Indexing dialysis dose for gender, body size and physical activity: Impact on survival
Current practice basing dialysis dose on urea distribution volume (V) has been questioned. We explored the impact on survival of scaling dialysis dose (Kt) to parameters reflective of metabolic activity. In a multicentre prospective cohort study of 1500 patients on thrice-weekly haemodialysis, body surface area (BSA) and resting energy expenditure (REE) were estimated using validated equations and physical activity by the Recent Physical Activity Questionnaire. Total energy expenditure (TEE) was estimated from REE and physical activity data. Kt was calculated from delivered (single-pool Kt/V)*Watson V. Kt/BSA, Kt/ REE and Kt/TEE were then calculated at baseline and 6 monthly during follow-up for 2 years. In adjusted Cox models Kt/TEE, Kt/BSA, Kt/REE, in that order, had lower hazard ratios for death than single-pool Kt/V. On the basis of adjusted survival differences, putative minimum target doses were estimated for Kt/BSA as 27119 ml/m 2 and Kt/TEE as 25.79 ml/ kcal. We identified spKt/V values equivalent to these estimated targets, ranging from 1.4 to 1.8 in patient groups based on gender, body size and physical activity. For sedentary patients, the minimum target dose was 1.4 for large males, 1.5 for small males and 1.7 for women. For active patients the target was 1.8 irrespective of gender and body-weight. Patients achieving these individualised minimum targets had greater adjusted two-year survival compared to those achieving conventional minimum targets. Metabolic activity related parameters, such as Kt/TEE and Kt/BSA, may have a clinically important role in scaling haemodialysis dose. Using such parameters or their spKt/V equivalents to adjust minimum target doses based on gender, body size and habitual physical activity may have a positive impact on survival.Peer reviewe
Globular Cluster Populations in Four Early-Type Poststarburst Galaxies
We present a study of the globular cluster systems of four early-type
poststarburst galaxies using deep g and I-band images from the ACS camera
aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). All the galaxies feature shells
distributed around their main bodies and are thus likely merger remnants. The
color distribution of the globular clusters in all four galaxies shows a broad
peak centered on g-I ~ 1.4, while PGC 6240 and PGC 42871 show a significant
number of globular clusters with g-I ~ 1.0. The latter globular clusters are
interpreted as being of age ~ 500 Myr and likely having been formed in the
merger. The color of the redder peak is consistent with that expected for an
old metal-poor population that is very commonly found around normal galaxies.
However, all galaxies except PGC 10922 contain several globular clusters that
are significantly brighter than the maximum luminosity expected of a single old
metal-poor population. To test for multiple-age populations of overlapping g-I
color, we model the luminosity functions of the globular clusters as composites
of an old metal-poor subpopulation with a range of plausible specific
frequencies and an intermediate-age subpopulation of solar metallicity. We find
that three of the four sample galaxies show evidence for the presence of an
intermediate-age (~ 1 Gyr) globular cluster population, in addition to the old
metal-poor GC population seen in normal early-type galaxies. None of the
galaxies show a significant population of clusters consistent with an old,
metal-rich red cluster population that is typically seen in early-type

Inferring the Provenance of an Alien Species with DNA Barcodes: The Neotropical Butterfly Dryas iulia in Thailand
The Neotropical butterfly Dryas iulia has been collected from several locations in Thailand and Malaysia since 2007, and has been observed breeding in the wild, using introduced Passiflora foetida as a larval host plant. The butterfly is bred by a butterfly house in Phuket, Thailand, for release at weddings and Buddhist ceremonies, and we hypothesized that this butterfly house was the source of wild, Thai individuals. We compared wing patterns and COI barcodes from two, wild Thai populations with individuals obtained from this butterfly house. All Thai individuals resemble the subspecies D. iulia modesta, and barcodes from wild and captive Thai specimens were identical. This unique, Thai barcode was not found in any of the 30 specimens sampled from the wild in the species\u27 native range, but is most similar to specimens from Costa Rica, where many exporting butterfly farms are located. These data implicate the butterfly house as the source of Thailand\u27s wild D. iulia populations, which are currently so widespread that eradication efforts are unlikely to be successful
