    This report discusses research in three areas of organic synthesis: The synthesis of potential insecticides; the reinvestigation of the reaction of hexamethylphosphoramide with ketoximes; and the regioselective fluoroalkoxylation and polyfluoroalkoxylation of activated dihalobenzenes and dihaloheterocycles. In Part I, a series of N-(4-heteroaryloxybenzoyl)-N\u27-(2, 3-dichlorobenzoyl) hydrazines are synthesized, and attempts at cyclic dehydration to the corresponding 2, 5-disubstituted-1, 3, 4-oxadiazoles are discussed. In Part II, the synthesis of N, N-dimethyl-N\u27-aryl amidines by the reaction of aryl alkyl and diaryl ketoximes with HMPA is discussed. In Part III, a series of activated dihalobenzenes and dihaloheterocycles are reacted with sodium trifluoroethoxide to study the possibility of regioselective fluoroalkoxylation and polyfluoroalkoxylation of these activated substances

    Using a quasi-experimental one-group, pretest–posttest design with non-random convenience sampling, the researchers assessed 61 advanced standing MSW students who matriculated at a rural intermountain Northwest school of social work. Changes in students\u27 knowledge and attitudes toward lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people were measured using subscales of the LGB-KASH scale and include knowledge of LGB history, religious conflict, internalized affirmation of LGB people and issues, hatred and violence toward LGB people, and knowledge and attitudes toward extension and exclusion of civil rights for LGB people. Completion of required, highly experiential bridge course content regarding LGB history and experience appears to be significant in reducing religious conflict, increasing knowledge of LGB issues, and enhancing internalized affirmation of LGB individuals

    Amorphous and Polycrystalline Photoconductors for Direct Conversion Flat Panel X-Ray Image Sensors

    In the last ten to fifteen years there has been much research in using amorphous and polycrystalline semiconductors as x-ray photoconductors in various x-ray image sensor applications, most notably in flat panel x-ray imagers (FPXIs). We first outline the essential requirements for an ideal large area photoconductor for use in a FPXI, and discuss how some of the current amorphous and polycrystalline semiconductors fulfill these requirements. At present, only stabilized amorphous selenium (doped and alloyed a-Se) has been commercialized, and FPXIs based on a-Se are particularly suitable for mammography, operating at the ideal limit of high detective quantum efficiency (DQE). Further, these FPXIs can also be used in real-time, and have already been used in such applications as tomosynthesis. We discuss some of the important attributes of amorphous and polycrystalline x-ray photoconductors such as their large area deposition ability, charge collection efficiency, x-ray sensitivity, DQE, modulation transfer function (MTF) and the importance of the dark current. We show the importance of charge trapping in limiting not only the sensitivity but also the resolution of these detectors. Limitations on the maximum acceptable dark current and the corresponding charge collection efficiency jointly impose a practical constraint that many photoconductors fail to satisfy. We discuss the case of a-Se in which the dark current was brought down by three orders of magnitude by the use of special blocking layers to satisfy the dark current constraint. There are also a number of polycrystalline photoconductors, HgI2 and PbO being good examples, that show potential for commercialization in the same way that multilayer stabilized a-Se x-ray photoconductors were developed for commercial applications. We highlight the unique nature of avalanche multiplication in a-Se and how it has led to the development of the commercial HARP video-tube. An all solid state version of the HARP has been recently demonstrated with excellent avalanche gains; the latter is expected to lead to a number of novel imaging device applications that would be quantum noise limited. While passive pixel sensors use one TFT (thin film transistor) as a switch at the pixel, active pixel sensors (APSs) have two or more transistors and provide gain at the pixel level. The advantages of APS based x-ray imagers are also discussed with examples

    Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is associated with psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) and is a frequent diagnosis in the prodromal phases of psychosis. We investigated whether psychopathological factors could discriminate which subjects with SAD are more likely to develop PLEs. A sample of 128 young adults with SAD was split into two subsamples according to the presence of clinically relevant PLEs. Correlations between PLEs and other psychopathological markers were explored. The SAD with PLEs group showed higher level of anxiety, depression, and intolerance of uncertainty (IU) compared with the SAD without PLEs group. A limitation of this study is that the cross-sectional design precluded the analysis of causality. In our sample, the presence of PLEs is related to higher levels of depression, anxiety, and IU. The current findings are consistent with hypotheses suggesting that cognitive disturbances, together with social anxiety, may result in PLEs

    Speech production and disorganization in schizotypy: Investigating the role of cognitive and affective systems

    Diminished productivity and elevated disorganization have been detected in the speech of individuals with schizotypy. However, the underlying mechanisms for these disruptions are not well understood. Separate lines of research suggest potential contributions from cognitive and affective systems. In this study, disorganized speech and speech production were examined in speech samples generated by schizotypy (n = 47) and non-schizotypy (n = 51) groups by assessing “reactivity” (i.e., a change in experimental compared with baseline conditions) across baseline, affective, and dual-task (i.e., cognitive) conditions. Relationships with social functioning were also examined within each group. Three key findings emerged: 1) compared to the non-schizotypy group, those with schizotypy exhibited diminished speech production in the affective condition and affective reactivity was observed; 2) the schizotypy group displayed greater levels of disorganized speech in dual-task conditions and cognitive reactivity was observed; and 3) affective reactivity for disorganized speech was linked to worse social functioning within the schizotypy group. This study provides evidence that cognitive and affective systems are uniquely involved in separate characteristics of speech in schizotypy. At this stage, cognitive systems appear to have a specific role in the organization of speech, whereas affective systems are more heavily involved in speech production. Regarding the association between affective reactivity and social functioning, previous research has demonstrated individuals highly reactive to emotional stimuli carry additional risk for conversion to psychosis. Future research identifying a subset with schizotypy who demonstrate affective reactivity could lead to a better understanding of links between schizotypy and future psychosis symptoms

    A solid-state amorphous selenium avalanche technology for low photon flux imaging applications

The technology is based on an amorphous selenium photoreceptor with a voltage-controlled avalanche multiplication gain. If this photoreceptor can provide sufficient internal gain, it will be useful for an extensive range of diagnostic imaging systems
