    The frequency of spontaneous triploidy in farmedAtlantic salmon produced in Norway during theperiod 2007–2014

    -Background: Spontaneous triploidy has been reported in a number of fish species, and is often linked with in vivo or in vitro ageing of eggs post ovulation. Here, we provide the first investigation into the frequency of spontaneous triploidy in farmed Atlantic salmon by analysing more than 4000 fish from 55 farms, and approximately 1000 recaptured escapees, all sampled in the period 2007–2014. In addition, we compare microsatellite genotyping against flow cytometry and red blood cell diameter in a set of 45 putatively diploid and 45 putatively triploid Atlantic salmon. Results: The three methods implemented for ploidy determination gave consistent results, thus validating the methods used here. Overall, 2.0% spontaneous triploids were observed in salmon sampled on farms. The frequency of spontaneous triploids varied greatly among sea cages (0-28%), but they were observed in similar frequencies among the three primary breeding companies (1.8-2.4%). Spontaneous triploids were observed in all farming regions in Norway, and in all years sampled. Spontaneous triploids were also observed among the escapees recaptured in both the marine environment and in rivers. Conclusions: Spontaneous triploidy in commercially produced Atlantic salmon is likely to be a result of the practices employed by the industry. For logistical reasons, there is sometimes a pause of hours, and in some cases overnight, between killing the female broodfish, removal of her eggs, and fertilization. This gives the eggs time to age post ovulation, and increases the probability of duplication of the maternal chromosome set by inhibition of the second polar body release after normal meiosis II in the oocyte

    Clusters of galaxies are uniquely important cosmological probes of the evolution of the large scale structure, whose diagnostic power depends quite significantly on the ability to reliably determine their masses. Clusters are typically modeled as spherical systems whose intracluster gas is in strict hydrostatic equilibrium (i.e., the equilibrium gas pressure is provided entirely by thermal pressure), with the gravitational field dominated by dark matter, assumptions that are only rough approximations. In fact, numerical simulations indicate that galaxy clusters are typically triaxial, rather than spherical, and that turbulent gas motions (induced during hierarchical merger events) provide an appreciable pressure component. Extending our previous work, we present results of a joint analysis of X-ray, weak and strong lensing measurements of Abell 1689. The quality of the data allows us to determine both the triaxial shape of the cluster and the level of non-thermal pressure that is required if the intracluster gas is in hydrostatic equilibrium. We find that the dark matter axis ratios are 1.24 +/- 0.13 and 2.02 +/- 0.01 on the plane of the sky and along the line of sight, respectively, and that about 20% of the pressure is non-thermal. Our treatment demonstrates that the dynamical properties of clusters can be determined in a (mostly) bias-free way, enhancing the use of clusters as more precise cosmological probes.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Autonomous Surface and Underwater Vehicles as Effective Ecosystem Monitoring and Research Platforms in the Arctic—The Glider Project

    Effective ocean management requires integrated and sustainable ocean observing systems enabling us to map and understand ecosystem properties and the effects of human activities. Autonomous subsurface and surface vehicles, here collectively referred to as “gliders”, are part of such ocean observing systems providing high spatiotemporal resolution. In this paper, we present some of the results achieved through the project “Unmanned ocean vehicles, a flexible and cost-efficient offshore monitoring and data management approach—GLIDER”. In this project, three autonomous surface and underwater vehicles were deployed along the Lofoten–Vesterålen (LoVe) shelf-slope-oceanic system, in Arctic Norway. The aim of this effort was to test whether gliders equipped with novel sensors could effectively perform ecosystem surveys by recording physical, biogeochemical, and biological data simultaneously. From March to September 2018, a period of high biological activity in the area, the gliders were able to record a set of environmental parameters, including temperature, salinity, and oxygen, map the spatiotemporal distribution of zooplankton, and record cetacean vocalizations and anthropogenic noise. A subset of these parameters was effectively employed in near-real-time data assimilative ocean circulation models, improving their local predictive skills. The results presented here demonstrate that autonomous gliders can be effective long-term, remote, noninvasive ecosystem monitoring and research platforms capable of operating in high-latitude marine ecosystems. Accordingly, these platforms can record high-quality baseline environmental data in areas where extractive activities are planned and provide much-needed information for operational and management purposes

    Experimental transmission of piscine orthoreovirus-1 (PRV-1) in different life stages of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and brown trout (Salmo trutta)

    Piscine orthoreovirus -1 (PRV-1) causes the disease heart and skeletal muscle inflammation (HSMI) in farmed Atlantic salmon, and the virus has been detected in wild anadromous Atlantic salmon and brown trout. However, the infection prevalence, viral kinetics, and disease severity in different life stages of Atlantic salmon and brown trout are unknown. The current study aimed to evaluate and compare susceptibility to PRV-1 infection and development of HSMI in different life stages of anadromous Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and brown trout (Salmo trutta). We challenged Atlantic salmon and brown trout fry, parr, and post-smolts with PRV-1 by bath, cohabitation, or IP injection. The kinetics of viral infection and disease development were evaluated by RT-qPCR, in situ hybridization, and histology. Our results indicated that PRV-1 infection prevalence and viral kinetics depend on the developmental stage and challenge method in both Atlantic salmon and brown trout. All developmental stages of Atlantic salmon and brown trout can be infected with PRV-1. However, brown trout showed a lower infection prevalence, with positive cases exhibiting only mild infections without any pathological changes in the target organs, while all life stages of Atlantic salmon developed heart lesions characteristic of HSMI. These results strongly suggest that brown trout are less susceptible to PRV-1 infection than Atlantic salmon and further confirm the species-specific susceptibility and disease development for PRV-1 infection

