Auswirkungen mehrjÀhriger ökologischer Bewirtschaftung auf ausgewÀhlte Bodeneigenschaften
The effects of ecological vs. conventional farming on several biological, chemical and physical soil properties were investigated at the arable test site GĂŒlzow (Northeast Germany). After ten years of ecological farming increased activities of dehydrogenase, ÎČ-glucosidase and alkaline phosphatase in the soil were measured. Low effects on the chemical soil properties like content of Corg, Nt and soil organic matter and no signifi-cant effects on physical soil properties like density, porosity and water retention were observed
Execution of the SimSET Monte Carlo PET/SPECT Simulator in the Condor Distributed Computing Environment
SimSET is a package for simulation of emission tomography data sets. Condor is a popular distributed computing environment. Simple C/C++ applications and shell scripts are presented which allow the execution of SimSET on the Condor environment. This is accomplished without any modification to SimSET by executing multiple instances and using its combinebin utility. This enables research facilities without dedicated parallel computing systems to utilize the idle cycles of desktop workstations to greatly reduce the run times of their SimSET simulations. The necessary steps to implement this approach in other environments are presented along with sample results
Innovation and venture capital exit performance
Venture capital is a potent source of R&D financing which contributes significantly to technological innovation output in the form of patented inventions. Scholars have argued that tighter protection of intellectual property rights reduces expropriation risks and encourages venture capitalists to invest in technology firms. Prior studies have showed that early stage technology investors give much weight to investment selection criteria related to innovation e.g. protection of intellectual property, platform and uniqueness. However, VC investors generally receive little on their investments until a liquidation event occurs â IPO and M&A (trade sale) exits define venture capital performance.
A review of the literature indicates that few empirical studies have examined the influence of patented innovation on the exit performance of VC-backed technology firms. This paper seeks to address this specific knowledge gap in venture capital research and practice. It builds on resource-based view (RBV) theory which argues that technological innovation is an important strategic resource of the entrepreneurial firm that can attract VC investment, provide competitive advantage and produce superior performance.
This study is based on matched data compiled from VentureXpertTM, DelphionTM and NBER/USPTO databases. The resulting unique and proprietary dataset consists of 1504 U.S. VC-backed exits across 7 technology sectors in the 20 years from 1980-2000, 961 IPOs and 543 M&As. The influence of technological innovation on the exit performance of VC-backed technology firms is examined. As predicted by RBV theory, technology firms engaged in patenting activity were found more likely to be associated with the more profitable IPO exit route, higher VC investment and exit value
Evolutionary Sequence Analysis and Visualization with Wasabi
Wasabi is an open-source, web-based graphical environment for evolutionary sequence analysis and visualization, designed to work with multiple sequence alignments within their phylogenetic context. Its interactive user interface provides convenient access to external data sources and computational tools and is easily extendable with custom tools and pipelines using a plugin system. Wasabi stores intermediate editing and analysis steps as workflow histories and provides direct-access web links to datasets, allowing for reproducible, collaborative research, and easy dissemination of the results. In addition to shared analyses and installation-free usage, the web-based design allows Wasabi to be run as a cross-platform, stand-alone application and makes its integration to other web services straightforward. This chapter gives a detailed description and guidelines for the use of Wasabi's analysis environment. Example use cases will give step-by-step instructions for practical application of the public Wasabi, from quick data visualization to branched analysis pipelines and publishing of results. We end with a brief discussion of advanced usage of Wasabi, including command-line communication, interface extension, offline usage, and integration to local and public web services.Peer reviewe
Shell-structure effect on elastic alpha scattering
Back-angle enhancements of elastic alpha -scattering cross sections have been observed for nuclei at the ends of the 1p, 2s-1d, and f7 / 2 shells. Strong reduction of this enhancement occurs if excess neutrons enter the next open major shell. The results are discussed in terms of intermediate alpha structure
A Computational Approach for Designing Tiger Corridors in India
Wildlife corridors are components of landscapes, which facilitate the
movement of organisms and processes between intact habitat areas, and thus
provide connectivity between the habitats within the landscapes. Corridors are
thus regions within a given landscape that connect fragmented habitat patches
within the landscape. The major concern of designing corridors as a
conservation strategy is primarily to counter, and to the extent possible,
mitigate the effects of habitat fragmentation and loss on the biodiversity of
the landscape, as well as support continuance of land use for essential local
and global economic activities in the region of reference. In this paper, we
use game theory, graph theory, membership functions and chain code algorithm to
model and design a set of wildlife corridors with tiger (Panthera tigris
tigris) as the focal species. We identify the parameters which would affect the
tiger population in a landscape complex and using the presence of these
identified parameters construct a graph using the habitat patches supporting
tiger presence in the landscape complex as vertices and the possible paths
between them as edges. The passage of tigers through the possible paths have
been modelled as an Assurance game, with tigers as an individual player. The
game is played recursively as the tiger passes through each grid considered for
the model. The iteration causes the tiger to choose the most suitable path
signifying the emergence of adaptability. As a formal explanation of the game,
we model this interaction of tiger with the parameters as deterministic finite
automata, whose transition function is obtained by the game payoff.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 6 tables, NGCT conference 201

Cross validation of bi-modal health-related stress assessment
This study explores the feasibility of objective and ubiquitous stress assessment. 25 post-traumatic stress disorder patients participated in a controlled storytelling (ST) study and an ecologically valid reliving (RL) study. The two studies were meant to represent an early and a late therapy session, and each consisted of a "happy" and a "stress triggering" part. Two instruments were chosen to assess the stress level of the patients at various point in time during therapy: (i) speech, used as an objective and ubiquitous stress indicator and (ii) the subjective unit of distress (SUD), a clinically validated Likert scale. In total, 13 statistical parameters were derived from each of five speech features: amplitude, zero-crossings, power, high-frequency power, and pitch. To model the emotional state of the patients, 28 parameters were selected from this set by means of a linear regression model and, subsequently, compressed into 11 principal components. The SUD and speech model were cross-validated, using 3 machine learning algorithms. Between 90% (2 SUD levels) and 39% (10 SUD levels) correct classification was achieved. The two sessions could be discriminated in 89% (for ST) and 77% (for RL) of the cases. This report fills a gap between laboratory and clinical studies, and its results emphasize the usefulness of Computer Aided Diagnostics (CAD) for mental health care
