    Giant and Broadband THz and IR Emission in Drift-biased Graphene-Based Hyperbolic Nanostructures

    We demonstrate that Cherenkov radiation can be manipulated in terms of operation frequency, bandwidth, and efficiency by simultaneously controlling the properties of drifting electrons and the photonic states supported by their surrounding media. We analytically show that the radiation rate strongly depends on the momentum of the excited photonic state, in terms of magnitude, frequency dispersion, and its variation versus the properties of the drifting carriers. This approach is applied to design and realize miniaturized, broadband, tunable, and efficient terahertz and far-infrared sources by manipulating and boosting the coupling between drifting electrons and engineered hyperbolic modes in graphene-based nanostructures. The broadband, dispersive, and confined nature of hyperbolic modes relax momentum matching issues, avoid using electron beams, and drastically enhance the radiation rate - allowing that over 90% of drifting electrons emit photons. Our findings open a new paradigm for the development of solid-state terahertz and infrared sources.Comment: 4 figure

    Comparison of methods to estimate ruminal degradation and intestinal digestibility of protein in hydrolyzed feather meal with or without blood

    Hydrolyzed feather meal (HFM) is a feedstuff high in rumen undegraded protein (RUP) that can be used as an effective source of metabolizable protein for dairy cattle. Because the production process may vary, the rumen degradability and intestinal digestibility of HFM may also vary. Additionally, some processes may incorporate additional blood into the final product to result in feather meal with poultry blood. To determine the rumen degradability and intestinal digestibility of these products, several laboratory assays can be used; the common assays are the mobile bag (MOB), modified three-step (MTS), and Ross (ROS) assays. Although all 3 assays determine RUP digestibility, they vary in whether they are performed in situ, in vitro, or both. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ruminal degradability and intestinal digestibility of HFM originating from processes that differ in their inclusion of blood, and to compare the MOB, MTS, and ROS assays. Ten samples of HFM, which were identified by the suppliers as HFM with little blood (n = 5) and with more blood (n = 5), were spot-sampled, collected from 10 production plants across the United States, and subjected to all 3 assays. Assay type had an effect on RUP, total-tract crude protein (CP) digestibility, and the amount of RUP digested. A significant effect was observed on RDP and RUP concentrations for blood inclusion; no effect was detected for total-tract CP digestibility. We found no difference in RUP digestibility for assay or blood inclusion. There was also no interaction of the effect of assay or blood inclusion. Results suggest that even though there are differences in chemical composition in HFM associated with the inclusion of blood, such as ash and crude fat, few if any differences are observed in intestinal digestion of protein. Although the assays varied in their estimates of rumen undegraded protein, MOB and MTS yielded the most similar values. However, all 3 assays resulted in similar estimates of RUP digestibility

    In vivo investigation of the tissue response to commercial Teflon insulin infusion sets in large swine for 14 days: the effect of angle of insertion on tissue histology and insulin spread within the subcutaneous tissue.

    Objective: This study investigated the effects of the inflammatory tissue response (ITR) to an insulin infusion set (IIS) on insulin bolus spread over wear time, as well as the effect of cannula insertion angle on the ITR, bolus shape, and pump tubing pressure. Research design and methods: Angled or straight IISs were inserted every other day for 14 days into the subcutaneous tissue of 11 swine and insulin was delivered continuously. Prior to euthanasia, a 70 µL bolus of insulin/X-ray contrast agent was infused while recording a pressure profile (peak tubing pressure, pmax; area under the pressure curve, AUC), followed by the excision of the tissue-catheter specimen. Bolus surface area (SA) and volume (V) were assessed via micro-CT. Tissue was stained to analyze total area of inflammation (TAI) and inflammatory layer thickness (ILT) surrounding the cannula. Results: A bolus delivered through an angled IIS had a larger mean SA than a bolus delivered through a straight cannula (314.0±84.2 mm2 vs 229.0±99.7 mm2, p\u3c0.001) and a larger volume (198.7±66.9 mm3 vs 145.0±65.9 mm3, p=0.001). Both decreased significantly over wear time, independent of angle. There was a significant difference in TAI (angled, 9.1±4.0 mm2 vs straight, 14.3±8.6 mm2, p\u3c0.001) and ILT (angled, 0.7±0.4 vs straight, 1.2±0.7 mm, p\u3c0.001). pmax (p=0.005) and AUC (p=0.014) were lower using angled IIS. As ILT increased, pmax increased, while SA and V decreased. Conclusions: The progression of the ITR directly affected bolus shape and tubing pressure. Although straight insertion is clinically preferred, our data suggest that an angled IIS elicits lower grades of ITR and delivers a bolus with lower tubing pressure and greater SA and V. The subcutaneous environment plays a crucial role in IIS longevity, and the insertion angle needs to be considered in future IIS designs and clinical trials

