    The role of elasticity in slab bending

    International audiencePrevious studies showed that plate rheology exerts a dominant control on the shape and velocity of subducting plates. Here, we perform a systematic investigation of the role of elasticity in slab bending, using fully dynamic 2-D models where an elastic, viscoelastic, or viscoelastoplastic plate subducts freely into a purely viscous mantle. We derive a scaling relationship between the bending radius of viscoelastic slabs and the Deborah number, De, which is the ratio of Maxwell time over deformation time. We show that De controls the ratio of elastically stored energy over viscously dissipated energy and find that at De>10-2, substantially less energy is required to bend a viscoelastic slab to the same shape as a purely viscous slab with the same intrinsic viscosity. Elastically stored energy at higher De favors retreating modes of subduction via unbending, while trench advance only occurs for some cases with De 1, where most zones have low De 0.1. Slabs with De<10-2 either have very low viscosities or they may be yielding, in which case our De estimates may be underestimated by up to an order of magnitude, potentially pointing towards a significant role of elasticity in ∼60% of the subduction zones. In support of such a role of elasticity in subduction, we find that increasing De correlates with increasing proportion of larger seismic events in both instrumental and historic catalogues

    Thermochemical interpretation of one-dimensional seismic reference models for the upper mantle: Evidence for bias due to heterogeneity

    A 1-D reference model for the mantle that is physically meaningful would be invaluable both in geodynamic modelling and for an accurate interpretation of 3-D seismic tomography. However, previous studies have shown that it is difficult to reconcile the simplest possible 1-D physical model—1300°C adiabatic pyrolite—with seismic observations. We therefore generate a set of alternative 1-D thermal and chemical mantle models, down to 900 km depth, and compare their properties with seismic data. We use several different body and surface wave data sets that provide complementary constraints on mantle structure. To assess the agreement between our models and seismic data, we take into account the large uncertainties in both the elastic/anelastic parameters of the constituent minerals, and the thermodynamic procedures for calculating seismic velocities. These uncertainties translate into substantial differences in seismic structure. However, in spite of such differences, subtle trends remain. We find that models which attain (1) higher velocity gradients between 250 and 350 km; (2) higher velocity gradients in the lower transition zone; and (3) higher average velocities immediately beneath the 660-discontinuity, than 1300°C adiabatic pyrolite—either via a temporary shift to lower temperatures, and/or a change to a seismically faster chemical composition—provide a significantly better fit to the seismic data than adiabatic pyrolite. This is compatible with recent thermochemical dynamic models by Tackley et al. in which average thermal structure is smooth and monotonous, but average chemical structure deviates substantially from pyrolite above, in, and below the transition zone. Our results suggest that 1-D seismic reference models are being systematically biased by a complex 3-D chemical structure. This bias should be taken into account when attempting quantitative interpretation of seismic anomalies, since those very anomalies contribute to the 1-D average signa

    A common genetic target for environmental and heritable influences on aggressiveness in Drosophila

    Environmental and genetic factors can modulate aggressiveness, but the biological mechanisms underlying their influence are largely unknown. Social experience with conspecifics suppresses aggressiveness in both vertebrate and invertebrate species, including Drosophila. We searched for genes whose expression levels correlate with the influence of social experience on aggressiveness in Drosophila by performing microarray analysis of head tissue from socially isolated (aggressive) vs. socially experienced (nonaggressive) male flies. Among {approx}200 differentially expressed genes, only one was also present in a gene set previously identified by profiling Drosophila strains subjected to genetic selection for differences in aggressiveness [Dierick HA, Greenspan RJ (2006) Nat Genet 38:1023–1031]. This gene, Cyp6a20, encodes a cytochrome P450. Social experience increased Cyp6a20 expression and decreased aggressiveness in a reversible manner. In Cyp6a20 mutants, aggressiveness was increased in group-housed but not socially isolated flies. These data identify a common genetic target for environmental and heritable influences on aggressiveness. Cyp6a20 is expressed in a subset of nonneuronal support cells associated with pheromone-sensing olfactory sensilla, suggesting that social experience may influence aggressiveness by regulating pheromone sensitivity

    Identificação e diversidade de bactérias promotoras do crescimento vegetal associadas ao girassol.

