Trust and privacy in distributed work groups
Proceedings of the 2nd International Workshop on Social Computing, Behavioral Modeling and PredictionTrust plays an important role in both group cooperation and economic exchange. As new technologies emerge for communication and exchange, established mechanisms of trust are disrupted or distorted, which can lead to the breakdown of cooperation or to increasing fraud in exchange. This paper examines whether and how personal privacy information about members of distributed work groups influences individuals' cooperation and privacy behavior in the group. Specifically, we examine whether people use others' privacy settings as signals of trustworthiness that affect group cooperation. In addition, we examine how individual privacy preferences relate to trustworthy behavior. Understanding how people interact with others in online settings, in particular when they have limited information, has important implications for geographically distributed groups enabled through new information technologies. In addition, understanding how people might use information gleaned from technology usage, such as personal privacy settings, particularly in the absence of other information, has implications for understanding many potential situations that arise in pervasively networked environments.Preprin

Why does early childhood deprivation increase the risk for depression and anxiety in adulthood? A developmental cascade model
Abstract Background: Using data from the English & Romanian Adoptees (ERA) study we recently reported that early time-lmited exposure to severe institutional deprivation is 
associated with early onset and persistent neurodevelopmental problems and later 
onset emotional problems. Here we examine possible reasons for the late 
emergence of emotional problems in this cohort. Our main focus is on testing a 
developmental cascade mediated via the functional impact of early-appearing 
neurodevelopmental problems on late adolescent functioning. We also explore a 
second putative pathway via sensitization to stress.   Methods: The ERA study includes 165 Romanian individuals who spent their early lives in grossly depriving institutions and were subsequently adopted into UK 
families, along with 52 UK adoptees with no history of deprivation. Age six years 
symptoms of neurodevelopmental problems and age 15 anxiety/depression 
symptoms were assessed via parental reports. Young adult symptoms of depression 
and anxiety were assessed by both parent and self-reports; young adults also 
completed measures of stress reactivity , exposure to adverse life events and 
functioning in work and interpersonal relationships. Results: The path between early institutional deprivation and adult emotional problems was mediated via the impact of early neurodevelopmental problems on 
unemployment and poor friendship functioning during the transition to adulthood. 
The findings with regard to early deprivation, later life stress reactivity and emotional 
problems were inconclusive. 
Conclusions:  Our analysis suggests that the risk for adult depression and anxiety following extreme institutional deprivation is explained through the effects of early neurodevelopmental problems on later social and vocational functioning. Future research should more fully examine the role of stress susceptibility in this model
Electrical conduction of silicon oxide containing silicon quantum dots
Current-voltage measurements have been made at room temperature on a Si-rich
silicon oxide film deposited via Electron-Cyclotron Resonance Plasma Enhanced
Chemical Vapor Deposition (ECR-PECVD) and annealed at 750 - 1000C. The
thickness of oxide between Si quantum dots embedded in the film increases with
the increase of annealing temperature. This leads to the decrease of current
density as the annealing temperature is increased. Assuming the Fowler-Nordheim
tunneling mechanism in large electric fields, we obtain an effective barrier
height  of  0.7  0.1 eV for an electron tunnelling
through an oxide layer between Si quantum dots. The Frenkel-Poole effect can
also be used to adequately explain the electrical conduction of the film under
the influence of large electric fields. We suggest that at room temperature Si
quantum dots can be regarded as traps that capture and emit electrons by means

A Guide to Enterotypes across the Human Body: Meta-Analysis of Microbial Community Structures in Human Microbiome Datasets
Recent analyses of human-associated bacterial diversity have categorized individuals into ‘enterotypes’ or clusters based on the abundances of key bacterial genera in the gut microbiota. There is a lack of consensus, however, on the analytical basis for enterotypes and on the interpretation of these results. We tested how the following factors influenced the detection of enterotypes: clustering methodology, distance metrics, OTU-picking approaches, sequencing depth, data type (whole genome shotgun (WGS) vs.16S rRNA gene sequence data), and 16S rRNA region. We included 16S rRNA gene sequences from the Human Microbiome Project (HMP) and from 16 additional studies and WGS sequences from the HMP and MetaHIT. In most body sites, we observed smooth abundance gradients of key genera without discrete clustering of samples. Some body habitats displayed bimodal (e.g., gut) or multimodal (e.g., vagina) distributions of sample abundances, but not all clustering methods and workflows accurately highlight such clusters. Because identifying enterotypes in datasets depends not only on the structure of the data but is also sensitive to the methods applied to identifying clustering strength, we recommend that multiple approaches be used and compared when testing for enterotypes
Probing energy transfer in an ensemble of silicon nanocrystals
Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements of silicon nanocrystals formed by ion implantation of silicon into silicon dioxide reveal multi-exponential luminescence decays. Three discrete time components are apparent in the rise and decay data, which we associate with different classes of nanocrystals. The values of decay time are remarkably constant with emission energy, but the relative contributions of the three components vary strongly across the luminescence band. In keeping with the quantum confinement model for luminescence, we assign emission at high energies to small nanocrystals and that at low energies to large nanocrystals. By deconvolving the decay data over the full emission band, it is possible to study the migration of excitation from smaller (luminescence donor) to larger (luminescence acceptor) nanocrystals. We propose a model of diffusion of excitation between neighboring nanocrystals, with long lifetime emission being from the largest nanocrystal in the local neighborhood. Our data also allow us to study the saturation of acceptor nanocrystals, effectively switching off excitation transfer, and Auger recombination in non-interacting nanocrystals. A novel HLA-B18 restricted CD8+ T cell epitope is efficiently cross-presented by dendritic cells from soluble tumor antigen
NY-ESO-1 has been a major target of many immunotherapy trials because it is expressed by various cancers and is highly immunogenic. In this study, we have identified a novel HLA-B*1801-restricted CD8<sup>+</sup>T cell epitope, NY-ESO-1<sub>88–96</sub> (LEFYLAMPF) and compared its direct- and cross-presentation to that of the reported NY-ESO-1<sub>157–165</sub> epitope restricted to HLA-A*0201. Although both epitopes were readily cross-presented by DCs exposed to various forms of full-length NY-ESO-1 antigen, remarkably NY-ESO-1<sub>88–96</sub> is much more efficiently cross-presented from the soluble form, than NY-ESO-1<sub>157–165</sub>. On the other hand, NY-ESO-1<sub>157–165</sub> is efficiently presented by NY-ESO-1-expressing tumor cells and its presentation was not enhanced by IFN-γ treatment, which induced immunoproteasome as demonstrated by Western blots and functionally a decreased presentation of Melan A<sub>26–35</sub>; whereas NY-ESO-1<sub>88–96</sub> was very inefficiently presented by the same tumor cell lines, except for one that expressed high level of immunoproteasome. It was only presented when the tumor cells were first IFN-γ treated, followed by infection with recombinant vaccinia virus encoding NY-ESO-1, which dramatically increased NY-ESO-1 expression. These data indicate that the presentation of NY-ESO-1<sub>88–96</sub> is immunoproteasome dependent. Furthermore, a survey was conducted on multiple samples collected from HLA-B18+ melanoma patients. Surprisingly, all the detectable responses to NY-ESO-1<sub>88–96</sub> from patients, including those who received NY-ESO-1 ISCOMATRIX™ vaccine were induced spontaneously. Taken together, these results imply that some epitopes can be inefficiently presented by tumor cells although the corresponding CD8<sup>+</sup>T cell responses are efficiently primed in vivo by DCs cross-presenting these epitopes. The potential implications for cancer vaccine strategies are further discussed
Organization theory and military metaphor: time for a reappraisal?
A ‘conventional’ use of military metaphor would use it to convey attributes such as hierarchical organization, vertical communication and limited autonomy. This is often used in contrast to a looser form of organization based on the metaphor of the network. However, this article argues that military practice is more complex, with examples of considerable autonomy within the constraints of central direction. It is suggested that not only might this be a more useful metaphor for many contemporary organizations, but also that simplistic uses of military metaphor divert our attention away from the functions that management hierarchies play. The discussion is embedded within a critical realist account of metaphor, arguing for both its value and the need for its further development
Atomic scale investigation of Cr precipitation in copper
The early stage of the chromium precipitation in copper was analyzed at the
atomic scale by Atom Probe Tomography (APT). Quantitative data about the
precipitate size, 3D shape, density, composition and volume fraction were
obtained in a Cu-1Cr-0.1Zr (wt.%) commercial alloy aged at 713K. Surprisingly,
nanoscaled precipitates exhibit various shapes (spherical, plates and
ellipsoid) and contain a large amount of Cu (up to 50%), in contradiction with
the equilibrium Cu-Cr phase diagram. APT data also show that some impurities
(Fe) may segregate along Cu/Cr interfaces. The concomitant evolution of the
precipitate shape and composition as a function of the aging time is discussed.
A special emphasis is given on the competition between interfacial and elastic
energy and on the role of Fe segregation
Triplet exciton diffusion and phosphorescence quenching in Iridium(III)-Centered dendrimers
A study of triplet-triplet exciton annihilation and nonradiative decay in films of iridium(III)-centered phosphorescent dendrimers is reported. The average separation of the chromophore was tuned by the molecular structure and also by blending with a host material. It was found that triplet exciton hopping is controlled by electron exchange interactions and can be over 600 times faster than phosphorescence quenching. Nonradiative decay occurs by weak dipole-dipole interactions and is independent of exciton diffusion, except in very thin films 
The golden circle: A way of arguing and acting about technology in the London ambulance service
This paper analyses the way in which the London Ambulance Service recovered from the events of October 1992, when it implemented a computer-aided despatch system (LASCAD) that remained in service for less than two weeks. It examines the enactment of a programme of long-term organizational change, focusing on the implementation of an alternative computer system in 1996. The analysis in this paper is informed by actor-network theory, both by an early statement of this approach developed by Callon in the sociology of translation, and also by concepts and ideas from Latour’s more recent restatement of his own position. The paper examines how alternative interests emerged and were stabilized over time, in a way of arguing and acting among key players in the change programme, christened the Golden Circle. The story traces four years in the history of the London Ambulance Service, from the aftermath of October 1992 through the birth of the Golden Circle to the achievement of National Health Service (NHS) trust status. LASCAD was the beginning of the story, this is the middle, an end lies in the future, when the remaining elements of the change programme are enacted beyond the Golden Circle
