A sign of hope:a Peruvian effort to overcome the national education crisis in reading comprehension

Abstract. This thesis focuses on two vital elements of a reading comprehension program called “Reading is being forward”: the textbooks and the teacher’s accompaniment model. It is a qualitative study based on thematic analysis using the theoretical points of Schema Theory and Cognitive view of learning to read. The theoretical framework states that, in order to achieve reading comprehension, the background knowledge of the reader must be activated by pre, during and post-reading activities. These activities should promote, in this case, the cognitive learning. This means that the student is always aware of what he/she is learning and with what kind of educational tools. Two textbooks will be analyzed and the Teacher’s Accompaniment Form (TFA) used to observe teacher’s pedagogical practices in classrooms. The objective is to find what elements presents in the textbooks and in the Teacher’s Accompaniment Form follows the theoretical framework and how do they work in the teaching and learning of reading comprehension skills. The thematic categories arise in a deductive way always focused on the theoretical framework and they display teacher’s and student’s guidelines as well as the abilities and moment of reading. These categories constitute the deep structure of the textbooks and they showed a way to be teach and learn. The articulation between thematic categories and sub-categories states that learning can be improved from a gradual development of skills and strategies manifested in the structure of the textbooks. In the case of TAF, the categories reveal that the questions to be answered by the accompanying person are guided by the principles of the five standards for evaluating good teaching practices: productive joint activity, language and literacy development, contextualization, challenging activities and instructional conversation. These standards are aligned with what is proposed by the theoretical framework because the questions are about concrete pedagogical practices that help to activate the previous knowledge of the students and to conduct cognitive methods that help in the acquisition of reading skills. In this way, companions can provide feedback by emphasizing cognitive concepts and the activation of prior knowledge

Diseño de una secuencia didáctica para el aprendizaje de la orientación espacial a través de la coordinación de registros de representación semiótico en GeoGebra 3D en grado tercero de primaria

Esta propuesta tiene por finalidad ayudar al aprendizaje de la orientación espacial en estudiantes de tercero de primaria a través de una secuencia didáctica, inscrita en la problemática de calles y carreras y puntos cardinales, que moviliza la coordinación entre el registro de representación discursivo (lenguaje natural) y el no discurso (lenguaje gráfico) en el software GeoGebra (vista 3D), por medio de situaciones que buscan movilizar el proceso de conversión1 entre estos registros. Regulatory review and analysis of European Union and Colombian Persistent Organic Pollutants in compost and its impact

Paper submitted to the International Conference of Agricultural Engineering - CIGR-AgEng 2012: Agriculture and Engineering for a Healthier Life, Valencia, Spain, 8-12 July 2012.Within the current Spanish and Colombian environmental policies related to urban waste, the use of organic waste through composting for use as fertilizer for agricultural use is promoted. There is a deficient classification of waste and pollution generated by the mixture of organic residues and therefore the presence of toxic elements or compounds such as Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). These compounds have bioaccumulating and biomagnifying characteristics and they move easily on air, water and fat. They have harmful effects on health and the environment, affecting food webs, food chains and can be precursors, as indicated by some studies, of infertility, cancer, obesity or diabetes (Porta, M., 2009). Therefore, and in order to meet existing regulations on POPs in urban compost in Spain and Colombia, a descriptive study was conducted to review legal texts and codes. This study concluded that there are health and environmental standards defining the maximum permissible quality limits to be met by the compost that is currently earmarked for agricultural use. That leads to an urgent need for political decision makers, researchers, scientific societies, academic and labor from different disciplines work together to regulate POPs content in the compost produced from organic waste

Estudio de mercado para indagar sobre la demanda potencial de una papilla a base de cereal lista para consumo en la ciudad de Pereira

La papilla a base de cereal lista para consumo es un alimento que permite complementar la dieta de los niños y niñas, en especial de aquellos que se encuentran en estado de desnutrición; es además un producto que suministra gran cantidad de proteínas, minerales, vitaminas y ácidos grasos esenciales -- Su principal componente, el almidón, es tolerado y perfectamente digerido por el lactante, y no genera problemas como algunos productos a base de leche no modificada que son suministrados en edades no aptas para el consumo de este tipo de alimentos -- A través de un estudio de mercado realizado por muestreo estadístico, complementado con la técnica de la voz del cliente (VOC) y apoyado no solo en los análisis externo e interno de la industria de los alimentos, sino también en fortalezas, debilidades, oportunidades y amenazas de la incursión del producto en el mercado, se identificó que en la ciudad de Pereira el 94% de las madres o acudientes de niños menores a cinco años están dispuestos a incluir dentro de la dieta alimentaria la papilla a base de cereal lista para el consumo, producto poco conocido y desabastecido en el mercado -- Como complemento a este estudio se desarrollaron estrategias de marketing que permitirán poner a prueba un modelo de fijación de precios, distribuir y comercializar el producto y promoverlo en el mercado regiona

Genetic variation associated with adaptive traits in the African forest (Loxodonta cyclotis) and savanna elephant (L. africana) [abstract]

