Silica-Related Catalysts for CO2 Transformation into Methanol and Dimethyl Ether
The climate situation that the planet is experiencing, mainly due to the emission of
greenhouse gases, poses great challenges to mitigate it. Since CO2 is the most abundant greenhouse
gas, it is essential to reduce its emissions or, failing that, to use it to obtain chemicals of industrial
interest. In recent years, much research have focused on the use of CO2 to obtain methanol, which is a
raw material for the synthesis of several important chemicals, and dimethyl ether, which is advertised
as the cleanest and highest eciency diesel substitute fuel. Given that the bibliography on these
catalytic reactions is already beginning to be extensive, and due to the great variety of catalysts
studied by the dierent research groups, this review aims to expose the most important catalytic
characteristics to take into account in the design of silica-based catalysts for the conversion of carbon
dioxide to methanol and dimethyl ether

A broadened scope for the use of hydrazones as neutral nucleophiles in the presence of H-bonding organocatalysts
Using thioureas as H-bonding organocatalysts, nitroalkenes can be activated for the conjugate addition of hydrazones as neutral nucleophiles. Formaldehyde derivatives react at the azomethine carbon as expected, whereas hydrazones from enolizable aldehydes behave as ene-hydrazines and react at the α-carbon instead. Ionic liquids were found to decrease the reaction times considerably compared to commonly used solvents, whereas alternative activation by Lewis acids resulted in decomposition of reactants
A cross-national study of school students' perceptions of political messages in two national election campaigns
The aim of this study is to understand, qualitatively, the ways in which school students from England and the US engaged with campaign messages during two national elections. We combined data from eight focus groups conducted in four schools in England (2 primary/elementary and 2 secondary/high; N = 60) and individual interviews conducted in one school in the US (N=19). Three common themes were identified from our cross-national data: the trustworthiness of candidates, equality, and the narrative surrounding immigration. We argue that it is important for students to have spaces to understand, explore and debate political messages and for teachers to feel confident and able to engage with those campaign messages especially where they may be controversial, partisan or challenging
Bisphenol A induces otolith malformations during vertebrate embryogenesis
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The plastic monomer and plasticizer bisphenol A (BPA), used for manufacturing polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins, is produced at over 2.5 million metric tons per year. Concerns have been raised that BPA acts as an endocrine disruptor on both developmental and reproductive processes and a large body of evidence suggests that BPA interferes with estrogen and thyroid hormone signaling. Here, we investigated BPA effects during embryonic development using the zebrafish and <it>Xenopus </it>models.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We report that BPA exposure leads to severe malformations of the otic vesicle. In zebrafish and in <it>Xenopus </it>embryos, exposure to BPA during the first developmental day resulted in dose-dependent defects in otolith formation. Defects included aggregation, multiplication and occasionally failure to form otoliths. As no effects on otolith development were seen with exposure to micromolar concentrations of thyroid hormone, 17-ß-estradiol or of the estrogen receptor antagonist ICI 182,780 we conclude that the effects of BPA are independent of estrogen receptors or thyroid-hormone receptors. Na<sup>+</sup>/K<sup>+ </sup>ATPases are crucial for otolith formation in zebrafish. Pharmacological inhibition of the major Na<sup>+</sup>/K<sup>+ </sup>ATPase with ouabain can rescue the BPA-induced otolith phenotype.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The data suggest that the spectrum of BPA action is wider than previously expected and argue for a systematic survey of the developmental effects of this endocrine disruptor.</p
The Gray Needle: Large Grains in the HD 15115 Debris Disk from LBT/PISCES/Ks and LBTI/LMIRcam/L' Adaptive Optics Imaging
We present diffraction-limited \ks band and \lprime adaptive optics images of
the edge-on debris disk around the nearby F2 star HD 15115, obtained with a
single 8.4 m primary mirror at the Large Binocular Telescope. At \ks band the
disk is detected at signal-to-noise per resolution element (SNRE) \about 3-8
from \about 1-2\fasec 5 (45-113 AU) on the western side, and from \about
1.2-2\fasec 1 (63-90 AU) on the east. At \lprime the disk is detected at SNRE
\about 2.5 from \about 1-1\fasec 45 (45-90 AU) on both sides, implying more
symmetric disk structure at 3.8 \microns . At both wavelengths the disk has a
bow-like shape and is offset from the star to the north by a few AU. A surface
brightness asymmetry exists between the two sides of the disk at \ks band, but
not at \lprime . The surface brightness at \ks band declines inside 1\asec
(\about 45 AU), which may be indicative of a gap in the disk near 1\asec. The
\ks - \lprime disk color, after removal of the stellar color, is mostly grey
for both sides of the disk. This suggests that scattered light is coming from
large dust grains, with 3-10 \microns -sized grains on the east side and 1-10
\microns dust grains on the west. This may suggest that the west side is
composed of smaller dust grains than the east side, which would support the
interpretation that the disk is being dynamically affected by interactions with

First Light LBT AO Images of HR 8799 bcde at 1.65 and 3.3 Microns: New Discrepancies between Young Planets and Old Brown Dwarfs
As the only directly imaged multiple planet system, HR 8799 provides a unique
opportunity to study the physical properties of several planets in parallel. In
this paper, we image all four of the HR 8799 planets at H-band and 3.3 microns
with the new LBT adaptive optics system, PISCES, and LBTI/LMIRCam. Our images
offer an unprecedented view of the system, allowing us to obtain H and 3.3$
micron photometry of the innermost planet (for the first time) and put strong
upper-limits on the presence of a hypothetical fifth companion. We find that
all four planets are unexpectedly bright at 3.3 microns compared to the
equilibrium chemistry models used for field brown dwarfs, which predict that
planets should be faint at 3.3 microns due to CH4 opacity. We attempt to model
the planets with thick-cloudy, non-equilibrium chemistry atmospheres, but find
that removing CH4 to fit the 3.3 micron photometry increases the predicted L'
(3.8 microns) flux enough that it is inconsistent with observations. In an
effort to fit the SED of the HR 8799 planets, we construct mixtures of cloudy
atmospheres, which are intended to represent planets covered by clouds of
varying opacity. In this scenario, regions with low opacity look hot and
bright, while regions with high opacity look faint, similar to the patchy cloud
structures on Jupiter and L/T transition brown-dwarfs. Our mixed cloud models
reproduce all of the available data, but self-consistent models are still
necessary to demonstrate their viability.Comment: Accepted to Ap
Study of the decay
The decay is studied
in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of TeV
using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5
collected by the LHCb experiment. In the system, the
state observed at the BaBar and Belle experiments is
resolved into two narrower states, and ,
whose masses and widths are measured to be where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second
systematic. The results are consistent with a previous LHCb measurement using a
prompt sample. Evidence of a new
state is found with a local significance of , whose mass and width
are measured to be and , respectively. In addition, evidence of a new decay mode
is found with a significance of
. The relative branching fraction of with respect to the
decay is measured to be , where the first
uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third originates from
