    Accuracy and Credal Imprecision

    Many have claimed that epistemic rationality sometimes requires us to have imprecise credal states (i.e. credal states representable only by sets of credence functions) rather than precise ones (i.e. credal states representable by single credence functions). Some writers have recently argued that this claim conflicts with accuracy-centered epistemology, i.e., the project of justifying epistemic norms by appealing solely to the overall accuracy of the doxastic states they recommend. But these arguments are far from decisive. In this essay, we prove some new results, which show that there is little hope for reconciling the rationality of credal imprecision with accuracy-centered epistemology

    Graphene made easy: high quality, large-area samples

    We show that by using an original method, bulk graphite can be bonded onto borosilicate glass or potentially any insulating substrate with ionic conductivity and then cleaved off to leave single or few layer graphene on the substrate, identified optically and with Raman spectroscopy. This simple, inexpensive and fast method leads to the preparation of large area graphene and single or few-layer films of layered materials in general. We have prepared mm size few-layer graphene samples and also measured I-V characteristics in a FET.     Orientation‐dependent phase modulation in InGaAs/GaAs multiquantum well waveguides

    The electro‐optic effect and phase modulation in In0.2 Ga0.8 As/GaAs multiple quantum wells have been experimentally studied for the first time. The experiments were done with 1.06 and 1.15 ÎŒm photoexcitation which are, respectively, 25 and 115 meV below the electron–heavy hole excitonic resonance. Strong quadratic electro‐optic effect was observed near the excitonic edge in addition to the linear effect. These are characterized by r63 =−1.85×10−19 m/V and (R33 −R13 )=2.9×10−19 m2 /V2 . In addition, we observe a dispersion in the value of r63 .     Millimeter Observations of GRB 030329: Continued Evidence for a Two-Component Jet

    We present the results of a dedicated campaign on the afterglow of GRB 030329 with the millimeter interferometers of the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO), the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland Association (BIMA), and with the MAMBO-2 bolometer array on the IRAM 30-m telescope. These observations allow us to trace the full evolution of the afterglow of GRB 030329 at frequencies of 100 GHz and 250 GHz for the first time. The millimeter light curves exhibit two main features: a bright, constant flux density portion and a steep power-law decline. The absence of bright, short-lived millimeter emission is used to show that the GRB central engine was not actively injecting energy well after the burst. The millimeter data support a model, advocated by Berger et al., of a two-component jet-like outflow in which a narrow angle jet is responsible for the high energy emission and early optical afterglow, and a wide-angle jet carrying most of the energy is powering the radio and late optical afterglow emissionComment: Accepted to ApJ

    Multiferroic FeTe2_2O5_5Br: Alternating spin chains with frustrated interchain interactions

    A combination of density functional theory calculations, many-body model considerations, magnetization and electron spin resonance measurements shows that the multiferroic FeTe2_2O5_5Br should be described as a system of alternating antiferromagnetic S=5/2S=5/2 chains with strong Fe-O-Te-O-Fe bridges weakly coupled by two-dimensional frustrated interactions, rather than the previously reported tetramer models. The peculiar temperature dependence of the incommensurate magnetic vector can be explained in terms of interchain exchange striction being responsible for the emergent net electric polarization.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    Specialized odorant receptors in social insects that detect cuticular hydrocarbon cues and candidate pheromones.

    Eusocial insects use cuticular hydrocarbons as components of pheromones that mediate social behaviours, such as caste and nestmate recognition, and regulation of reproduction. In ants such as Harpegnathos saltator, the queen produces a pheromone which suppresses the development of workers' ovaries and if she is removed, workers can transition to a reproductive state known as gamergate. Here we functionally characterize a subfamily of odorant receptors (Ors) with a nine-exon gene structure that have undergone a massive expansion in ants and other eusocial insects. We deorphanize 22 representative members and find they can detect cuticular hydrocarbons from different ant castes, with one (HsOr263) that responds strongly to gamergate extract and a candidate queen pheromone component. After systematic testing with a diverse panel of hydrocarbons, we find that most Harpegnathos saltator Ors are narrowly tuned, suggesting that several receptors must contribute to detection and discrimination of different cuticular hydrocarbons important in mediating eusocial behaviour.Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHC) mediate the interactions between individuals in eusocial insects, but the sensory receptors for CHCs are unclear. Here the authors show that in ants such as H. saltator, the 9-exon subfamily of odorant receptors (HsOrs) responds to CHCs, and ectopic expression of HsOrs in Drosophila neurons imparts responsiveness to CHCs

    Water permeation through stratum corneum lipid bilayers from atomistic simulations

    Stratum corneum, the outermost layer of skin, consists of keratin filled rigid non-viable corneocyte cells surrounded by multilayers of lipids. The lipid layer is responsible for the barrier properties of the skin. We calculate the excess chemical potential and diffusivity of water as a function of depth in lipid bilayers with compositions representative of the stratum corneum using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. The maximum in the excess free energy of water inside the lipid bilayers is found to be twice that of water in phospholipid bilayers at the same temperature. Permeability, which decreases exponentially with the free energy barrier, is reduced by several orders of magnitude as compared to with phospholipid bilayers. The average time it takes for a water molecule to cross the bilayer is calculated by solving the Smoluchowski equation in presence of the free energy barrier. For a bilayer composed of a 2:2:1 molar ratio of ceramide NS 24:0, cholesterol and free fatty acid 24:0 at 300K, we estimate the permeability P=3.7e-9 cm/s and the average crossing time \tau_{av}=0.69 ms. The permeability is about 30 times smaller than existing experimental results on mammalian skin sections.Comment: latex, 8 pages, 6 figure

    A frequentist framework of inductive reasoning

    Reacting against the limitation of statistics to decision procedures, R. A. Fisher proposed for inductive reasoning the use of the fiducial distribution, a parameter-space distribution of epistemological probability transferred directly from limiting relative frequencies rather than computed according to the Bayes update rule. The proposal is developed as follows using the confidence measure of a scalar parameter of interest. (With the restriction to one-dimensional parameter space, a confidence measure is essentially a fiducial probability distribution free of complications involving ancillary statistics.) A betting game establishes a sense in which confidence measures are the only reliable inferential probability distributions. The equality between the probabilities encoded in a confidence measure and the coverage rates of the corresponding confidence intervals ensures that the measure's rule for assigning confidence levels to hypotheses is uniquely minimax in the game. Although a confidence measure can be computed without any prior distribution, previous knowledge can be incorporated into confidence-based reasoning. To adjust a p-value or confidence interval for prior information, the confidence measure from the observed data can be combined with one or more independent confidence measures representing previous agent opinion. (The former confidence measure may correspond to a posterior distribution with frequentist matching of coverage probabilities.) The representation of subjective knowledge in terms of confidence measures rather than prior probability distributions preserves approximate frequentist validity.Comment: major revisio