Serendipitous Geodesy from Bennu's Short-Lived Moonlets
The Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx; or OREx) spacecraft arrived at its target, near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu, on December 3, 2018. The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft has since collected a wealth of scientific information in order to select a suitable site for sampling. Shortly after insertion into orbit on December 31, 2018, particles were identified in starfield images taken by the navigation camera (NavCam 1). Several groups within the OSlRlS-REx team analyzed the particle data in an effort to better understand this newfound activity of Bennu and to investigate the potential sensitivity of the particles to Bennu's geophysical parameters. A number of particles were identified through automatic and manual methods in multiple images, which could be turned into short sequences of optical tracking observations. Here, we discuss the precision orbit determination (OD) effort focused on these particles at NASA GSFC, which involved members of the Independent Navigation Team (INT) in particular. The particle data are combined with other OSIRIS-REx tracking data (radiometric from OSN and optical landmark data) using the NASA GSFC GEODYN orbit determination and geodetic parameter estimation software. We present the results of our study, particularly those pertaining to the gravity field of Bennu. We describe the force modeling improvements made to GEODYN specifically for this work, e.g., with a raytracing-based modeling of solar radiation pressure. The short-lived, low-flying moonlets enable us to determine a gravity field model up to a relatively high degree and order: at least degree 6 without constraints, and up to degree 10 when applying Kaula-like regularization. We can backward- and forward-integrate the trajectory of these particles to the ejection and landing sites on Bennu. We assess the recovered field by its impact on the OSIRIS-REx trajectory reconstruction and prediction quality in the various mission phases (e.g., Orbital A, Detailed Survey, and Orbital B)
Practice Guideline: Cervical and Ocular Vestibular Evokedmyogenic Potential Testing: Report of the Guideline Development Dissemination and Implementation Subcommittee of the American Academy of Neurology
Objective: To systematically review the evidence and make recommendations with regard to diagnostic utility of cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMP and oVEMP, respectively). Four questions were asked: Does cVEMP accurately identify superior canal dehiscence syndrome (SCDS)? Does oVEMP accurately identify SCDS? For suspected vestibular symptoms, does cVEMP/oVEMP accurately identify vestibular dysfunction related to the saccule/ utricle? For vestibular symptoms, does cVEMP/oVEMP accurately and substantively aid diagnosis of any specific vestibular disorder besides SCDS? Methods: The guideline panel identified and classified relevant published studies (January 1980- December 2016) according to the 2004 American Academy of Neurology process. Results and Recommendations: Level C positive: Clinicians may use cVEMP stimulus threshold values to distinguish SCDS from controls (2 Class III studies) (sensitivity 86%-91%, specificity 90%-96%). Corrected cVEMP amplitude may be used to distinguish SCDS from controls (2 Class III studies) (sensitivity 100%, specificity 93%). Clinicians may use oVEMP amplitude to distinguish SCDS from normal controls (3 Class III studies) (sensitivity 77%-100%, specificity 98%-100%). oVEMP threshold may be used to aid in distinguishing SCDS from controls (3 Class III studies) (sensitivity 70%-100%, specificity 77%-100%). A Self-Consistent Approach to Neutral-Current Processes in Supernova Cores
The problem of neutral-current processes (neutrino scattering, pair emission,
pair absorption, axion emission, \etc) in a nuclear medium can be separated
into an expression representing the phase space of the weakly interacting
probe, and a set of dynamic structure functions of the medium. For a
non-relativistic medium we reduce the description to two structure functions
S_A(\o) and S_V(\o) of the energy transfer, representing the axial-vector
and vector interactions. is well determined by the single-nucleon
approximation while may be dominated by multiply interacting nucleons.
