    Type IIA Superstrings, Chiral Symmetry, and N=1 4D Gauge Theory Dualities

    We study N=1 four dimensional gauge theories as the world volume theory of D4-branes between NS 5-branes. We find constructions for a number of known field theory dualities involving SU(Nc)×SU(Ncâ€Č)SU(N_c)\times SU(N_c') groups, coupled by matter fields F in the (Nc,Nˉc)(N_c, \bar N_c) representation, in terms of branes of type IIA string theory. The dual gauge group follows from simply reversing the ordering of the NS 5-branes and the D6-branes while conserving magnetic charge on the world volume of the branes. We interpret many field theory phenomena such as deformation of the superpotential W = \Tr (F\tilde F)^{k+1} in terms of the position of branes. By looking to D-branes for guidance, we find new N=1 dualities involving arbitrary numbers of gauge groups. We propose a mechanism for enhanced chiral symmetry in the brane construction which, we conjecture, is associated with tensionless threebranes in six dimensions.Comment: 32 pages, 9 figures, uses harvmac, tables, and eps

    Sparse and stable Markowitz portfolios

    We consider the problem of portfolio selection within the classical Markowitz mean-variance framework, reformulated as a constrained least-squares regression problem. We propose to add to the objective function a penalty proportional to the sum of the absolute values of the portfolio weights. This penalty regularizes (stabilizes) the optimization problem, encourages sparse portfolios (i.e. portfolios with only few active positions), and allows to account for transaction costs. Our approach recovers as special cases the no-short-positions portfolios, but does allow for short positions in limited number. We implement this methodology on two benchmark data sets constructed by Fama and French. Using only a modest amount of training data, we construct portfolios whose out-of-sample performance, as measured by Sharpe ratio, is consistently and significantly better than that of the naive evenly-weighted portfolio which constitutes, as shown in recent literature, a very tough benchmark.Comment: Better emphasis of main result, new abstract, new examples and figures.     Sparse and stable Markowitz portfolios

    We consider the problem of portfolio selection within the classical Markowitz meanvariance optimizing framework, which has served as the basis for modern portfolio theory for more than 50 years. Efforts to translate this theoretical foundation into a viable portfolio construction algorithm have been plagued by technical difficulties stemming from the instability of the original optimization problem with respect to the available data. Often, instabilities of this type disappear when a regularizing constraint or penalty term is incorporated in the optimization procedure. This approach seems not to have been used in portfolio design until very recently. To provide such a stabilization, we propose to add to the Markowitz objective function a penalty which is proportional to the sum of the absolute values of the portfolio weights. This penalty stabilizes the optimization problem, automatically encourages sparse portfolios, and facilitates an effective treatment of transaction costs. We implement our methodology using as our securities two sets of portfolios constructed by Fama and French: the 48 industry portfolios and 100 portfolios formed on size and book-to-market. Using only a modest amount of training data, we construct portfolios whose out-of-sample performance, as measured by Sharpe ratio, is consistently and significantly better than that of the naĂŻve portfolio comprising equal investments in each available asset. In addition to their excellent performance, these portfolios have only a small number of active positions, a desirable feature for small investors, for whom the fixed overhead portion of the transaction cost is not negligible.     Star Cluster Candidates in M81

    We present a catalog of extended objects in the vicinity of M81 based a set of 24 Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Wide Field Camera (WFC) F814W (I-band) images. We have found 233 good globular cluster candidates; 92 candidate HII regions, OB associations, or diffuse open clusters; 489 probable background galaxies; and 1719 unclassified objects. We have color data from ground-based g- and r-band MMT Megacam images for 79 galaxies, 125 globular cluster candidates, 7 HII regions, and 184 unclassified objects. The color-color diagram of globular cluster candidates shows that most fall into the range 0.25 < g-r < 1.25 and 0.5 < r-I < 1.25, similar to the color range of Milky Way globular clusters. Unclassified objects are often blue, suggesting that many of them are likely to be HII regions and open clusters, although a few galaxies and globular clusters may be among them.Comment: 35 pages, 11 figures, submitted to A

    The SLUGGS Survey: Globular cluster system kinematics and substructure in NGC 4365

    We present a kinematic analysis of the globular cluster (GC) system of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4365 and find several distinct kinematic substructures. This analysis is carried out using radial velocities for 269 GCs, obtained with the DEIMOS instrument on the Keck II telescope as part of the SAGES Legacy Unifying Globulars and Galaxies Survey (SLUGGS). We find that each of the three (formerly identified) GC colour subpopulations reveal distinct rotation properties. The rotation of the green GC subpopulation is consistent with the bulk of NGC 4365's stellar light, which `rolls' about the photometric major axis. The blue and red GC subpopulations show `normal' rotation about the minor axis. We also find that the red GC subpopulation is rotationally dominated beyond 2.5 arcmin (~17 kpc) and that the root mean squared velocity of the green subpopulation declines sharply with radius suggesting a possible bias towards radial orbits relative to the other GC subpopulations. Additionally, we find a population of low velocity GCs that form a linear structure running from the SW to the NE across NGC 4365 which aligns with the recently reported stellar stream towards NGC 4342. These low velocity GCs have g'-i' colours consistent with the overall NGC 4365 GC system but have velocities consistent with the systemic velocity of NGC 4342. We discuss the possible formation scenarios for the three GC subpopulations as well as the possible origin of the low velocity GC population.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS.     Trace element concentrations in forage seagrass species of Chelonia mydas along the Great Barrier Reef

