Power and authority in Paul’s ministry: a study in 1 Corinthians

    Get PDF
The object of study is the power and authority used by the apostle Paul in his interaction with the Corinthians as reflected in 1 Corinthians. Working definitions of the two key terms are offered. In Part One, a review was undertaken of the secondary literature related to issues of power and authority. This review was divided into three sections devoted to traditional historical-critical analyses reflecting the period from 1900 to the 1970s, social-scientific approaches and rhetorical-critical approaches, respectively. Historical-critical analyses include the works of Sohm, Harnack, Schweizer, Käsemann, Campenhausen, Dunn and Turner. The Social- scientific survey includes the works of Weber, Berger & Luckmann, Theissen, Schütz, Holmberg, Meeks and Chow. Rhetorical-critical analysis centres on Shaw, Welborn and Mitchell. Part Two comprised an exegesis of 1 Corinthians 12-14, a large, representative text from the letter, to examine how Paul exerted power and authority on the Corinthians through the text. Paul's use, in practice, of power and authority, as distinct from his own claims regarding power and authority could be observed. Care is taken to allow issues of social context and rhetoric as well as theology to influence the debate as appropriate. Paul's strategic appeal as norms to concepts such as the gospel, the common good, love and upbuilding are noted. Part Three gives brief consideration to what has been achieved in the present thesis and points to further possible research. The definitions of the two key terms are revisited to incorporate material uncovered in the course of the study

The deformation and stability of an elastic cell in a uniform flow

The deformation and stability of a two-dimensional inextensible elastic cell in an inviscid uniform stream are investigated using a conformal mapping method. At low flow speeds equilibrium solutions are obtained using an asymptotic expansion, and the sequence of critical dimensionless pressures identified by Flaherty et al. (1972) for a circular cell exposed to a uniform transmural pressure is shown to play a crucial role. Below the smallest critical pressure a circular cell in a weak flow deforms into a near-elliptical shape with its major axis perpendicular to the flow, and above this critical pressure its major axis is aligned with the flow. At each subsequent critical pressure the bifurcations produce in alternating sequence cells with either one or two axes of symmetry. In the former case cells with left-right symmetry and cells with top-bottom symmetry are found. Equilibria for general flow speeds are calculated numerically, and their linear stability is analysed. Cells with two degrees of rotational symmetry whose longest chord is perpendicular to the uniform stream are found to be always stable. Other configurations are found to be stable only for certain parameter values. The nonlinear evolution of unstable cells subject to a small perturbation are computed numerically, and parameter values are located for which the cell falls into one of two distinct regular motions, either flipping over in alternating directions or bulging out to the side, while being intermittently propelled downstream with the flow

The Deformation of an Elastic Cell in an Inviscid Stream

In this thesis we study the deformation of an elastic cell in an inviscid fluid flow. We formulate the system of equations which governs the unsteady interaction between a thin-walled two-dimensional elastic cell and an inviscid fluid flow, allowing for fluids both in the exterior and interior of the cell. We present a conformal mapping method to simplify the exterior flow, and discuss numerical methods to evaluate the interior flow. We focus on two particular flow configurations: a massless cell in a uniform stream, and a massive cell in a stream with circulation where the weight of the cell is balanced by the lift generated by the flow. We present asymptotic methods to obtain equilibria at low flow speeds, and use numerical methods to perform a detailed analysis of the solution space. For the massless cell we also analyse the linear stability of the equilibria, and study the subsequent nonlinear evolution of the unsteady cells. We also extend the elastic cell formulation to allow for a fixed angle corner and an inextensible internal support, providing a simple model of an inflatable aerofoil. We present numerical methods based on a conformal mapping and a boundary integral equation which we use to analyse the deformed cell shapes in an inviscid flow, and obtain the parameter values for which the cell takes an aerodynamic shape. We compute the viscous flow past these deformed aerofoils and assess their aerodynamic viability

How do I sound to me? Perceived changes in communication in Parkinson's disease

    Get PDF
Objective: To examine self and carer perceived changes in communication associated with Parkinson's disease and relate these to speech intelligibility, gender, age and other disease measures. Design: Cross-sectional survey of a hospital- and community-based sample of 176 people with Parkinson's disease and their carers using a questionnaire based on semantic differential techniques. Participants: One hundred and four people with Parkinson's disease with no history of communication difficulties prior to onset of their Parkinson's disease and 45 primary carers who returned completed questionnaires. Main outcome measures: Differences in ratings for `before' the onset of Parkinson's disease versus present status. Results: There was a strong perception of negative impact on communication between `before' and `now', irrespective of age and gender and largely independent of disease severity and duration, intelligibility and cognitive status. Activities of daily living (assessed by Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) II) and depression rating scale scores had the strongest association with change (adjusted R 2 0.27). There was a significant correlation between the rank order of perceived change in features examined in people with Parkinson's disease versus their carers, though in general carers rated change as having less impact. Conclusions: Parkinson's disease exercises a strong influence on communication even before apparent alterations to intelligibility or motor status

Assessment of intelligibility in dysarthria: development of a Maltese word and phrase list

    Get PDF
This paper describes the development of the Maltese Intelligibility Lists (MIL) for the assessment of word and phrase intelligibility in dysarthria. Two main tools were employed: the Frenchay Dysarthria Assessment-2 (FDA), and the Maltese Language Resource Server (MLRS). Three main criteria served as the basis for the construction of the word and phrase lists: frequency of occurrence of Maltese phonemes, word frequency and an analysis of syllable types and structures. The most common 500 words in the MLRS corpus (Korpus Malti v. 3) were broadly transcribed and an analysis of different types of syllables and their frequency of occurrence was carried out. Based on this analysis, the relevant proportion of different syllable types required for the word and phrase lists for Maltese was calculated in line with the number of items present in the FDA-2. With regards to phoneme frequency, the words chosen demonstrate a similar short-vowel and consonant distribution as reported in a previous large-scale study. The MIL consists of 116 words and 50 phrases which are representative of Standard Maltese and can be used in the clinic to assess speech intelligibility in Maltese individuals with dysarthria