Unless the shape of S_A(\o) changes dramatically at high densities,
scattering processes always dominate over pair processes for neutrino transport
or the emission of right-handed states. Because the emission of right-handed
neutrinos and axions is controlled by the same medium response functions, a
consistent constraint on their properties from consideration of supernova
cooling should use the same structure functions for both neutrino transport and

Gemini/GMOS Imaging of Globular Cluster Systems in Five Early-type Galaxies
This paper presents deep high quality photometry of globular cluster (GC)
systems belonging to five early-type galaxies covering a range of mass and
environment. Photometric data were obtained with the Gemini North and Gemini
South telescopes in the filter passbands g', r', and i'. The combination of
these filters with good seeing conditions allows an excellent separation
between GC candidates and unresolved field objects. Bimodal GC colour
distributions are found in all five galaxies. Most of the GC systems appear
bimodal even in the (g' -r') vs (r' -i') plane. A population of
resolved/marginally resolved GC and Ultra Compact Dwarf candidates was found in
all the galaxies. A search for the so-called "blue tilt" in the
colour-magnitude diagrams reveals that NGC 4649 clearly shows that phenomenon
although no conclusive evidence was found for the other galaxies in the sample.
This "blue tilt" translates into a mass-metallicity relation given by Z \propto
M^0.28\pm0.03 . This dependence was found using a new empirical (g' -i') vs
[Z/H] relation which relies on an homogeneous sample of GC colours and
metallicities. This paper also explores the radial trends in both colour and
surface density for the blue (metal-poor) and red (metal-rich) GC
subpopulations. As usual, the red GCs show a steeper radial distribution than
the blue ones. Evidence of galactocentric colour gradients is found in some of
the GC systems, being more significant for the two S0 galaxies in the sample.
Red GC subpopulations show similar colours and gradients to the galaxy halo
stars in their inner region. A GC mean colour-galaxy luminosity relation,
consistent with [Z/H] \propto L_B ^0.26\pm0.08, is present for the red GCs. An
estimate of the total GC populations and specific frequency SN values is

Nuclear Shell Model Calculations of Neutralino-Nucleus Cross Sections for Silicon 29 and Germanium 73
We present the results of detailed nuclear shell model calculations of the
spin-dependent elastic cross section for neutralinos scattering from \si29 and
\ge73. The calculations were performed in large model spaces which adequately
describe the configuration mixing in these two nuclei. As tests of the computed
nuclear wave functions, we have calculated several nuclear observables and
compared them with the measured values and found good agreement. In the limit
of zero momentum transfer, we find scattering matrix elements in agreement with
previous estimates for \si29 but significantly different than previous work for
\ge73. A modest quenching, in accord with shell model studies of other heavy
nuclei, has been included to bring agreement between the measured and
calculated values of the magnetic moment for \ge73. Even with this quenching,
the calculated scattering rate is roughly a factor of 2 higher than the best
previous estimates; without quenching, the rate is a factor of 4 higher. This
implies a higher sensitivity for germanium dark matter detectors. We also
investigate the role of finite momentum transfer upon the scattering response
for both nuclei and find that this can significantly change the expected rates.
We close with a brief discussion of the effects of some of the non-nuclear

Dynamical Constraints on the Formation of NGC 4472 and Its Globular Clusters
We present new radial velocities for 87 globular clusters around the
elliptical galaxy NGC 4472, and combine these with our previously published
data to create a data set of velocities for 144 globular clusters around NGC
4472. We utilize this data set to analyze the kinematics of the NGC 4472
globular cluster system. The new data confirms our previous discovery that the
metal-poor clusters have significantly higher velocity dispersion than the
metal-rich clusters in NGC 4472. We also find very little or no rotation in the
more spatially concentrated metal-rich population, with a resulting upper limit
for this population of (v/sigma)_{proj} < 0.34 at a 99% confidence level. The
very small angular momentum in the metal-rich population requires efficient
angular momentum transport during the formation of this population which is
spatially concentrated and chemically enriched. Such angular momentum transfer
can be provided by galaxy mergers, but has not been achieved in other extant
models of elliptical galaxy formation that include dark matter halos. We also
calculate the velocity dispersion as a function of radius, and show that it is
consistent with roughly isotropic orbits for the clusters and the mass
distribution of NGC 4472 inferred from X-ray observations of the hot gas around