    Antihypertensive Medication Classes Used among Medicare Beneficiaries Initiating Treatment in 2007–2010

    Background After the 2003 publication of the Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC 7) guidelines, there was a 5–10% increase in patients initiating antihypertensive medication with a thiazide-type diuretic, but most patients still did not initiate treatment with this class. There are few contemporary published data on antihypertensive medication classes filled by patients initiating treatment. Methods and Findings We used the 5% random Medicare sample to study the initiation of antihypertensive medication between 2007 and 2010. Initiation was defined by the first antihypertensive medication fill preceded by 365 days with no antihypertensive medication fills. We restricted our analysis to beneficiaries ≥65 years who had two or more outpatient visits with a hypertension diagnosis and full Medicare fee-for-service coverage for the 365 days prior to initiation of antihypertensive medication. Between 2007 and 2010, 32,142 beneficiaries in the 5% Medicare sample initiated antihypertensive medication. Initiation with a thiazide-type diuretic decreased from 19.2% in 2007 to 17.9% in 2010. No other changes in medication classes initiated occurred over this period. Among those initiating antihypertensive medication in 2010, 31.3% filled angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE-Is), 26.9% filled beta blockers, 17.2% filled calcium channel blockers, and 14.4% filled angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). Initiation with %#62;1 antihypertensive medication class decreased from 25.6% in 2007 to 24.1% in 2010. Patients initiated >1 antihypertensive medication class most commonly with a thiazide-type diuretic and either an ACE-I or ARB. Conclusion These results suggest that JNC 7 had a limited long-term impact on the choice of antihypertensive medication class and provide baseline data prior to the publication of the 2014 Evidence-Based Guideline for the Management of High Blood Pressure in Adults from the Panel Members Appointed to the Eighth Joint National Committee (JNC 8)

    Background: From birth, the human propensity to selectively attend and respond to critical super-stimuli forms the basis of future socio-emotional development and health. In particular, the first super-stimuli to preferentially engage and elicit responses in the healthy newborn are the physical touch, voice and face/eyes of caregivers. From this grows selective attention and responsiveness to emotional expression, scaffolding the development of empathy, social cognition, and other higher human capacities. In this paper, the protocol for a longitudinal, prospective birth-cohort study is presented. The major aim of this study is to map the emergence of individual differences and disturbances in the system of social-Responsiveness, Emotional Attention, and Learning (REAL) through the first 3 years of life to predict the specific emergence of the major childhood mental health problems, as well as social adjustment and impairment more generally. A further aim of this study is to examine how the REAL variables interact with the quality of environment/caregiver interactions. Methods/Design: A prospective, longitudinal birth-cohort study will be conducted. Data will be collected from four assessments and mothers' electronic medical records. Discussion: This study will be the first to test a clear developmental map of both the unique and specific causes of childhood psychopathology and will identify more precise early intervention targets for children with complex comorbid conditions

