    Phylogenetic Relationships in Pterodroma Petrels Are Obscured by Recent Secondary Contact and Hybridization

    The classification of petrels (Pterodroma spp.) from Round Island, near Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, has confounded researchers since their discovery in 1948. In this study we investigate the relationships between Round Island petrels and their closest relatives using evidence from mitochondrial DNA sequence data and ectoparasites. Far from providing clear delimitation of species boundaries, our results reveal that hybridization among species on Round Island has led to genetic leakage between populations from different ocean basins. The most common species on the island, Pterodroma arminjoniana, appears to be hybridizing with two rarer species (P. heraldica and P. neglecta), subverting the reproductive isolation of all three and allowing gene flow. P. heraldica and P. neglecta breed sympatrically in the Pacific Ocean, where P. arminjoniana is absent, but no record of hybridization between these two exists and they remain phenotypically distinct. The breakdown of species boundaries in Round Island petrels followed environmental change (deforestation and changes in species composition due to hunting) within their overlapping ranges. Such multi-species interactions have implications not only for conservation, but also for our understanding of the processes of evolutionary diversification and speciation

    Mediterranean winter rainfall in phase with African monsoons during the past 1.36 million years

    Mediterranean climates are characterized by strong seasonal contrasts between dry summers and wet winters. Changes in winter rainfall are critical for regional socioeconomic development, but are difficult to simulate accurately1 and reconstruct on Quaternary timescales. This is partly because regional hydroclimate records that cover multiple glacial–interglacial cycles2,3 with different orbital geometries, global ice volume and atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations are scarce. Moreover, the underlying mechanisms of change and their persistence remain unexplored. Here we show that, over the past 1.36 million years, wet winters in the northcentral Mediterranean tend to occur with high contrasts in local, seasonal insolation and a vigorous African summer monsoon. Our proxy time series from Lake Ohrid on the Balkan Peninsula, together with a 784,000-year transient climate model hindcast, suggest that increased sea surface temperatures amplify local cyclone development and refuel North Atlantic low-pressure systems that enter the Mediterranean during phases of low continental ice volume and high concentrations of atmospheric greenhouse gases. A comparison with modern reanalysis data shows that current drivers of the amount of rainfall in the Mediterranean share some similarities to those that drive the reconstructed increases in precipitation. Our data cover multiple insolation maxima and are therefore an important benchmark for testing climate model performance

    Ocean/ice shelf interaction in the southern Weddell Sea: results of a regional numerical helium/neon simulation

    Ocean/ice interaction at the base of deep drafted Antarctic ice shelves modifies the physical properties of inflowing shelf waters to become Ice Shelf Water (ISW).In contrast to the conditions at the atmosphere/ocean interface, the increased hydrostaticpressure at the glacial base causes gases embedded in the ice to solve completely after being released by melting. Helium and neon with an extremely low solubility are supersatured in glacial meltwater by more than 1000%. At the continentalslope in front of the large Antarctic caverns ISW mixes with ambient waters toform different precursors of Antarctic Bottom Water. A regional ocean circulation model is presented which uses an explicit formulation of the ocean/ice shelf interaction to describe for the first time the input of noble gases to the Southern Ocean. The results reveal a long-term variability of the basal mass loss solely controlled by the interaction between waters of the continental shelf and the ice shelf cavern. Modeled helium and neon supersaturations from the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf front reveal a "low-pass" filtering of the inflowing signal due to cavern processes. On circumpolar scales the helium and neon distributions in the Southern Ocean quantify the ISW contribution to bottom water which spreads with the coastal current connecting the major formation sites in Ross and Weddell Seas

    Variability of dense water formation in the Ross Sea

    The paper presents results from a model study of the interannual variability of High Salinity Shelf Water (HSSW) properties in the Ross Sea.Salinity, potential temperature and volume of HSSW formed in the western Ross Sea show oscillatory behaviour at periods of 5-6 and 9 years superimposed on long-term fluctuations.While the shorter oscillations are induced by wind variability, variability on the scale of decades appears to be related to air temperature fluctuations.At least part of the strong decrease of HSSW salinities deduced from observations for the period 1963-2000 is shown to be an aliasing artefact due to an undersampling of the periodic signal.While sea ice formation is responsible for the yearly salinity increase that triggers the formation of High Salinity Shelf Water, interannual variability of net freezing rates hardly affects changes in the properties of the resulting water mass.Instead, results from model experiments indicate that the interannual variability of dense water characteristics is predominantly controlled by variations in the shelf inflow through a sub-surface salinity and a deep temperature signal.The origin of the variability of inflow characteristics to the Ross Sea continental shelf can be traced into the Amundsen and Bellingshausen Seas.The temperature anomalies are induced at the continental shelf break in the western Bellingshausen Sea by fluctuations of the meridional transport of Circumpolar Deep Water with the eastern cell of the Ross Gyre.Upwelling in the centre of this gyre carries the signal into the surface layer where it causes anomalies of brine release near the sea ice edge in the Amundsen Sea, which results in a sub-surface salinity anomaly.With the westward flowing coastal current, both the sub-surface salinity and deep temperature signals are advected onto the Ross Sea continental shelf.Convection carries the signal of salinity variability into the deep ocean, where it interacts with Modified Circumpolar Deep Water upwelled onto the continental shelf as the second source water mass of HSSW.Sea ice formation on the Ross Sea continental shelf thus drives the vertical propagation of the signal rather than determining the signal itself