    Toxic metal exposure is a threat to green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) inhabiting and foraging in coastal seagrass meadows and are of particular concern in local bays of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), as numerous sources of metal contaminants are located within the region. Seagrass species tend to bioaccumulate metals at concentrations greater than that detected in the surrounding environment. Little is known regarding ecotoxicological impacts of environmental metal loads on seagrass or Chelonia mydas (C. mydas), and thus this study aimed to investigate and describe seagrass metal loads in three central GBR coastal sites and one offshore site located in the northern GBR. Primary seagrass forage of C. mydas was identified, and samples collected from foraging sites before and after the 2018/2019 wet season, and multivariate differences in metal profiles investigated between sites and sampling events. Most metals investigated were higher at one or more coastal sites, relative to data obtained from the offshore site, and cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) were found to be higher at all coastal sites. Principle Component Analysis (PCA) found that metal profiles in the coastal sites were similar, but all were distinctly different from that of the offshore data. Coastal foraging sites are influenced by land-based contaminants that can enter the coastal zone via river discharge during periods of heavy rainfall, and impact sites closest to sources. Bioavailability of metal elements are determined by complex interactions and processes that are largely unknown, but association between elevated metal loads and turtle disease warrants further investigation to better understand the impact of environmental contaminants on ecologically important seagrass and associated macrograzers

    Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) Blood and Scute Trace Element Concentrations in the Northern Great Barrier Reef

    Marine turtles face numerous anthropogenic threats, including that of chemical contaminant exposure. The ecotoxicological impact of toxic metals is a global issue facing Chelonia mydas in coastal sites. Local investigation of C. mydas short-term blood metal profiles is an emerging field, while little research has been conducted on scute metal loads as potential indicators of long-term exposure. The aim of the present study was to investigate and describe C. mydas blood and scute metal profiles in coastal and offshore populations of the Great Barrier Reef. This was achieved by analyzing blood and scute material sampled from local C. mydas populations in five field sites, for a suite of ecologically relevant metals. By applying principal component analysis and comparing coastal sample data with those of reference intervals derived from the control site, insight was gleaned on local metal profiles of each population. Blood metal concentrations in turtles from coastal sites were typically elevated when compared with levels recorded in the offshore control population (Howick Island Group). Scute metal profiles were similar in Cockle Bay, Upstart Bay, and Edgecumbe Bay, all of which were distinct from that of Toolakea. Some elements were reported at similar concentrations in blood and scutes, but most were higher in scute samples, indicative of temporal accumulation. Coastal C. mydas populations may be at risk of toxic effects from metals such as Co, which was consistently found to be at concentrations magnitudes above region-specific reference intervals

    Constraints on mass loss and self-enrichment scenarios for the globular clusters of the Fornax dSph

    Recently, high-dispersion spectroscopy has demonstrated conclusively that four of the five globular clusters (GCs) in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy are very metal-poor with [Fe/H]<-2. The remaining cluster, Fornax 4, has [Fe/H]=-1.4. This is in stark contrast to the field star metallicity distribution which shows a broad peak around [Fe/H]=-1 with only a few percent of the stars having [Fe/H]<-2. If we only consider stars and clusters with [Fe/H]<-2 we thus find an extremely high GC specific frequency, SN=400, implying by far the highest ratio of GCs to field stars known anywhere. We estimate that about 1/5-1/4 of all stars in the Fornax dSph with [Fe/H]<-2 belong to the four most metal-poor GCs. These GCs could, therefore, at most have been a factor of 4-5 more massive initially. Yet, the Fornax GCs appear to share the same anomalous chemical abundance patterns known from Milky Way GCs, commonly attributed to the presence of multiple stellar generations within the clusters. The extreme ratio of metal-poor GC- versus field stars in the Fornax dSph is difficult to reconcile with scenarios for self-enrichment and early evolution of GCs in which a large fraction (90%-95%) of the first-generation stars have been lost. It also suggests that the GCs may not have formed as part of a larger population of now disrupted clusters with an initial power-law mass distribution. The Fornax dSph may be a rosetta stone for constraining theories of the formation, self-enrichment and early dynamical evolution of star clusters.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted for A&A Letter

    Branes and Inflationary Cosmology

    We discuss a brane based inflationary scenario in which an initially non-supersymmetric configuration involving a D4 brane is dynamically transformed into a supersymmteric one in a background space-time geometry determined by a stack of D6 branes. Inflation is realized in the effective four dimensional theory and ends after reaching a stable BPS configuration. The scalar spectral index turns out to be 0.98. Under some simplifying assumption the reheat temperature, Hubble constant and the string scale are estimated to be of order 10810^{8} GeV, 101210^{12} GeV and 101610^{16} GeV, respectively.Comment: 14 pages, LaTeX, 4 eps figure

    The Impact of Initial Treatment Delay Using Primary Angioplasty on Mortality among Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction: from the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry

    The impact of treatment delays to reperfusion on patient mortality after primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is controversial. We analyzed 5,069 patients included in the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry (KAMIR) between November 2005 and January 2007. We selected 1,416 patients who presented within 12 hr of symptom onset and who were treated with primary PCI. The overall mortality at one month was 4.4%. The medians of door-to-balloon time, symptom onset-to-balloon time, and symptom onset-to-door time were 90 (interquartile range, 65-136), 274 (185-442), and 163 min (90-285), respectively. One-month mortality was not increased significantly with any increasing delay in door-to-balloon time (4.3% for ≀90 min, 4.4% for >90 min; p=0.94), symptom onset-to-balloon time (3.9% for ≀240 min, 4.8% for >240 min; p=0.41), and symptom onset-to-door time (3.3% for ≀120 min, 5.0% for >120 min; p=0.13). These time variables had no impact on one-month mortality in any subgroup. Thus, this first nationwide registry data in Korea showed a good result of primary PCI, and the patient prognosis may not depend on the initial treatment delay using the current protocols
