    Cognitive and Affective Outcomes of Short-Term Service-Learning Experiences: An Exploratory Study

    This study examined the performance differences in cognitive and affective outcomes between students who completed a short-term service-learning experience and students who watched a video exemplar of the task. Performance measures were obtained via a written reflection paper that contained both cognitive and affective components. Results revealed no significant differences on cognitive outcomes and significant differences on affective outcomes. The results were consistent when academic level and overall course performance were controlled. Implications and future research directions are discussed

    NASA Composite Materials Development: Lessons Learned and Future Challenges

    Composite materials have emerged as the materials of choice for increasing the performance and reducing the weight and cost of military, general aviation, and transport aircraft and space launch vehicles. Major advancements have been made in the ability to design, fabricate, and analyze large complex aerospace structures. The recent efforts by Boeing and Airbus to incorporate composite into primary load carrying structures of large commercial transports and to certify the airworthiness of these structures is evidence of the significant advancements made in understanding and use of these materials in real world aircraft. NASA has been engaged in research on composites since the late 1960 s and has worked to address many development issues with these materials in an effort to ensure safety, improve performance, and improve affordability of air travel for the public good. This research has ranged from synthesis of advanced resin chemistries to development of mathematical analyses tools to reliably predict the response of built-up structures under combined load conditions. The lessons learned from this research are highlighted with specific examples to illustrate the problems encountered and solutions to these problems. Examples include specific technologies related to environmental effects, processing science, fabrication technologies, nondestructive inspection, damage tolerance, micromechanics, structural mechanics, and residual life prediction. The current state of the technology is reviewed and key issues requiring additional research identified. Also, grand challenges to be solved for expanded use of composites in aero structures are identified

    Structural Framework for Flight: NASA's Role in Development of Advanced Composite Materials for Aircraft and Space Structures

    This serves as a source of collated information on Composite Research over the past four decades at NASA Langley Research Center, and is a key reference for readers wishing to grasp the underlying principles and challenges associated with developing and applying advanced composite materials to new aerospace vehicle concepts. Second, it identifies the major obstacles encountered in developing and applying composites on advanced flight vehicles, as well as lessons learned in overcoming these obstacles. Third, it points out current barriers and challenges to further application of composites on future vehicles. This is extremely valuable for steering research in the future, when new breakthroughs in materials or processing science may eliminate/minimize some of the barriers that have traditionally blocked the expanded application of composite to new structural or revolutionary vehicle concepts. Finally, a review of past work and identification of future challenges will hopefully inspire new research opportunities and development of revolutionary materials and structural concepts to revolutionize future flight vehicles

    Quantum chemical study of the mechanism of action of vitamin K carboxylase in solvent

    We investigate the post-translational generation of Gla (γ-carboxy glutamic acid) from Glu (glutamic acid) by vitamin K carboxylase (VKC) in solvent. VKC is thought to convert vitamin K, in the vitamin K cycle, to an alkoxide-epoxide form, which then reacts with CO2 to generate an essential ingredient in blood coagulation, γ-carboxyglutamic acid (Gla). The generation of Gla from Glu is found to be exergenic (−15 kcal/mol) in aqueous solution with the SM6 method. We also produced the free energy profile for this model biochemical process with other solvent methods (polarizable continuum model, dielectric polarizable continuum model) and different dielectric constants.     A hetero-dimer model for concerted action of vitamin K carboxylase and vitamin K reductase in vitamin K cycle

    Vitamin K carboxylase (VKC) is believed to convert vitamin K, in the vitamin K cycle, to an alkoxide-epoxide form which then reacts with CO2 and glutamate to generate γ-carboxyglutamic acid (Gla). Subsequently, vitamin K epoxide reductase (VKOR) is thought to convert the alkoxide-epoxide to a hydroquinone form. By recycling vitamin K, the two integral-membrane proteins, VKC and VKOR, maintain vitamin K levels and sustain the blood coagulation cascade. Unfortunately, NMR or X-ray crystal structures of the two proteins have not been characterized. Thus, our understanding of the vitamin K cycle is only partial at the molecular level. In this study, based on prior biochemical experiments on VKC and VKOR, we propose a hetero-dimeric form of VKC and VKOR that may explain the efficient oxidation and reduction of vitamin K during the vitamin K cycle

    Risk analysis for smart homes and domestic robots using robust shape and physics descriptors, and complex boosting techniques

    In this paper, the notion of risk analysis within 3D scenes using vision based techniques is introduced. In particular the problem of risk estimation of indoor environments at the scene and object level is considered, with applications in domestic robots and smart homes. To this end, the proposed Risk Estimation Framework is described, which provides a quantified risk score for a given scene. This methodology is extended with the introduction of a novel robust kernel for 3D shape descriptors such as 3D HOG and SIFT3D, which aims to reduce the effects of outliers in the proposed risk recognition methodology. The Physics Behaviour Feature (PBF) is presented, which uses an object's angular velocity obtained using Newtonian physics simulation as a descriptor. Furthermore, an extension of boosting techniques for learning is suggested in the form of the novel Complex and Hyper-Complex Adaboost, which greatly increase the computation efficiency of the original technique. In order to evaluate the proposed robust descriptors an enriched version of the 3D Risk Scenes (3DRS) dataset with extra objects, scenes and meta-data was utilised. A comparative study was conducted demonstrating that the suggested approach outperforms current state-of-the-art descriptors
