The so-called dry laser cleaning governed by humidity at the nanometer scale
Illumination with single nanosecond pulses leads to the detachment of silica particles with 250nm radii from siliconsurfaces. We identify two laser-energy dependent cleaning regimes by time-of-flight particle-scattering diagnostics. For the higher energies, the ejection of particles is produced by nanoscale ablation due to the laser field enhancement at the particle-surface interface. The damage-free regime at lower energy is shown to be governed by the residual water molecules, which are inevitably trapped on the materials. We discuss the great importance that the humidity plays on the cleaning force and on the adhesion in the experiments.Peer reviewe
Functional Status After Operation for Ebstein Anomaly The Mayo Clinic Experience
ObjectivesThe objective of this study was to review the long-term functional outcome of patients with Ebstein anomaly who had cardiac operation at our institution.BackgroundEbstein anomaly is a spectrum of tricuspid valvular and right ventricular dysplasia. Many patients will require operation in an attempt to improve quality of life.MethodsFrom April 1, 1972, to January 1, 2006, 539 patients with Ebstein anomaly underwent 604 cardiac operations at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Patient records were reviewed, and all patients known to still be alive were mailed a medical questionnaire or contacted by telephone.ResultsAt the initial operation at our institution, the mean age of the patients was 24 years (range 8 days to 79 years) and 53% were female patients. Survival at 5, 10, 15, and 20 years was 94%, 90%, 86%, and 76%, respectively. Survival free of late reoperation was 86%, 74%, 62%, and 46% at 5, 10, 15, and 20 years, respectively. Surveys were returned by 285 of 448 (64%) patients known to be alive at the time of this study. Two hundred thirty-seven (83%) patients were in New York Heart Association functional class I or II, and 34% were taking no cardiac medication. One hundred three patients (36%) reported an incident of atrial fibrillation or flutter, 5 patients (2%) reported having had endocarditis, and 1 patient (<1%) reported having a stroke. There were 275 pregnancies among 82 women. The recurrence of congenital heart disease was reported in 9 of 232 (3.9%) liveborn children.ConclusionsPatients have good long-term survival and functional outcomes after undergoing surgery for Ebstein anomaly. Atrial arrhythmias are common both before and after surgery. Many patients have had one or more successful pregnancies with a low-recurrence risk of congenital heart disease
Four-shooter: a large format charge-coupled-device camera for the Hale telescope
We describe an astronomical camera for the 200-in. Hale telescope using four 800 X800 Texas Instruments CCDs in an optical arrangement that allows imaging of a contiguous 1600-pixel-square region of sky. The system employs reimaging optics to yield a scale of 0.33 arcsec per pixel, a good match to the best seeing conditions at Palomar Observatory. Modern high-efficiency coatings are used in the complex optical system to yield a throughput at peak efficiency of nearly 50% (including the losses in the telescope), corresponding to a quantum efficiency on the sky of about 30%. The system uses a fifth CCD in a spectroscopic channel, and it is possible to obtain simultaneous imaging and spectroscopic observations with the system. The camera may also be used in a scanning mode, in which the telescope tracking rate is offset, and the charge is clocked in the chips in such a manner as to keep the charge image aligned with the optical image. In this way, a survey for high-redshift quasars has been carried out over a large area of sky. The instrument has produced images for the most distant clusters of galaxies yet discovered as well as spectra of the most distant galaxies yet observed

The molecular and dusty composition of Betelgeuse's inner circumstellar environment
The study of the atmosphere of red supergiant stars in general and of
Betelgeuse (alpha Orionis) in particular is of prime importance to understand
dust formation and how mass is lost to the interstellar medium in evolved
massive stars. A molecular shell, the MOLsphere (Tsuji, 2000a), in the
atmosphere of Betelgeuse has been proposed to account for the near- and
mid-infrared spectroscopic observations of Betelgeuse. The goal is to further
test this hypothesis and to identify some of the molecules in this MOLsphere.
We report on measurements taken with the mid-infrared two-telescope beam
combiner of the VLTI, MIDI, operated between 7.5 and 13.5 m. The data are
compared to a simple geometric model of a photosphere surrounded by a warm
absorbing and emitting shell. Physical characteristics of the shell are
derived: size, temperature and optical depth. The chemical constituents are
determined with an analysis consistent with available infrared spectra and
interferometric data. We are able to account for the measured optical depth of
the shell in the N band, the ISO-SWS spectrum and K and L band interferometric
data with a shell whose inner and outer radii are given by the above range and
with the following species: H2O, SiO and Al2O3. These results confirm the
MOLsphere model. We bring evidence for more constituents and for the presence
of species participating in the formation of dust grains in the atmosphere of
the star, i.e. well below the distance at which the dust shell is detected. We
believe these results bring key elements to the understanding of mass loss in
Betelgeuse and red supergiants in general and bring support to the dust-driven

