Rate of Period Change as a Diagnostic of Cepheid Properties
Rate of period change for a Cepheid is shown to be a parameter that
is capable of indicating the instability strip crossing mode for individual
objects, and, in conjunction with light amplitude, likely location within the
instability strip. Observed rates of period change in over 200 Milky Way
Cepheids are demonstrated to be in general agreement with predictions from
stellar evolutionary models, although the sample also displays features that
are inconsistent with some published models and indicative of the importance of

Extracurricular Activities and Disadvantaged Youth: A Complicated - But Promising - Story
Increased political and research interest in extracurricular activities stems, in part, from the claim that these programs especially benefit disadvantaged youth. However, little literature has synthesized studies across types of disadvantage to assess this claim. This article reviews research on disadvantaged youth in extracurricular programs, including differences by gender, socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, and immigrant status. Our review reveals a promising, if complicated, picture. Although disadvantaged youth are less likely to participate in extracurricular activities, they often experience greater benefits, depending on the risk status and activity type. Evidence clearly supports expanding access to extracurricular programs for disadvantaged youth
An XMM-Newton view of Planetary Nebulae in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The X-ray luminous central star of SMP SMC 22
During an X-ray survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud, carried out with the
XMM-Newton satellite, we detected significant soft X-ray emission from the
central star of the high-excitation planetary nebula SMP SMC 22. Its very soft
spectrum is well fit with a non local thermodynamical equilibrium model
atmosphere composed of H, He, C, N, and O, with abundances equal to those
inferred from studies of its nebular lines. The derived effective temperature
of 1.5x10^5 K is in good agreement with that found from the optical/UV data.
The unabsorbed flux in the 0.1-0.5 keV range is about 3x10^{-11} erg cm^-2
s^-1, corresponding to a luminosity of 1.2x10^37 erg/s at the distance of 60
kpc. We also searched for X-ray emission from a large number of SMC planetary
nebulae, confirming the previous detection of SMP SMC 25 with a luminosity of
(0.2-6)x10^35 erg/s (0.1-1 keV). For the remaining objects that were not
detected, we derived flux upper limits corresponding to luminosity values from
several tens to hundreds times smaller than that of SMP SMC 22. The
exceptionally high X-ray luminosity of SMP SMC 22 is probably due to the high
mass of its central star, quickly evolving toward the white dwarf's cooling
branch, and to a small intrinsic absorption in the nebula itself.Comment: Accepted for publication on Astronomy and Astrophysic
The XMM-Newton survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud: XMMUJ005011.2-730026 = SXP214, a Be/X-ray binary pulsar
In the course of the XMM-Newton survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), a
region to the east of the emission nebula N19 was observed in November 2009. To
search for new candidates for high mass X-ray binaries the EPIC PN and MOS data
of the detected point sources were investigated and their spectral and temporal
characteristics identified. A new transient (XMMUJ005011.2-730026= SXP214) with
a pulse period of 214.05 s was discovered; the source had a hard X-ray spectrum
with power-law index of ~0.65. The accurate X-ray source location permits the
identification of the X-ray source with a ~15th magnitude Be star, thereby
confirming this system as a new Be/X-ray binary.Comment: 8 pages 11 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA
A framework for Operational Security Metrics Development for industrial control environment
Security metrics are very crucial towards providing insights when measuring security states and susceptibilities in industrial operational environments. Obtaining practical security metrics depend on effective security metrics development approaches. To be effective, a security metrics development framework should be scope-definitive, objective-oriented, reliable, simple, adaptable, and repeatable (SORSAR). A framework for Operational Security Metrics Development (OSMD) for industry control environments is presented, which combines concepts and characteristics from existing approaches. It also adds the new characteristic of adaptability. The OSMD framework is broken down into three phases of: target definition, objective definition, and metrics synthesis. A case study scenario is used to demonstrate an instance of how to implement and apply the proposed framework to demonstrate its usability and workability. Expert elicitation has also be used to consolidate the validity of the proposed framework. Both validation approaches have helped to show that the proposed framework can help create effective and efficient ICS-centric security metrics taxonomy that can be used to evaluate capabilities or vulnerabilities. The understanding from this can help enhance security assurance within industrial operational environments