    Neuroprotective effects of PGC-1α activators in dopaminergic neurons

Disturbed cell signaling and protein metabolism as well as mitochondrial dysfunctions are thought to be involved in several neurodegenerative diseases. Mitochondria are the major source of energy in the cell, and they also regulate cell death. In brain, neurons are highly dependent on oxidative energy metabolism. Mitochondrial dysfunctions cause oxidative stress with an excess production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson s disease (PD), ROS are thought to contribute to the loss of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc), which leads to dopamine depletion in striatum. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α) is a transcriptional co-activator that regulates mitochondrial biogenesis, ROS defense and respiration. The lack of PGC-1α has been shown to increase the sensitivity of neurons to oxidative stress and brain injuries. In this study we show that increasing the expression of PGC-1α protects against toxin-induced oxidative stress in dopaminergic neurons. We show that PGC-1α expression in dopaminergic neurons can be modulated by resveratrol (RSV), fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) and peroxisome proliferator- activated receptor γ (PPARγ) that are known to regulate metabolism in other tissues. The increase in PGC-1α expression and activation was linked to metabolic changes mimicing low energy levels in the cell, and an increase in SIRT1, a metabolic regulator sensing changes in energy levels. PGC-1α activation was further associated with an increase in mitochondrial respiration and antioxidant levels suggesting that the neuroprotective effect of PGC-1α was due to an improved capacity to combat oxidative stress. These results show that regulation of metabolism by PGC-1α activators could be a useful tool to prevent neurodegeneration in PD. In addition to modulating PGC-1α, RSV was also found to increase the expression of dopamine transporter (DAT) in dopaminergic neurons of female mice. The increase in the level of DAT increases the uptake of dopamine, further indicating that RSV has beneficial effects in dopaminergic neurons. By affecting DAT, RSV also contributes to maintaining functional neurons, as a decline in DAT has been associated with degeneration of dopaminergic neurons. This effect on DAT expression was mediated by estrogen receptors, indicating that the effect of RSV differs between genders that should be considered if RSV is used as therapy for patients with PD

    Revised Architecture and Two New Super-Earths in the HD 134606 Planetary System

Radial velocity (RV) surveys form a crucial component of exoplanet surveys, as their long observational baselines allow for searches for more distant planetary orbits. This work provides a significantly revised architecture for the multiplanet system HD 134606 using both HARPS and UCLES RVs. We confirm the presence of previously reported planets b, c, and d with periods of 12.0897 − 0.0018 + 0.0019 , 58.947 − 0.054 + 0.056 , and 958.7 − 5.9 + 6.3 days and masses of 9.14 − 0.63 + 0.65 , 11.0 ± 1, and 44.5 ± 2.9 Earth masses, respectively, with the planet d orbit significantly revised to over double that originally reported. We report two newly detected super-Earths, e and f, with periods of 4.31943 − 0.00068 + 0.00075 and 26.9 − 0.017 + 0.019 days and masses of 2.31 − 0.35 + 0.36 and 5.52 − 0.73 + 0.74 Earth masses, respectively. In addition, we identify a linear trend in the RV time series, and the cause of this acceleration is deemed to be a newly detected massive companion with a very long orbital period. HD 134606 now displays four low-mass planets in a compact region near the star, one gas giant further out in the habitable zone, an additional companion in the outer regime, and a low-mass M dwarf stellar companion at large separation, making it an intriguing target for system formation/evolution studies. The location of planet d in the habitable zone proves to be an exciting candidate for future space-based direct imaging missions, whereas continued RV observations of this system are recommended for understanding the nature of the massive, long-period companion.Peer reviewe

    Planning for Sustainability in Small Municipalities: The Influence of Interest Groups, Growth Patterns, and Institutional Characteristics

    How and why small municipalities promote sustainability through planning efforts is poorly understood. We analyzed ordinances in 451 Maine municipalities and tested theories of policy adoption using regression analysis.We found that smaller communities do adopt programs that contribute to sustainability relevant to their scale and context. In line with the political market theory, we found that municipalities with strong environmental interests, higher growth, and more formal governments were more likely to adopt these policies. Consideration of context and capacity in planning for sustainability will help planners better identify and benefit from collaboration, training, and outreach opportunities
