understand the implications of the Report, and their contributions would enrich any debate about its findings and recommendations

    PKS 1814-637:a powerful radio-loud AGN in a disk galaxy

    We present a detailed study of PKS1814-637, a rare case of powerful radio source (P_5 GHz = 4.1 x 10^25 W/Hz) hosted by a disk galaxy. Optical images have been used to model the host galaxy morphology confirming it to be dominated by a strong (and warped) disk component that is observed close to edge-on. At radio wavelengths, PKS1814-637 is about 480 pc in diameter and it is classified as a compact steep spectrum source; such sources are usually considered to be radio sources observed in the early stages of their evolution. However, the optical and mid-IR spectroscopic properties of PKS1814-637 show more in common with Seyfert galaxies than they do with radio galaxies, with the detection of H_2, and PAH emission features, along with HI and silicate absorption features, providing evidence for a rich ISM, likely related to the disk morphology of the host galaxy. The interaction between the radio plasma and the rich ISM in this and similar objects may have boosted their radio emission, allowing them to more easily enter flux limited samples of radio sources. In this case, PKS1814-637 represents a type of "imposter": an intrinsically low power object that is selected in a radio flux limited sample because of the unusually efficient conversion of jet power into radio emission. This would make PKS1814-637 an extreme example of the effects of jet-cloud interactions in galaxies containing a rich ISM, and perhaps a missing link between radio galaxies and radio-loud Seyfert galaxies. However, it is probable that the jet in PKS1814-637 is also intrinsically more powerful than in typical Seyfert galaxies. The estimated BH mass is indeed higher than the majority of Seyfert galaxies in the local Universe. It suggests the importance for educators of evaluating these representations in terms of the messages they contain about how social processes operate. The paper uses school geography texts in Britain since the 1970s to illustrate the different ways in which economic space has been represented to students, before exploring some alternative resources that could be used to provide a wider range of representations of economic space. The paper highlights the continued importance of understanding the politics of school knowledge

    Based on literature review and on the study of the most known and referred Crowdsourcing brokers, there's a clear trend to implement this model by large companies and mainly within the North American context. Our research team is focused in bringing this approach closer to the European culture, more specifically the cultural factors underlying the dynamics and motivation of communities available to solve the innovation challenges of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), that we call Crowdsourcing Innovation. We believe that, due to the common lack of resources for innovation in these companies, a service capable of involving them in large networks filled with useful and reachable knowledge, and capable of supporting these companies through all the innovation process, is crucial to the future competitiveness of the European SMEs. Although our team is focusing on several aspects related to Crowdsourcing, my main research focuses the information services and supporting applications to create a web platform adapted to the key economical, organizational, legal and cultural differences that make current Crowdsourcing Innovation businesses less popular among European SMEs than in North America.- (undefined

    Risk of diabetes mellitus among users of immune checkpoint inhibitors: A population‐based cohort study

    Background Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are increasingly established cancer therapeutics, but they are associated with new-onset diabetes mellitus (DM). Such risks have not been adequately quantified, and between-class and -sex differences remain unexplored. Methods This was a prospective cohort study of cancer patients receiving any ICI in Hong Kong between 2013 and 2021. Patients with known DM were excluded. Due to few patients using other ICIs, only programmed cell death 1 inhibitors (PD-1i) and programmed death ligand 1 inhibitors (PD-L1i) were compared, alongside between-sex comparison. When comparing PD-1i against PD-L1i, patients with the use of other ICIs or both PD-1i and PD-L1 were further excluded. Inverse probability treatment weighting (IPTW) was used to minimize between-group covariate imbalances. Results Altogether, 3375 patients were analyzed (65.2% males, median age 62.2 [interquartile range 53.8–69.5] years old). Over a median follow-up of 1.0 [0.4–2.4] years, new-onset DM occurred in 457 patients (13.5%), with a 3-year risk of 14.5% [95% confidence interval 13.3%, 15.8%]. IPTW achieve acceptable covariate balance between sexes, and between PD-1i (N = 622) and PD-L1i (N = 2426) users. Males had significantly higher risk of new-onset DM (hazard ratio 1.35 [1.09, 1.67], p = 0.006), while PD-1i and PD-L1i users did not have significantly different risks (hazard ratio vs PD-L1i 0.81 [0.59, 1.11], p = 0.182). These were consistent in those with at least 1 year of follow-up, and on competing risk regression. Conclusion Users of ICI may have a substantial risk of new-onset DM, which may be higher in males but did not differ between PD-1i and PD-L1i