Abstract only availableThere are two species of African elephant, the forest (Loxodonta cyclotis) and savanna elephant (L. africana). The savanna elephant is believed to have diverged from the forest species approximately 2.6 million years ago. The different ecologies of the forest and savanna habitat have produced unique adaptations in both species. Variation in behavior and morphological traits are observed between these species, and they likely possess variation in genes underlying adaptive traits. In particular, genetic variation may have helped the savanna elephant adapt to the direct sunlight of the savanna versus the shade of the canopy, and from a browsing diet in the forest that is poor in iron to a grazing diet that is rich in iron. This type of genetic variation is of great importance since patterns of adaptive variation may help predict future effects of adaptive selection in these species. Future conservation efforts may be tailored to fit the species adaptive needs, promoting their long-term survival. We are comparing sequences of genes believed to underlie adaptive mechanisms in both species to determine whether there is variation. DNA was extracted from 15 savanna elephant blood samples and 15 forest elephant fecal samples. We screened three primers used in other species and chose the IRBP and HFE1 loci for amplification and sequencing in the sampled populations. Sequences for both species were aligned and compared. We found variation at the HFE1 locus between the two species. We are currently establishing homology between the elephant sequence and rhinocerous and horse HFE. THE EFFICIENT FRONTIER AN THE LIMITS ON INVESTMENT FOR PENSION PLAN ADMINISTRATORS (AFP) A New Perspective

This article provides a re-estimation of the pension plan funds administrators’ efficient frontier. The goal here is two-fold: on the one hand it measures the effect of investment limits imposed by regulators. Unlike previous studies, here the short positions are not limited; this assumption is based upon the completeness of the financial markets: when the markets are completed, any financial instrument may be replicated. On the other hand, this article measures the performance of the pension plan funds. In earlier works, the performance was measured as the difference between the profitability in the frontier and the one obtained at the level of a given risk; here the return is measured as the relationship of optimal risk profitability and the one obtained. Revisión del plan parcial centro "El Corazón de la Ciudad" con énfasis en los componentes ambiental y de movilidad del Municipio de Pasto

El centro histórico de Pasto, ha sido objeto de múltiples alteraciones en su estructura y composición urbanística y arquitectónica con el pasar de los años, generando un alto grado de deterioro y pérdida de piezas e inmuebles patrimoniales por falta de normatividad y reglamentación que controle la regulación de las intervenciones sobre el sector, por estas necesidades y beneficiados con la ley 388 de 1997, se constituyó el plan parcial centro "El Corazón de la Ciudad" dado en San Juan de Pasto, según el decreto No 531del cuatro de agosto de 2005, con el objeto de facilitar la presencia de inversión pública y privada en el área central de la ciudad de tal forma que, respetando los valores arquitectónicos y la identidad cultural, así como los requerimientos ambientales, se fomente el desarrollo de actividades que recuperen la vitalidad urbana del sector, haciendo del centro de Pasto un lugar de interés y atracción, tanto para pastusos y pastusas como para visitantes. Con el desarrollo de esta investigación se pretende generar un instrumento de seguimiento y toma de decisiones para la administración municipal y la comunidad en general sobre el plan parcial centro, analizando los capítulos que hacen parte de él, revisando el diagnóstico, e identificando y los alcances obtenidos hasta el momento. Cabe resaltar que se hizo énfasis en el capítulo dos que se refiere a movilidad y el capitulo sexto sobre Medio Ambiente, investigando que otros planes, programas y proyectos desarrollaron a partir de este plan en instituciones y/o organizaciones del medio, se consulto la opinión de los habitantes del sector y la población flotante que constantemente atraviesa este sector y se plantearon algunas alternativas de intervención que pueden ser adoptadas por la administración que conlleven a la conservación, preservación y desarrollo del centro histórico de la ciudad

Tomorrow's EFL teacher educators

ABSTRACT: Teacher education programs are an important alternative to raise standards in the teaching of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). However, there are few studies that have explored the roles of teacher educators in this setting. Three main research questions guided this study: What actions have teachers taken to attain their professional objectives as EFL teachers? What experience have they had in professional development programs? What are the characteristics of an ideal teacher education program? This paper reports the findings concentrating on the ideal characteristics of an EFL teacher educator analyzing the testimonies of teachers from public and private schools. The study used four focus groups sessions and a questionnaire as the main data collection techniques. The results suggest that issues such as knowledge of local realities, broad experience in teaching EFL, command of the language, and experience in research are identified as the most desirable characteristics of EFL teacher educators.RESUMEN: Los programas de formación de docentes son una alternativa para elevar los estándares en la enseñanza del inglés como lengua extranjera (ILE). Sin embargo, hay pocos estudios que hayan explorado los papeles de los formadores de docentes en este contexto. Tres preguntas orientaron este estudio: Qué acciones han tomado los docentes para lograr sus metas profesionales como docentes de inglés como lengua extranjera? ¿Qué experiencia han tenido en los programas de desarrollo profesional? ¿Cuáles son las características ideales de un programa de formación de docentes de inglés como lengua extranjera? Este artículo presenta los resultados concentrándose en las características ideales de un formador de docentes de inglés como lengua extranjera a través del análisis de los testimonios de docentes de colegios públicos y privados. Para el estudio se utilizaron como técnicas de recolección de los datos cuatro sesiones de grupos focales y un cuestionario. Los resultados sugieren que aspectos como conocimiento de la realidad local, amplia experiencia en la enseñanza de inglés como lengua extranjera, dominio del idioma y experiencia en investigación fueron identificados como las características más esperadas de los formadores de docentes de inglés como lengua extranjer