    Constraint-based modeling analysis of the metabolism of two Pelobacter species

    BACKGROUND: Pelobacter species are commonly found in a number of subsurface environments, and are unique members of the Geobacteraceae family. They are phylogenetically intertwined with both Geobacter and Desulfuromonas species. Pelobacter species likely play important roles in the fermentative degradation of unusual organic matters and syntrophic metabolism in the natural environments, and are of interest for applications in bioremediation and microbial fuel cells. RESULTS: In order to better understand the physiology of Pelobacter species, genome-scale metabolic models for Pelobacter carbinolicus and Pelobacter propionicus were developed. Model development was greatly aided by the availability of models of the closely related Geobacter sulfurreducens and G. metallireducens. The reconstructed P. carbinolicus model contains 741 genes and 708 reactions, whereas the reconstructed P. propionicus model contains 661 genes and 650 reactions. A total of 470 reactions are shared among the two Pelobacter models and the two Geobacter models. The different reactions between the Pelobacter and Geobacter models reflect some unique metabolic capabilities such as fermentative growth for both Pelobacter species. The reconstructed Pelobacter models were validated by simulating published growth conditions including fermentations, hydrogen production in syntrophic co-culture conditions, hydrogen utilization, and Fe(III) reduction. Simulation results matched well with experimental data and indicated the accuracy of the models. CONCLUSIONS: We have developed genome-scale metabolic models of P. carbinolicus and P. propionicus. These models of Pelobacter metabolism can now be incorporated into the growing repertoire of genome scale models of the Geobacteraceae family to aid in describing the growth and activity of these organisms in anoxic environments and in the study of their roles and interactions in the subsurface microbial community

    Lillehammer panorama er et boligprosjekt som vurderes å bygges i Nordsetervegen, i åsene ovenfor Lillehammer sentrum. Prosjektet skal bestå av ca. 60 leiligheter over et totalt areal på i overkant av 5000 m², i tillegg til parkeringsplasser over et areal på rundt 3000 m². Prosjektet ligger i solrike omgivelser med flott utsikt over Lillehammer og Mjøsa. I forbindelse med dette prosjektet har vi fått i oppgave å finne krav til U-verdi, brann, lyd, universell utforming, samt sjekke vertikaliteten av bygget, plassere føringsvegger og tekniske utstyr i tillegg til at vi skal tegne og vurdere byggets konstruksjonsmetode og bærevegger. Vi fikk også i oppgave å utforme en fremdriftsplan, en riggplan og et hefte som beskriver hvordan en riggplan utformes. Disse forskjellige oppgavene har blitt fordelt på gruppens medlemmer på en slik måte at alle skulle få omtrent like stor arbeidsmengde i løpet av perioden, hvilket vi mener vi har lyktes godt med. Alle har møtt på problemer og har måttet ta avgjørelser for å komme seg videre med oppgaven. Mange av disse avgjørelsene har kommet frem etter møter med Skanska eller en av de andre veilederne våre

    Therapeutic hypothermia and N-PASS; results from implementation in a level 3 NICU

    Background Neonates that have been subjected to perinatal asphyxia and fulfill criteria for therapeutic hypothermia are cooled to 33.5 °C for 72 h. There is no consensus regarding sedation and analgesic use during hypothermia, but there is evidence supporting the importance of pain relief and adequate sedation. There is a need for assessment of the neonates need for pain relief and sedation, and for adjustments of medication to ensure adequate treatment. There are many different scoring tools available. We found the N-PASS (Neonatal Pain, Agitation and Sedation Scale) scoring tool to be the most suitable for this patient group as it assesses both pain and sedation. Methods We translated the scoring tool according to guidelines published by Wilder et al., and scored neonates treated with therapeutic hypothermia. Sedation and analgesia were adjusted according to scoring results. At the end of the study a questionnaire was filled out by the nurses in charge of this group of patients. Results Both pain and sedation scores did not reach the desired levels until day 3. The nurses reported a high level of satisfaction (79.7% were extremely of very satisfied), and 96.7% of the nurses found the neonates to be better pain relieved after the initiation of the study. Conclusion The implementation of the N-PASS scoring tool in our unit has been successful, and has led to better pain relief and sedation than before the implementation

    Objectives. The inflammatory response to on-pump cardiac surgery is well known. Systemic inflammatory response syndrome after transcatheter valve implantation (TAVI) has been reported. The objective of this study was to study the inflammatory response during TAVI, and compare with the response during surgical aortic valve replacement. Methods. Eighteen patients undergoing transcatheter implantation, either by a transfemoral (n = 9) or transaortal (n = 9) approach were compared with eighteen patients admitted for surgical replacement. Blood samples per- and postoperatively were analysed for C3bc, terminal complement complex, myeloperoxidase, macrophage inflammatory protein-1β, monocyte chemo-attractant peptide-1, eotaxin, IL-6 and troponin-T. All markers were measured at defined time points and the areas under the curve were compared. Results. Activation of complement, granulocytes, monocytes and eosinophils were significantly lower in the transcatheter group as compared to the surgical group (Discussion. Activation and release of inflammatory markers was significantly less during with TAVI as compared to SAVR, particularly for markers associated with extracorporeal circulation. TAVI and SAVR generated the same degree of IL-6 and troponin T, indicating that the burden on the myocardial tissue was the same

    It is a scientific aim to integrate genetic monitoring and assessment methods into advice and management. There is, in principle, particular potential to implement advances in salient concepts and technologies into fisheries resource management, governance and policy formulation. The overall aim is to enhance the integration of genetic monitoring and assessment methods into advice and management. The nature and effectiveness of implementation processes, as well as a consideration of strategies to promote such integration within the context of the ICES structure and community and beyond will be considered. As such, the ToR provides an opportunity to review past and current impact of outputs generated via the annual WGAGFM meetings and associated activities.JRC.D.2-Water and Marine Resource