Progress in resolving Hanford Site high-level waste tank safety issues
Interim storage of alkaline, high-level radioactive waste, from two generations of spent fuel reprocessing and waste management activities, has resulted in the accumulation of 238 million liters of waste in Hanford Site single and double-shell tanks. Before the 1990`s, the stored waste was believed to be: (1) chemically unreactive under its existing storage conditions and plausible accident scenarios; and (2) chemically stable. This paradigm was proven incorrect when detailed evaluation of tank contents and behavior revealed a number of safety issues and that the waste was generating flammable and noxious gases. In 1990, the Waste Tank Safety Program was formed to focus on identifying safety issues and resolving the ferrocyanide, flammable gas, organic, high heat, noxious vapor, and criticality issues. The tanks of concern were placed on Watch Lists by safety issue. This paper summarizes recent progress toward resolving Hanford Site high-level radioactive waste tank safety issues, including modeling, and analyses, laboratory experiments, monitoring upgrades, mitigation equipment, and developing a strategy to screen tanks for safety issues
Highly absorbed X-ray binaries in the Small Magellanic Cloud
Many of the high mass X-ray binaries (HMXRBs) discovered in recent years in
our Galaxy are characterized by a high absorption, most likely intrinsic to the
system, which hampers their detection at the softest X-ray energies. We have
undertaken a search for highly-absorbed X-ray sources in the Small Magellanic
Cloud (SMC) with a systematic analysis of 62 XMM-Newton SMC observations. We
obtained a sample of 30 sources showing evidence for an equivalent hydrogen
column density larger than 3x10^23 cm^-2. Five of these sources are clearly
identified as HMXRBs: four were already known (including three X-ray pulsars)
and one, XMM J005605.8-720012, reported here for the first time. For the
latter, we present optical spectroscopy confirming the association with a Be
star in the SMC. The other sources in our sample have optical counterparts
fainter than magnitude ~16 in the V band, and many of them have possible NIR
counterparts consistent with highly reddened early type stars in the SMC. While
their number is broadly consistent with the expected population of background
highly-absorbed active galactic nuclei, a few of them could be HMXRBs in which

Revisiting the exercise heart rate-music tempo preference relationship
In the present study, we investigated a hypothesized quartic relationship (meaning three inflection points) between exercise heart rate (HR) and preferred music tempo. Initial theoretical predictions suggested a positive linear relationship (Iwanaga, 1995a, 1995b); however, recent experimental work has shown that as exercise HR increases, step changes and plateaus that punctuate the profile of music tempo preference may occur (Karageorghis, Jones, & Stuart, 2008). Tempi bands consisted of slow (95â100 bpm), medium
(115â120 bpm), fast (135â140 bpm), and very fast (155â160 bpm) music. Twenty-eight active undergraduate students cycled at exercise intensities representing 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90% of their maximal HR reserve while their music preference was assessed using a 10-point scale. The Exercise Intensity x Music Tempo interaction was significant, F(6.16, 160.05) = 7.08, p < .001, ηp 2 =.21, as was the test for both cubic and quartic trajectories in the exercise HRâpreferred-music-tempo relationship (p < .001). Whereas slow tempo music was not preferred at any exercise intensity, preference for fast tempo increased, relative to medium and very fast tempo music, as exercise intensity increased. The implications for the prescription of music in exercise and physical activity contexts are discussed
XMMU J0541.8-6659, a new supernova remnant in the Large Magellanic Cloud
The high sensitivity of the XMM-Newton instrumentation offers the opportunity
to study faint and extended sources in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies such
as the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in detail. The ROSAT PSPC survey of the LMC
has revealed more than 700 X-ray sources, among which there are 46 supernova
remnants (SNRs) and candidates. We have observed the field around one of the
most promising SNR candidates in the ROSAT PSPC catalogue, labelled [HP99] 456
with XMM-Newton, to determine its nature. We investigated the XMM-Newton data
along with new radio-continuum, near infrared and optical data. In particular,
spectral and morphological studies of the X-ray and radio data were performed.
The X-ray images obtained in different energy bands reveal two different
structures. Below 1.0 keV the X-ray emission shows the shell-like morphology of
an SNR with a diameter of ~73 pc, one of the largest known in the LMC. For its
thermal spectrum we estimate an electron temperature of (0.49 +/- 0.12)keV
assuming non-equilibrium ionisation. The X-ray images above 1.0 keV reveal a
less extended source within the SNR emission, located ~1' west of the centre of
the SNR and coincident with bright point sources detected in radio-continuum.
This hard component has an extent of 0.9' (i.e. ~13 pc at a distance of ~50
kpc) and a non-thermal spectrum. The hard source coincides in position with the
ROSAT source [HP99] 456 and shows an indication for substructure. We firmly
identify a new SNR in the LMC with a shell-like morphology and a thermal
spectrum. Assuming the SNR to be in the Sedov phase yields an age of ~23 kyr.
We explore possible associations of the hard non-thermal emitting component
with a pulsar wind nebula (PWN) or background active galactic nuclei (AGN).Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and

Subtype-Selective Small Molecule Inhibitors Reveal a Fundamental Role for Nav1.7 in Nociceptor Electrogenesis, Axonal Conduction and Presynaptic Release.
Human genetic studies show that the voltage gated sodium channel 1.7 (Nav1.7) is a key molecular determinant of pain sensation. However, defining the Nav1.7 contribution to nociceptive signalling has been hampered by a lack of selective inhibitors. Here we report two potent and selective arylsulfonamide Nav1.7 inhibitors; PF-05198007 and PF-05089771, which we have used to directly interrogate Nav1.7's role in nociceptor physiology. We report that Nav1.7 is the predominant functional TTX-sensitive Nav in mouse and human nociceptors and contributes to the initiation and the upstroke phase of the nociceptor action potential. Moreover, we confirm a role for Nav1.7 in influencing synaptic transmission in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord as well as peripheral neuropeptide release in the skin. These findings demonstrate multiple contributions of Nav1.7 to nociceptor signalling and shed new light on the relative functional contribution of this channel to peripheral and central noxious signal transmission.The funder provided support in the form of
