Smoothed Analysis of Dynamic Networks
We generalize the technique of smoothed analysis to distributed algorithms in
dynamic network models. Whereas standard smoothed analysis studies the impact
of small random perturbations of input values on algorithm performance metrics,
dynamic graph smoothed analysis studies the impact of random perturbations of
the underlying changing network graph topologies. Similar to the original
application of smoothed analysis, our goal is to study whether known strong
lower bounds in dynamic network models are robust or fragile: do they withstand
small (random) perturbations, or do such deviations push the graphs far enough
from a precise pathological instance to enable much better performance? Fragile
lower bounds are likely not relevant for real-world deployment, while robust
lower bounds represent a true difficulty caused by dynamic behavior. We apply
this technique to three standard dynamic network problems with known strong
worst-case lower bounds: random walks, flooding, and aggregation. We prove that
these bounds provide a spectrum of robustness when subjected to
smoothing---some are extremely fragile (random walks), some are moderately
fragile / robust (flooding), and some are extremely robust (aggregation).Comment: 20 page

A combined neuro fuzzy-cellular automata based material model for finite element simulation of plane strain compression
This paper presents a modelling strategy that combines Neuro-Fuzzy methods to define the material model with Cellular Automata representations of the microstructure, all embedded within a Finite Element solver that can deal with the large deformations of metal processing technology. We use the acronym nf-CAFE as a label for the method. The need for such an approach arises from the twin demands of computational speed for quick solutions for efficient material characterisation by incorporating metallurgical knowledge for material design models and subsequent process control. In this strategy, the cellular automata hold the microstructural features in terms of sub-grain size and dislocation density which are modelled by a neuro-fuzzy system that predicts the flow stress. The proposed methodology is validated on a two dimensional (2D) plane strain compression finite element simulation with Al-1% Mg alloy. Results from the simulations show the potential of
the model for incorporating the effects of the underlying microstructure on the evolving flow stress fields. In doing this, the paper highlights the importance of understanding the local transition rules that affect the global behaviour during deformation

Nevertheless, few studies have explored the types of errors made by illiterate adults. This is a descriptive study aiming to identify and analyze the errors made by adults participating in the process of learning to read and write using a computerized teaching program. The purpose was to evaluate the adequacy of the program and to point out whether there is a need to develop specific procedures for this population. Fifteen adults were individually submitted to the program, which comprises a sequence of teaching steps and assessments (pre and post-tests and intermediate tests). Errors made by the students were categorized and analyzed according to categories described in the literature as well as new ones created specifically for this study. The data show a high concentration of errors in some categories, particularly for the first teaching module, with partial indication of error type specificity for the population in focus. This study also shows the participants' difficulties in writing (construction spelling task), requiring improvement of the computerized program when applied to adult literacy. Local cultural knowledges and its impacts on the use of natural resources
This work is the result of a study on a set of sociocultural practices that informs the daily habits of an insular community, in which the existence of an ancestral territoriality effects by means of a vast diversity of local cultural knowledge. It aims for the understanding of this knowledge that is built and/or experienced in the everyday experience of men and women with biodiversity. It admits as an assumption that the majority of rural and riverside communities in the context of the Pará Amazon, although facing a daily reality full of adverse conditions, builds in its relationship with nature social strategies that assure its material and symbolic perpetuation. It took guidance by the following questioning-context: How does is it possible to establish the relationship between the local cultural knowledge that streamlines the everyday social practices in an ancestral territoriality and the processes of appropriation and use of natural resouces and the how its effects impact the effectuation of more self-sustainable alternatives and valorisation of the biodiversity? It comprises the island of Colares, a typical place of the Pará Amazon, whose plural identity embraces singular marks of places predefined by the existence of mangroves, forests, igarapés, rivers, in the Pará State. It utilized the procedures of the socio-historical research, such as the narrative withthe use of the semi-structured interview. Its theoretical fundaments lie on sources of study that treat and reflect aboute the possibilities of the construction of new epistemologies accounting to comprehend the knowledge and local cultural practices. The results account a series of socio-environmental problems; the local concern with the maintenance of good environment conditions; a vaste knowledge of use of medicinal plants and herbs, among others. Its conclusion says that, guided by local knowledge, it is possible to develop socio-environmental practices aiming to provide local self-sustainability and continuity to its habits and ways of living
Credit Default and Business Cycles: an empirical investigation of Brazilian retail loans
We use microdata from the Credit Information System (SCR) of the Central Bank of Brazil to study the relationship between credit default and business cycles. In particular, we study the first part of the argument underlying the discussion about procyclicality related to the Basel II Accord: that recessions might increase credit defaults and have adverse impacts on the losses in portfolios of lender institutions. We explore both time series and cross-sectional variation in the data. Our data on the individual level are composed of retail loan transactions in two modalities—Consumer Credit and Vehicle Financing—from 2003 to 2008. Our results support the idea of a negative relationship between business cycles and credit default, but less strong than suggested in previous studies that use corporate data. We also find low and dispersed default correlations, and smaller losses in Value at Risk (VaR) experiments than those found in the literature. These results may be possibly explained by the fact that, in the retail sector, loans are given to a large number of individuals, which may help to diversify risks.
