Understanding the urban environment as a “pulsing” locus of socio-political resistance, this paper intends to link the cuts made in the buildings by the architect and artist Gordon Matta-Clark with the cuts in the body promoted by body modification supporters, as one of the communication urban phenomena of the “style tribes.” The aim of this work is to analyze how such insubordinations to the organization of the city as well as to the docility of the bodies offer a possibility of construction that effectively undergoes destruction, and also its communication. Regarding the methodological issues in this essay, we are proposing a study from two different perspectives that can dialogue with each other: an inquiry constructed on a bibliographical and documentary analysis about these interventions promoted by the architect, as well as a field work in body modification in São Paulo. Our observations are founded on the readings of Walter Benjamin, Simmel, Mauss and Le Breton; authors who view the city and the body as socially and culturally constructed. Keywords: city, body, communication, body modification, transfiguration.
Hepatitis C in prisoners and non-prisoners in Colatina, Espírito Santo, Brazil
The aim of the present work was to compare hepatitis C prevalence, genotypes, and risk factors between prisoners and non-prisoners in the city of Colatina, Espírito Santo, Brazil. This cross-sectional study involved approximately 1,600 residents and 730 prisoners, all of whom were living in Colatina. The percentage of individuals who tested positive for anti-HCV was 0.1% (2/1,600) in the non-prisoner group and 1.0% (7/730) in the prisoner group, confirming a higher risk of hepatitis C in the latter group. The percentage of subjects who progressed to HCV-RNA negative was 11.1% (1/9), confirming the high probability of evolution to chronicity. Genotype 1 was the most predominant genotype found. Factors associated with increased risk of hepatitis C were being male, being institutionalized, having an income of less than three minimum wages, having low educational attainment, and using injected drugs. Alcohol use, pain in the liver, migraine, and reported history of hepatitis were markedly associated with hepatitis C. The prison population tested positive for anti-HCV at a higher rate than the non-prison population.O objetivo do presente trabalho foi comparar a prevalência, os genótipos e fatores de risco da hepatite C entre a população em geral e os presos na cidade de Colatina, Espírito Santo, Brasil.
Interdisciplinary bachelor degrees in federal university of bahia: a review of the project implementation
We discuss conceptual framework, operational perspective and political-institutional features of the Interdisciplinary Bachelor Degree (BI) implementation in the Federal University of Bahia, between 2009 and 2012, as compared to existing university education models which, until then, only offered disciplinary professional courses. We analyze narratives of key agents of the process, three UFBA teachers who performed administrative functions, and a BI student, engaged in the student movement. We have concluded that the perspective for the BI to become the first cycle at UFBA is on hold; support and resistance movements have accompanied it, suggesting large institutional challenges. However, the experience has led to a vigorous revision of rules and regulations naturalized for a long time and enabled reflections on the traditional concept of university education in Brazil

DNA-Based Authentication of Botanicals and Plant-Derived Dietary Supplements: Where Have We Been and Where Are We Going?
Herbal medicines and botanicals have long been used as sole or additional medical aids worldwide. Currently, billions of dollars are spent on botanicals and related products, but minimal regulation exists regarding their purity, integrity, and efficacy. Cases of adulteration and contamination have led to severe illness and even death in some cases. Identifying the plant material in botanicals and phytomedicines using organoleptic means or through microscopic observation of plant parts is not trivial, and plants are often misidentified. Recently, DNA-based methods have been applied to these products because DNA is not changed by growth conditions unlike the chemical constituents of many active pharmaceutical agents. In recent years, DNA barcoding methods, which are used to identify species diversity in the Tree of Life, have been also applied to botanicals and plant-derived dietary supplements. In this review, we recount the history of DNA-based methods for identification of botanicals and discuss some of the difficulties in defining a specific bar code or codes to use. In addition, we describe how next generation sequencing technologies have enabled new techniques that can be applied to identifying these products with greater authority and resolution. Lastly, we present case histories where dietary supplements, decoctions, and other products have been shown to contain materials other than the main ingredient stipulated on the label. We conclude that there is a fundamental need for greater quality control in this industry, which if not self-imposed, that may result from legislation
If interdisciplinarity was a necessary condition for the construction of the psychoanalytical field, transdisciplinarity provide evidence to justify the relevance of psychoanalysis as a mean of knowledge production at the university. By building bridges across different fields, while making other brands cross that theoretical edifice and be modified, Freud transmitted a true experience, instituting a new episteme. This article introduces the context of development of Freud's work and presents the hypothesis that there is an anticipation of interdisciplinarity in Freud. Then, it discusses the terms interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity. Finally, it argues that the status of psychoanalysis corresponds more to transdisciplinary practice than the simple dialogue or interdisciplinary integration.
