    What characteristics of secondary mathematics professional development courses do teachers find effective?

    In this study, I investigate what characteristics mathematics teachers find effective in their professional development.The literature review reveals the significance of teacher professional development and its impact on quality of teaching and student experience. It also describes and offers a critique of an emerging body of knowledge of professional development for mathematics teachers.I explore and analyse the experience of teacher participants, each engaged in one of three professional development courses for teachers of mathematics. The courses were managed by my employers, Mathematics in Education and Industry (ME). Two were led by my colleagues and one was led by myself. Three forms of data collection were carried out: a paper questionnaire of demographic and background details of the teacher participants; a paper survey of their views of effective (and ineffective) professional development activities experienced during the above courses; and, semi-structured interviews with small focus groups of self-selecting participants.A classification system is developed to categorise and assess teacher participants’ qualitative responses. This system permits themes to emerge, to be identified and then analysed. The data collection reveals that the individuals forming the community of mathematics teachers on these courses varied widely in terms of professional background and career stage.Significantly, the findings suggest that a number of aspects contribute to the effectiveness of professional development for mathematics teachers, as identified by the teachers themselves. Furthermore, some groupings of teacher participants on professional development courses present commonalities in terms of which aspects are most significant.Finally, the thesis presents a number of implications for future practice in the design and delivery of professional development for mathematics teachers, and suggests a number of possible areas for further research in the future

    Category Fluency Test: Normative Data for English- and Spanish-Speaking Elderly

    Category fluency tasks are an important component of neuropsychological assessment, especially when evaluating for dementia syndromes. The growth in the number of Spanish-speaking elderly in the United States has increased the need for appropriate neuropsychological measures and normative data for this population. This study provides norms for English and Spanish speakers, over the age of 50, on 3 frequently used measures of category fluency: animals, vegetables, and fruits. In addition, it examines the impact of age, education, gender, language, and depressed mood on total fluency scores and on scores on each of these fluency measures. A sample of 702 cognitively intact elderly, 424 English speakers, and 278 Spanish speakers, participated in the study. Normative data are provided stratified by language, age, education, and gender. Results evidence that regardless of the primary language of the examinee, age, education, and gender are the strongest predictors of total category fluency scores, with gender being the best predictor of performance after adjusting for age and education. English and Spanish speakers obtained similar scores on animal and fruit fluency, but English speakers generated more vegetable exemplars than Spanish speakers. Results also indicate that different fluency measures are affected by various factors to different degrees. (JINS, 2000, 6, 760–769.

    Aerobic Function and Muscle Deoxygenation Dynamics during Ramp Exercise in Children

    PURPOSE:To characterise changes in deoxyhemoglobin ([HHb]) response dynamics in boys and girls during ramp incremental exercise to investigate whether the reduced peak oxygen uptake (peakV˙O2) in girls is associated with a poorer matching of muscle O2 delivery to muscle O2 utilisation, as evidenced by a more rapid increase in [HHb].METHODS:52 children (31 boys, 9.9 ± 0.6 years, 1.38 ± 0.07 m, 31.70 ± 5.78 kg) completed ramp incremental exercise on a cycle ergometer during which pulmonary gas exchange and muscle oxygenation parameters were measured.RESULTS:When muscle [HHb] was expressed against absolute work rate and V˙O2, girls had an earlier change in [HHb] as evidenced by the lower c/d parameter (Girls: 54 ± 20 W vs Boys: 67 ± 19 W, P=0.023; Girls: 0.82 ± 0.28 L·min vs. Boys: 0.95 ± 0.19 L·min, P=0.055) and plateau (Girls: 85 ± 12 W vs. Boys: 99 ± 18 W, P=0.031; Girls: 1.02 ± 0.25 L·min vs. Boys: 1.22 ± 0.28 L·min, P=0.014). However, when expressed against relative work-rate or V˙O2, there were no sex differences in [HHb] response dynamics (all P>0.20). Significant correlations were observed between absolute and fat-free mass normalised peak V˙O2 and the HHb c/d and plateau parameters when expressed against absolute work-rate or V˙O2. Furthermore, when entered into a multiple regression model, the [HHb] plateau against absolute V˙O2 contributed 12% of the variance in peak V˙O2 after adjusting for fat-free mass, gas exchange threshold, and body fatness (model R =0.81, P<0.001).CONCLUSION:The sex-difference in peak V˙O2 in 9-10 year old children is, in part, related to sex-specific changes in muscle O2 extraction dynamics during incremental exercise

    Fructose transport-deficient Staphylococcus aureus reveals important role of epithelial glucose transporters in limiting sugar-driven bacterial growth in airway surface liquid.

    Hyperglycaemia as a result of diabetes mellitus or acute illness is associated with increased susceptibility to respiratory infection with Staphylococcus aureus. Hyperglycaemia increases the concentration of glucose in airway surface liquid (ASL) and promotes the growth of S. aureus in vitro and in vivo. Whether elevation of other sugars in the blood, such as fructose, also results in increased concentrations in ASL is unknown and whether sugars in ASL are directly utilised by S. aureus for growth has not been investigated. We obtained mutant S. aureus JE2 strains with transposon disrupted sugar transport genes. NE768(fruA) exhibited restricted growth in 10 mM fructose. In H441 airway epithelial-bacterial co-culture, elevation of basolateral sugar concentration (5-20 mM) increased the apical growth of JE2. However, sugar-induced growth of NE768(fruA) was significantly less when basolateral fructose rather than glucose was elevated. This is the first experimental evidence to show that S. aureus directly utilises sugars present in the ASL for growth. Interestingly, JE2 growth was promoted less by glucose than fructose. Net transepithelial flux of D-glucose was lower than D-fructose. However, uptake of D-glucose was higher than D-fructose across both apical and basolateral membranes consistent with the presence of GLUT1/10 in the airway epithelium. Therefore, we propose that the preferential uptake of glucose (compared to fructose) limits its accumulation in ASL. Pre-treatment with metformin increased transepithelial resistance and reduced the sugar-dependent growth of S. aureus. Thus, epithelial paracellular permeability and glucose transport mechanisms are vital to maintain low glucose concentration in ASL and limit bacterial nutrient sources as a defence against infection