    Differential Contribution of L-, N-, and P/Q-type Calcium Channels to [Ca2+]i Changes Evoked by Kainate in Hippocampal Neurons

    Abstract We investigated the contribution of L-, N- and P/Q-type Ca2+ channels to the [Ca2+]i changes, evoked by kainate, in the cell bodies of hippocampal neurons, using a pharmacological approach and Ca2+ imaging. Selective Ca2+ channel blockers, namely nitrendipine, ?-Conotoxin GVIA (?-GVIA) and ?-Agatoxin IVA (?-AgaIVA) were used. The [Ca2+]i changes evoked by kainate presented a high variability, and were abolished by NBQX, a AMPA/kainate receptor antagonist, but the N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, D-AP5, was without effect. Each Ca2+ channel blocker caused differential inhibitory effects on [Ca2+]i responses evoked by kainate. We grouped the neurons for each blocker in three subpopulations: (1) neurons with responses below 60% of the control; (2) neurons with responses between 60% and 90% of the control, and (3) neurons with responses above 90% of the control. The inhibition caused by nitrendipine was higher than the inhibition caused by ?-GVIA or ?-AgaIVA. Thus, in the presence of nitrendipine, the percentage of cells with responses below 60% of the control was 41%, whereas in the case of ?-GVIA or ?-AgaIVA the values were 9 or 17%, respectively. The results indicate that hippocampal neurons differ in what concerns their L-, N- and P/Q- type Ca2+ channels activated by stimulation of the AMPA/kainate receptors

    Influence of the Gulf Stream on the troposphere

    The Gulf Stream transports large amounts of heat from the tropics to middle and high latitudes, and thereby affects weather phenomena such as cyclogenesis and low cloud formation. But its climatic influence, on monthly and longer timescales, remains poorly understood. In particular, it is unclear how the warm current affects the free atmosphere above the marine atmospheric boundary layer. Here we consider the Gulf Stream's influence on the troposphere, using a combination of operational weather analyses, satellite observations and an atmospheric general circulation model. Our results reveal that the Gulf Stream affects the entire troposphere. In the marine boundary layer, atmospheric pressure adjustments to sharp sea surface temperature gradients lead to surface wind convergence, which anchors a narrow band of precipitation along the Gulf Stream. In this rain band, upward motion and cloud formation extend into the upper troposphere, as corroborated by the frequent occurrence of very low cloud-top temperatures. These mechanisms provide a pathway by which the Gulf Stream can affect the atmosphere locally, and possibly also in remote regions by forcing planetary waves. The identification of this pathway may have implications for our understanding of the processes involved in climate change, because the Gulf Stream is the upper limb of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, which has varied in strength in the past and is predicted to weaken in response to human-induced global warming in the future

    Bilateral and symmetric globus-pallidus hyperintensities are observed on T1-weighted MRI in most of the patients with chronic liver failure, due to manganese accumulation. We report a 53-year-old man, with rapid onset parkinsonism-dementia complex associated with accumulation of manganese in the brain, secondary to liver failure. A brain MRI was performed and a high signal on T1-weighted images was seen on globus-pallidus, as well as on T2-weighted images on the hemispheric white-matter. He was referred to a liver-transplantation. The patient passed away on the seventh postoperative day. Our findings support the concept of the toxic effects of manganese on the globus-pallidus. The treatment of this form of parkinsonism is controversial and liver-transplantation should not be considered as first line treatment but as an alternative one.<br>Hiperintesidades simétricas e bilaterais dos gânglios da base são observadas em imagens de ressonância magnética encefálica (RM) ponderadas em T1 na maioria dos pacientes com insuficiência hepática crônica devidas ao acúmulo de manganês. Nós relatamos o caso de um homem, com 53 anos de idade, com um complexo parkinsonismo-demência rapidamente progressivo associado com o acúmulo de manganês no cérebro, secundariamente a insuficiência hepática. Uma RM encefálica foi realizada e foram observadas imagens hiperintensas/hipersinal nas imagens ponderadas em T1 no globo pálido e, também, na substância branca dos hemisférios cerebrais ponderadas em T2. Devido à falta de resposta ao tratamento clinico optamos pelo transplante hepático. O paciente faleceu no 7º dia de PO. Nossos achados corroboram o conceito dos efeitos tóxicos do manganês nos gânglios da base/globo pálido. O tratamento desta forma de parkinsonismo é controverso e o transplante hepático não deverá ser considerada uma opção terapêutica de primeira linha, porém como um tratamento alternativo considerando-se os riscos-benefícios dessa escolha