As participantes responderam
Saúde (Adaptação de McIntyre, McIntyre & Redondo, 1999; versão portuguesa do
General Health Questionnaire (12); Goldberg, 1981).
Grief Disorder (PGD -13) (Prigerson & Maciejewski, s/d).
tardios no luto.
restabelecimento. The Dual Process Model of Coping with Bereavement suggests that a good
bereavement adaptation is a dynamic process, involving the confrontation and the
avoidance of stressors aimed at the loss and stressors oriented for the restoration.
According to Stroebe & Schut (1999), the bereaved person performs a dynamic coping
movement, designated Oscillation, whereby his/her attention is oriented alternately
towards the different stressors. The use of this model in the study of bereavement
processes, is of the utmost complete interest, as it allows us to identify and understand
the nature of the bereavement with which the bereaved has to deal (stressors), as well as
the manner how it can be done (confrontation or avoidance). The current work has two
central objectives: a) an operationalization proposal of the Dual Process Model by
Stroebe & Schut (1999) and b) a presentation of the first longitudinal data of the
bereavement process in elderly adults by using the proposed operationalization. Two
inventories for the operationalization of the dual process model were developed: A loss
stressors and restoration inventory and a coping strategies oriented towards loss and
restoration inventory. The established study purposes were the following: a) describe
the self-report of the stressors trajectories and the bereavement coping strategy with the
first seventeen months after the loss; b) evaluate the different evolution dimensions of
the Dual Process Model of Coping with Bereavement based on age, education and the
circumstances of death; c) evaluate the existence of Prolonged Grief Disorders and their
association with stressors and coping strategies; d) evaluate the behavior of the stressors
and the coping strategies depending on attachment styles; e) evaluate the association
between the stressors and coping strategies and the general state of health. Of the
hundred and ninety nine (199) contacts, fifty nine (59) accepted to be integrated in the
participant sample. The age range of the participants was between 65 and 85 years old, (M=72.49 and DP=6.18). The participants responded to the following assessment
instruments: Mini – Cog (Doerflinger & Fairfax, 2007), Socio-demographic
questionnaire (SDQ) and the Adult Attachment Scale (Adapted from Canavarro, M, C,
1995; the Portuguese version of the Adult Attachment Scale-R; Collins & Read, 1990).
Besides these instruments, which were only applied once, all the following instruments
were applied at all times of the study, every four months until reaching a total of seventeen months: Stressors Oriented to Loss and Restoration Inventory (SOLRI),
Coping Strategies Oriented to Loss and Restoration Inventory (CSOLRI) and the
General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) (Adaptation of McIntyre, McIntyre & Redondo,
1999; the Portuguese version of General Health Questionnaire (12); Goldberg, 1981).
Another instrument was also administered starting from the 9th month which was the
Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD-13) (Translated by Silva & Ferreira-Alves (2009)).
Research version of the Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD -13) (Prigerson &
Maciejewski, s/d). The results showed that the self-report of the experience of the loss
stressors indicated a higher intensity of these stressors in the earlier period than in the
later period (17 months after the loss) thus supporting what was the postulated by
Stroebe & Schut (1999) for the Dual Process Model of Coping with Bereavement . We
also determined that the self-report of the use of loss avoidance strategies was
significantly higher in the first 5 months than after 17 months. We also determined that
the participants with ages between 65 and 74 years tended to experiment more intensely
the loss stressors in the earlier period than in the later period, and the same happens with
the use of the loss avoidance strategies which significantly diminish over the course of
time. In regards to education, we also observed that the participants with higher
education used more loss avoidance strategies in the first months than at a later period
of bereavement. The participants, whose spousal death was expected, experienced more
intensely the loss stressors in the first month than in the seventeenth month. The results indicated that the general health state of the participants is worse in the first five months
than at seventeenth months. Only one participant was identified with Prolonged Grief
Disorder. In the case of the participants with a safe attachment style, the self-report of
the loss stressors experience indicated a bigger intensity of these stressors in the first
months than seventeenth months after the loss occurrence. The results of this work
provide, alongside Caserta & Lund (2007), an empirical support of the model
established by Stroebe & Schut (1999). In what concerns the practical implications of
this study, the results indicate that an aid or support process supplied to elderly people
who have suffered spousal loss is a process that must integrate (in a manner adapted to
each individual) the understanding of loss stressors and reestablishment as well as the
use of coping manners pertaining to confrontation and avoidance of loss and
reestablishment
Supersymmetric Polytropic Gas Dynamics
We construct the N=1 supersymmetric extension of the polytropic gas dynamics.