    Background Diabetes is a risk factor for respiratory infection, and hyperglycaemia is associated with increased glucose in airway surface liquid and risk of Staphylococcus aureus infection. Objectives To investigate whether elevation of basolateral/blood glucose concentration promotes airway Staphylococcus aureus growth and whether pretreatment with the antidiabetic drug metformin affects this relationship. Methods Human airway epithelial cells grown at air–liquid interface (±18 h pre-treatment, 30 μM–1 mM metformin) were inoculated with 5×105 colony-forming units (CFU)/cm2 S aureus 8325-4 or JE2 or Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA01 on the apical surface and incubated for 7 h. Wild-type C57BL/6 or db/db (leptin receptor-deficient) mice, 6–10 weeks old, were treated with intraperitoneal phosphate-buffered saline or 40 mg/kg metformin for 2 days before intranasal inoculation with 1×107 CFU S aureus. Mice were culled 24 h after infection and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid collected. Results Apical S aureus growth increased with basolateral glucose concentration in an in vitro airway epithelia–bacteria co-culture model. S aureus reduced transepithelial electrical resistance (RT) and increased paracellular glucose flux. Metformin inhibited the glucose-induced growth of S aureus, increased RT and decreased glucose flux. Diabetic (db/db) mice infected with S aureus exhibited a higher bacterial load in their airways than control mice after 2 days and metformin treatment reversed this effect. Metformin did not decrease blood glucose but reduced paracellular flux across ex vivo murine tracheas. Conclusions Hyperglycaemia promotes respiratory S aureus infection, and metformin modifies glucose flux across the airway epithelium to limit hyperglycaemia-induced bacterial growth. Metformin might, therefore, be of additional benefit in the prevention and treatment of respiratory infection

    Production of a computer based lesson : teaching employees how to use an air data tester

    The Technical Operations branch of Air Canada recently purchased three new Air Data Testers for use in checking and calibrating certain systems and components on the company's aircraft. These testers are of a new generation, operating in a manner significantly different from the ones that they replace. A computer based lesson was developed in order to provide Maintenance personnel quality and timely training on how to operate the new tester. Dick and Carey's (1985) instructional design model was used to guide the design of the lesson. Using company equipment, and Wicat Systems, Inc.'s WISE authoring system, a portion of the lesson was produced. Three types of people participated in a formative evaluation of the lesson. An instructional design expert evaluated the lesson's design and found it to be acceptable. A subject matter expert evaluated the programmed portion of the lesson for technical accuracy. A few minor changes were required. Eight members of the target population worked through the lesson's programmed portion. Oral and written comments were positive. Some technical errors were identified. There was a statistically significant improvement between the pre-test (35%) and post-test (93%) mean scores, indicating that the students learned from the program

    Changing Politics: Towards a New Democracy

    In October 2014 the PSA joint-funded a Consultation event ‘Changing Politics – Towards a New Democracy’ with St. George’s House. The Chair of the PSA, Professor Matthew Flinders, chaired the event which brought together participants from a range of fields (including academics, think tankers and practitioners in several policy areas). Today, St. George’s House has published a report which highlights the main themes emerging from the discussion as well as some conclusions and recommendations. It identifies several areas where changes are urgently needed to reinvigorate democracy. The report concludes that to fully succeed in addressing the growth of political apathy and disengagement, parties and leaders must forget their differences and join citizens, academics, charities and others to address this problem with all available energy and resources

    A novel fluorescent sensor protein for detecting changes in airway surface liquid glucose concentration.

    Both lung disease and elevation of blood glucose are associated with increased glucose concentration (from 0.4 to ~4.0 mM) in the airway surface liquid (ASL). This perturbation of ASL glucose makes the airway more susceptible to infection by respiratory pathogens. ASL is minute (~1 μl/cm(2)) and the measurement of glucose concentration in the small volume ASL is extremely difficult. Therefore, we sought to develop a fluorescent biosensor with sufficient sensitivity to determine glucose concentrations in ASL in situ. We coupled a range of environmentally sensitive fluorophores to mutated forms of a glucose/galactose-binding protein (GBP) including H152C and H152C/A213R and determined their equilibrium binding properties. Of these, GBP H152C/A213R-BADAN (Kd 0.86 ± 0.01 mM, Fmax/F0 3.6) was optimal for glucose sensing and in ASL increased fluorescence when basolateral glucose concentration was raised from 1 to 20 mM. Moreover, interpolation of the data showed that the glucose concentration in ASL was increased, with results similar to that using glucose oxidase analysis. The fluorescence of GBP H152C/A213R-BADAN in native ASL from human airway epithelial cultures in situ was significantly increased over time when basolateral glucose was increased from 5 to 20 mM. Overall our data indicate that this GBP is a useful tool to monitor glucose homoeostasis in the lung

    Effects of antiplatelet therapy on stroke risk by brain imaging features of intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral small vessel diseases: subgroup analyses of the RESTART randomised, open-label trial

    Background Findings from the RESTART trial suggest that starting antiplatelet therapy might reduce the risk of recurrent symptomatic intracerebral haemorrhage compared with avoiding antiplatelet therapy. Brain imaging features of intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral small vessel diseases (such as cerebral microbleeds) are associated with greater risks of recurrent intracerebral haemorrhage.