    Estudos de associações entre microrganismos promotores do crescimento em plantas apresentam um enorme potencial devido aos benefícios dados sobre a produtividade. A crescente importância econômica da cultura do girassol, bem como a necessidade de cultivá-lo em diversos ambientes, torna interessante o estudo da sua interação com Bactérias Promotoras do Crescimento Vegetal (BPCV) que possam ser utilizadas sob diferentes condições de solo. No presente trabalho foram utilizadas a técnica seqüenciamento do gene 16S RNAr e de RAPD para o posicionamento filogenético e a determinação da diversidade genotípica de bactérias promotoras do crescimento vegetal associadas à cultura do girassol. Os isolados foram obtidos de amostras da rizosfera, raiz, capítulo e colmo de duas cultivares girassol: Hélio 251 e Aguará 3. A extração de DNA foi realizada utilizando fenol-clorofórmio-álcool isoamílico e a amplificação das seqüências 16S RNAr dos isolados foi realizada com os iniciadores 27F e 778R, e submetidas ao sequenciamento em seqüenciador automático MegaBace 1000. Marcadores moleculares de RAPD foram obtidos para cada BPCV pelo uso dos iniciadores P2, P3, M13 e 1254, o os perfis polimórficos foram utilizados para a construção de um dendrograma de similaridade pelo método UPGMA a partir do coeficiente de similaridade de Jaccard. As sequências do gene 16S RNAr obtidas foram submetidas a uma análise filogenética hierárquica utilizando o software RDP-classifier para derterminação dos prováveis gêneros. As seqüências também foram submetidas a uma análise filogenética por inferência bayesiana utilizando espécies-tipo dos gêneros identificados, para identificação das espécies mais prováveis. A análise da diversidade destes isolados por marcadores RAPD permitiu identificar 13 clusters a 85% de similaridade, sendo possível identificar o agrupamento de isolados com relação ao genótipo e ao tecido vegetal de origem. A análise filogenética permitiu posicionar 42 isolados dentro do gênero Bacillus, compreendendo as espécies B. subtilis, B. amyloliquefaciens, B. cereus, B. thuringiensis, B. pumilus e B. megaterium. Somente 3 isolados foram classificados fora do gênero Bacillus, sendo posicionados no gênero Methylobacterium e relacionados à espécie M. komagatae.Resumo, 1928-1

    Whole-genome association analysis of treatment response in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

    Up to 30% of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) exhibit an inadequate response to serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs). To date, genetic predictors of OCD treatment response have not been systematically investigated using genome-wide association study (GWAS). To identify specific genetic variations potentially influencing SRI response, we conducted a GWAS study in 804 OCD patients with information on SRI response. SRI response was classified as 'response' (n=514) or 'non-response' (n=290), based on self-report. We used the more powerful Quasi-Likelihood Score Test (the MQLS test) to conduct a genome-wide association test correcting for relatedness, and then used an adjusted logistic model to evaluate the effect size of the variants in probands. The top single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) was rs17162912 (P=1.76 × 10(-8)), which is near the DISP1 gene on 1q41-q42, a microdeletion region implicated in neurological development. The other six SNPs showing suggestive evidence of association (P&lt;10(-5)) were rs9303380, rs12437601, rs16988159, rs7676822, rs1911877 and rs723815. Among them, two SNPs in strong linkage disequilibrium, rs7676822 and rs1911877, located near the PCDH10 gene, gave P-values of 2.86 × 10(-6) and 8.41 × 10(-6), respectively. The other 35 variations with signals of potential significance (P&lt;10(-4)) involve multiple genes expressed in the brain, including GRIN2B, PCDH10 and GPC6. Our enrichment analysis indicated suggestive roles of genes in the glutamatergic neurotransmission system (false discovery rate (FDR)=0.0097) and the serotonergic system (FDR=0.0213). Although the results presented may provide new insights into genetic mechanisms underlying treatment response in OCD, studies with larger sample sizes and detailed information on drug dosage and treatment duration are needed

    CASSIS: The Cornell Atlas of Spitzer/Infrared Spectrograph Sources. II. High-resolution observations

    The Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on board the Spitzer Space Telescope observed about 15,000 objects during the cryogenic mission lifetime. Observations provided low-resolution (R~60-127) spectra over ~5-38um and high-resolution (R~600) spectra over ~10-37um. The Cornell Atlas of Spitzer/IRS Sources (CASSIS) was created to provide publishable quality spectra to the community. Low-resolution spectra have been available in CASSIS since 2011, and we present here the addition of the high-resolution spectra. The high-resolution observations represent approximately one third of all staring observations performed with the IRS instrument. While low-resolution observations are adapted to faint objects and/or broad spectral features (e.g., dust continuum, molecular bands), high-resolution observations allow more accurate measurements of narrow features (e.g., ionic emission lines) as well as a better sampling of the spectral profile of various features. Given the narrow aperture of the two high-resolution modules, cosmic ray hits and spurious features usually plague the spectra. Our pipeline is designed to minimize these effects through various improvements. A super sampled point-spread function was created in order to enable the optimal extraction in addition to the full aperture extraction. The pipeline selects the best extraction method based on the spatial extent of the object. For unresolved sources, the optimal extraction provides a significant improvement in signal-to-noise ratio over a full aperture extraction. We have developed several techniques for optimal extraction, including a differential method that eliminates low-level rogue pixels (even when no dedicated background observation was performed). The updated CASSIS repository now includes all the spectra ever taken by the IRS, with the exception of mapping observations

    This paper argues for the important role of customers as a source of competitive advantage and firm growth, an issue which has been largely neglected in the resource-based view of the firm. It conceptualizes Penrose’s (1959) notion of an ‘inside track’ and illustrates how in-depth knowledge about established customers combines with joint problem-solving activities and the rapid assimilation of new and previously unexploited skills and resources. It is suggested that the inside track represents a distinct and perhaps underestimated way of generating rents and securing long-term growth. This also implies that the sources of sustainable competitive advantage in important respects can be sought in idiosyncratic interfirm relationships rather than within the firm itself