We give both the Lagrangian as well as the Hamiltonian description of this
system. We construct the infinite set of "Eulerian'' conserved charges
associated with this system and show that they are in involution, thereby
proving complete integrability of this system. We construct the SUSY -B
extension of this system as well and comment on the similarities and
differences between this system and an earlier construction of the
supersymmetric Chaplygin gas. We also derive the N=1 supersymmetric extension
of the elastic medium equations, which, however, do not appear to be
integrable.Comment: 15 page
Exact Effective Action for (1+1 Dimensional) Fermions in an Abelian Background at Finite Temperature
In an effort to further understand the structure of effective actions for
fermions in an external gauge background at finite temperature, we study the
example of 1+1 dimensional fermions interacting with an arbitrary Abelian gauge
field. We evaluate the effective action exactly at finite temperature. This
effective action is non-analytic as is expected at finite temperature. However,
contrary to the structure at zero temperature and contrary to naive
expectations, the effective action at finite temperature has interactions to
all (even) orders (which, however, do not lead to any quantum corrections). The
covariant structure thus obtained may prove useful in studying 2+1 dimensional
models in arbitrary backgrounds. We also comment briefly on the solubility of
various 1+1 dimensional models at finite temperature.Comment: A few clarifying remarks added;21 page
Precision evaluation of different flotation solutions in the results of four coprological techniques in ungulates : impact on detecting anthelmintic resistance
Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Medicina VeterináriaAnthelmintic resistance (AHR) in gastrointestinal parasites of ruminants and horses has been continuously described all over the world in the last two decades. In order to delay, or even prevent, the further development of resistance to anthelmintics, a new deworming approach must be taken, considering the diagnostic tools available nowadays. This study aims to evidence the differential performances of four commonly employed coprological methods, using different flotation solutions, and make some practical recommendations on which technique seems better-suited to face this emerging problem in horse management.
This thesis contains two parts. In the first one, three wild ungulate species were analyzed at ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo to determine the repeatability of four common coprological methods – simple flotation (SF), centrifugal flotation (CF), McMaster (McM - sensitivity of 50 eggs per gram EPG) and Mini-FLOTAC (MF – sensitivity of 5 EPG) – in association with three flotation solutions with different specific gravities: salt (SG=1.20), magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) (SG=1.24) and sugar solution (SG=1.28); where each sample was analyzed 10 times. In the second part 17 fecal samples of Sorraia horses were collected in April 2019 (12 females on the pasture and five stabled males) and analyzed with the same methods but only with the salt and sugar solutions; each sample was analyzed in triplicates for SF and CF and in duplicates for McM and MF. As a semi-quantitative parameter, the number of eggs were counted in 10 fields of each slide and the mean was obtained for each replicate.
In the first part of the study, CF was able to evidence a higher amount of total egg counts, especially with the denser solutions, with lower coefficients of variation (CV). MF performed with very good precision across the species, with different solutions apparently better for each one of them. In the second part of the study, SFsalt obtained the best results for detecting Triodontophorus spp. eggs, although not significantly (p>0.05). Yet, it showed lower CV than CF techniques, which makes it a more precise and reliable technique. High parasitic burdens (mean of 1825 EPG for all techniques) were registered and MFsugar performed more consistently as seen by its low variability. Through coprocultures, the prevalence of Cyathostomum s.l. type D (100%) and S. vulgaris (5.9%) were also detected.
The results obtained here support the use of CF and MF methods in zoos as valid diagnostic tools. In general, MF was shown to be more precise and reliable across the study, urging the need to review current guidelines for the diagnosis of AHR, namely in horses. Unexpectedly, a clear association was evidenced, as salt solutions seem to be better suited for qualitative methods, whereas the sugar solutions better suited for quantitative ones instead.RESUMO - A resistência a anti-helmÃnticos (RAH) de parasitas gastrointestinais de ruminantes e cavalos tem sido largamente descrita em todo o mundo nas últimas duas décadas.