Technical feasibility of the use of concrete with recycled construction and demolition residues as aggregates
Despite the improvement of construction techniques and technological innovation, construction still faces many problems. One current major issue is what will become of construction as the natural resources are getting scarce. In fact, the indiscriminate exploitation of such resources has caused serious environmental problems, as well as the generation of much construction waste in urban areas. One of the alternatives to reduce the accumulation of such waste is recycling. This paper presents results of a research study that aimed to assess the technical feasibility of using construction and demolition waste for producing concrete recycled aggregates. A comparative study of concrete using natural and recycled aggregates was made. The results indicate that recycled aggregates can improve some concrete properties, such as compressive strength and durability, measured by the concrete service life prediction. The economical feasibility was also considered, although superficially, through the price comparison between natural and recycled aggregates
Leptin and advanced glycation end products receptor (RAGE) in tuberculosis patients
Introduction The pathogenesis of consumptive syndrome of tuberculosis (TB) is largely unknown. Leptin concentrations may be high because of the host’s inflammatory response, contributing to weight loss in patients with TB. The receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) is also associated with weight loss in patients with TB and is related to enhanced mortality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between leptin and AGE/RAGE. Methods Case-control study. Leptin, AGE (carboxymethyl lysine, CML) and soluble RAGE (sRAGE) were measured from blood samples by ELISA. Results We included in the study 34 patients with TB and 34 controls. We found an inverse correlation between serum leptin levels and sRAGE, only in cases (r = -0.609, p < 0.0001). sRAGE levels were lower in patients with TB who died as compared with patients who survive (21.90 ± 4.24 pg/mL vs 66.14 ± 29.49 pg/mL; p = 0.045). Leptin levels were higher in patients with TB who died as compared with patients who survive (14.11 [7.48–14.11] ng/mL vs 3.08 [0.54–6.34] ng/mL; p = 0.028). Conclusions We identified lower sRAGE levels and higher leptin levels in patients with TB who died as compared with patients who survive. In addition, an inverse and significant correlation between serum leptin and sRAGE levels was demonstrated. Future studies, with a larger sample size and in different settings, including not only hospitalized patients, are needed to confirm these findings
Association of Dental Anxiety with Psychosocial Characteristics among Children Aged 7-13 Years
Objective: To identify psychosocial characteristics associated with dental anxiety in children aged 7-13 years in the dental setting. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with children aged 7-13 years attended at the Dentistry School of Pelotas, Brazil. Data collection was based on a questionnaire administered to mothers and children, and the behavior of children during dental treatment was evaluated using the Frankl’ Scale. Data were analyzed using Chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests in order to analyze the association between independent variables and dental anxiety. The effect of variables on the outcome was assessed by the Poisson regression model with robust variance (Prevalence Ratio; 95% Confidence interval). Results: A total of 187 children were included. Dental anxiety prevalence was 40.11%. After adjustments, younger children (p=0.046), only child (p=0.019), and children with negative previous dental experience (p=0.046) showed higher dental anxiety prevalence. Children with uncooperative behavior in previous (p=0.033) and current (p≤0.001) dental appointments showed higher dental anxiety prevalence. Conclusion: In this sample of children treated at a dentistry school, a report of dental anxiety was associated with age, birth order, previous dental experience and behavior in dental settings