Dynamics of liquid 4He in Vycor
We have measured the dynamic structure factor of liquid 4He in Vycor using
neutron inelastic scattering. Well-defined phonon-roton (p-r) excitations are
observed in the superfluid phase for all wave vectors 0.3 < Q < 2.15. The p-r
energies and lifetimes at low temperature (T = 0.5 K) and their temperature
dependence are the same as in bulk liquid 4He. However, the weight of the
single p-r component does not scale with the superfluid fraction (SF) as it
does in the bulk. In particular, we observe a p-r excitation between T_c =
1.952 K, where SF = 0, and T_(lambda)=2.172 K of the bulk. This suggests, if
the p-r excitation intensity scales with the Bose condensate, that there is a
separation of the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature and the superfluid
transition temperature T_c of 4He in Vycor. We also observe a two-dimensional
layer mode near the roton wave vector. Its dispersion is consistent with
specific heat and SF measurements and with layer modes observed on graphite

19F labelled glycosaminoglycan probes for solution NMR and non-linear (CARS) microscopy
Studying polysaccharide-protein interactions under physiological conditions by conventional techniques is challenging. Ideally, macromolecules could be followed by both in vitro spectroscopy experiments as well as in tissues using microscopy, to enable a proper comparison of results over these different scales but, often, this is not feasible. The cell surface and extracellular matrix polysaccharides, glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) lack groups that can be detected selectively in the biological milieu. The introduction of 19F labels into GAG polysaccharides is explored and the interaction of a labelled GAG with the
heparin-binding protein, antithrombin, employing 19F NMR spectroscopy is followed.
Furthermore, the ability of 19F labelled GAGs to be imaged using CARS microscopy is demonstrated. 19F labelled GAGs enable both 19F NMR protein-GAG binding studies in solution at the molecular level and non-linear microscopy at a microscopic scale to be conducted on the same material, essentially free of background signals
Small BGK waves and nonlinear Landau damping
Consider 1D Vlasov-poisson system with a fixed ion background and periodic
condition on the space variable. First, we show that for general homogeneous
equilibria, within any small neighborhood in the Sobolev space W^{s,p}
(p>1,s<1+(1/p)) of the steady distribution function, there exist nontrivial
travelling wave solutions (BGK waves) with arbitrary minimal period and
traveling speed. This implies that nonlinear Landau damping is not true in
W^{s,p}(s<1+(1/p)) space for any homogeneous equilibria and any spatial period.
Indeed, in W^{s,p} (s<1+(1/p)) neighborhood of any homogeneous state, the long
time dynamics is very rich, including travelling BGK waves, unstable
homogeneous states and their possible invariant manifolds. Second, it is shown
that for homogeneous equilibria satisfying Penrose's linear stability
condition, there exist no nontrivial travelling BGK waves and unstable
homogeneous states in some W^{s,p} (p>1,s>1+(1/p)) neighborhood. Furthermore,
when p=2,we prove that there exist no nontrivial invariant structures in the
H^{s} (s>(3/2)) neighborhood of stable homogeneous states. These results
suggest the long time dynamics in the W^{s,p} (s>1+(1/p)) and particularly, in
the H^{s} (s>(3/2)) neighborhoods of a stable homogeneous state might be
relatively simple. We also demonstrate that linear damping holds for initial
perturbations in very rough spaces, for linearly stable homogeneous state. This
suggests that the contrasting dynamics in W^{s,p} spaces with the critical
power s=1+(1/p) is a trully nonlinear phenomena which can not be traced back to
the linear level
Relaxin, a pleiotropic vasodilator for the treatment of heart failure
Relaxin is a naturally occurring peptide hormone that plays a central role in the hemodynamic and renovascular adaptive changes that occur during pregnancy. Triggering similar changes could potentially be beneficial in the treatment of patients with heart failure. The effects of relaxin include the production of nitric oxide, inhibition of endothelin, inhibition of angiotensin II, production of VEGF, and production of matrix metalloproteinases. These effects lead to systemic and renal vasodilation, increased arterial compliance, and other vascular changes. The recognition of this has led to the study of relaxin for the treatment of heart failure. An initial pilot study has shown favorable hemodynamic effects in patients with heart failure, including reduction in ventricular filling pressures and increased cardiac output. The ongoing RELAX-AHF clinical program is designed to evaluate the effects of relaxin on the symptoms and outcomes in a large group of patients admitted to hospital for acute heart failure. This review will summarize both the biology of relaxin and the data supporting its potential efficacy in human heart failure