    Economic crisis and the construction of a neo-liberal regulatory regime in Korea

    A consistent theme of the literature on the ontology of the 1997 South Korean crisis is the key role played by regulatory failures and the growing weakness of the state. This paper seeks to briefly highlight both the insights and the limitations of this approach to understanding the crisis. Having done so, we shall set out the argument that the crisis created an opportunity for reformist Korean élites to advance their longstanding, but previously frustrated, project to create a comprehensive unambiguously neo-liberal regulatory regime. This paper will also seek to highlight the implications of our reading of the development of the Korean political economy for broader debates on economic liberalisation, crisis and the future of the developmental state

    Planck's Dusty GEMS: Gravitationally lensed high-redshift galaxies discovered with the Planck survey

    We present an analysis of 11 bright far-IR/submm sources discovered through a combination of the Planck survey and follow-up Herschel-SPIRE imaging. Each source has a redshift z=2.2-3.6 obtained through a blind redshift search with EMIR at the IRAM 30-m telescope. Interferometry obtained at IRAM and the SMA, and optical/near-infrared imaging obtained at the CFHT and the VLT reveal morphologies consistent with strongly gravitationally lensed sources. Additional photometry was obtained with JCMT/SCUBA-2 and IRAM/GISMO at 850 um and 2 mm, respectively. All objects are bright, isolated point sources in the 18 arcsec beam of SPIRE at 250 um, with spectral energy distributions peaking either near the 350 um or the 500 um bands of SPIRE, and with apparent far-infrared luminosities of up to 3x10^14 L_sun. Their morphologies and sizes, CO line widths and luminosities, dust temperatures, and far-infrared luminosities provide additional empirical evidence that these are strongly gravitationally lensed high-redshift galaxies. We discuss their dust masses and temperatures, and use additional WISE 22-um photometry and template fitting to rule out a significant contribution of AGN heating to the total infrared luminosity. Six sources are detected in FIRST at 1.4 GHz. Four have flux densities brighter than expected from the local far-infrared-radio correlation, but in the range previously found for high-z submm galaxies, one has a deficit of FIR emission, and 6 are consistent with the local correlation. The global dust-to-gas ratios and star-formation efficiencies of our sources are predominantly in the range expected from massive, metal-rich, intense, high-redshift starbursts.     Strong molecular hydrogen emission and kinematics of the multiphase gas in radio galaxies with fast jet-driven outflows

    Observations of ionized and neutral gas outflows in radio-galaxies (RGs) suggest that AGN radio jet feedback has a galaxy-scale impact on the host ISM, but it is still unclear how the molecular gas is affected. We present deep Spitzer IRS spectroscopy of 8 RGs that show fast HI outflows. All of these HI-outflow RGs have bright H2 mid-IR lines that cannot be accounted for by UV or X-ray heating. This suggests that the radio jet, which drives the HI outflow, is also responsible for the shock-excitation of the warm H2 gas. In addition, the warm H2 gas does not share the kinematics of the ionized/neutral gas. The mid-IR ionized gas lines are systematically broader than the H2 lines, which are resolved by the IRS (with FWHM up to 900km/s) in 60% of the detected H2 lines. In 5 sources, the NeII line, and to a lesser extent the NeIII and NeV lines, exhibit blue-shifted wings (up to -900km/s with respect to the systemic velocity) that match the kinematics of the outflowing HI or ionized gas. The H2 lines do not show broad wings, except tentative detections in 3 sources. This shows that, contrary to the HI gas, the H2 gas is inefficiently coupled to the AGN jet-driven outflow of ionized gas. While the dissipation of a small fraction (<10%) of the jet kinetic power can explain the dynamical heating of the molecular gas, our data show that the bulk of the warm molecular gas is not expelled from these galaxies.Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures, Accepted for ublication in Ap

    Global-local dynamics in the transformation of the Jakarta Metropolitan Area into a global city-region

    This paper investigates the way in which factors at the global and local level interact in the emergence and development of “global city-regions”, which are deemed to be the contemporary growth machines of the global economy. To this end, this paper takes the Jakarta metropolitan area (JMA) as a case to investigate its evolution in the context of the intertwined dynamics of foreign direct investment (FDI) inflow and state intervention over the past three decades. The findings indicate that from a macro-level perspective the JMA has maintained its position as the country’s hotspot for manufacturing investment embedded in East Asian production networks. In addition, we find that the national state has continuously privileged the JMA as the main grounds for national economic development in spite of the country’s shifting political system. We reveal how the nexus between “global” forces (incoming FDI) and “local” conditions (the state’s strategic intervention) has led to the development and restructuring of the JMA as a global city-region
