Formation and Stability of Synaptic Receptor Domains
Neurotransmitter receptor molecules, concentrated in postsynaptic domains
along with scaffold and a number of other molecules, are key regulators of
signal transmission across synapses. Employing experiment and theory, we
develop a quantitative description of synaptic receptor domains in terms of a
reaction-diffusion model. We show that interactions between only receptor and
scaffold molecules, together with the rapid diffusion of receptors on the cell
membrane, are sufficient for the formation and stable characteristic size of
synaptic receptor domains. Our work reconciles long-term stability of synaptic
receptor domains with rapid turnover and diffusion of individual receptors.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Supplementary Materia

Hemodynamic forces, such as Wall Shear Stress, are known to be one of the factors behind atherosclerotic plaque formation in blood vessels. Such plaque formation may lead to clinical conditions such as aneurysms and stenosis. Given the importance of understanding the hemodynamics inside blood vessels, CFD-based (Computational Fluid Dynamics) tools can be applied with Medical imaging techniques, in order to assist physicians. Although CFD simulations try to simulate cases as close as possible to their real physics, simplifications are often required. Furthermore, blood is usually taken as being a single-phase fluid, despite it being a suspension of blood cells in plasma. This is due to the focus of computational hemodynamics often being the whole blood flow or pathologies within the blood vessel. However, blood cells can account to more than half of the blood volume, depending on the patient. Hence, the present work aimed to study the behavior of plasma, flowing around a single erythrocyte, as well as a cluster of erythrocytes immersed in a 2D domain. In the simulations, parameters such as the Reynolds number and velocity profiles were analyzed. Results showed that erythrocyte geometry had an influence in the velocity profiles. Moreover, Reynolds numbers were considerably low, due to the micro scale utilized in the simulations, which was in accordance with literature.
Entropy and Spin Susceptibility of s-wave Type-II Superconductors near
A theoretical study is performed on the entropy and the spin
susceptibility near the upper critical field of s-wave
type-II superconductors with arbitrary impurity concentrations. The changes of
these quantities through may be expressed as , for example, where is the average flux density
and denotes entropy in the normal state. It is found that the
slopes and at T=0 are identical, connected
directly with the zero-energy density of states, and vary from 1.72 in the
dirty limit to in the clean limit. This mean-free-path dependence
of and at T=0 is quantitatively the same as that
of the slope for the flux-flow resistivity studied
previously. The result suggests that and near
T=0 are convex downward (upward) in the dirty (clean) limit, deviating
substantially from the linear behavior . The specific-heat
jump at also shows fairly large mean-free-path dependence.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
