VEGAS: A VST Early-type GAlaxy Survey. II. Photometric study of giant ellipticals and their stellar halos
Observations of diffuse starlight in the outskirts of galaxies are thought to
be a fundamental source of constraints on the cosmological context of galaxy
assembly in the CDM model. Such observations are not trivial because
of the extreme faintness of such regions. In this work, we investigate the
photometric properties of six massive early type galaxies (ETGs) in the VEGAS
sample (NGC 1399, NGC 3923, NGC 4365, NGC 4472, NGC 5044, and NGC 5846) out to
extremely low surface brightness levels, with the goal of characterizing the
global structure of their light profiles for comparison to state-of-the-art
galaxy formation models. We carry out deep and detailed photometric mapping of
our ETG sample taking advantage of deep imaging with VST/OmegaCAM in the g and
i bands. By fitting the light profiles, and comparing the results to
simulations of elliptical galaxy assembly, we identify signatures of a
transition between "relaxed" and "unrelaxed" accreted components and can
constrain the balance between in situ and accreted stars. The very good
agreement of our results with predictions from theoretical simulations
demonstrates that the full VEGAS sample of ETGs will allow us to use
the distribution of diffuse light as a robust statistical probe of the
hierarchical assembly of massive galaxies.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic
Optimal Utility of H-Reflex RDD as a Biomarker of Spinal Disinhibition in Painful and Painless Diabetic Neuropathy

However, the optimum stimulus-response parameters that identify patients with spinal disinhibition are currently unknown. We systematically compared HRDD, performed using trains of 10 stimuli at five stimulation frequencies (0.3, 0.5, 1, 2 and 3 Hz), in 42 subjects with painful and 62 subjects with painless diabetic neuropathy with comparable neuropathy severity, and 34 healthy controls. HRDD was calculated using individual and mean responses compared to the initial response. At stimulation frequencies of 1, 2 and 3 Hz, HRDD was significantly impaired in patients with painful diabetic neuropathy compared to patients with painless diabetic neuropathy for all parameters and for most parameters when compared to healthy controls. HRDD was significantly enhanced in patients with painless diabetic neuropathy compared to controls for responses towards the end of the 1 Hz stimulation train. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis in patients with and without pain showed that the area under the curve was greatest for response averages of stimuli 2–4 and 2–5 at 1 Hz, AUC = 0.84 (95%CI 0.76–0.92). Trains of 5 stimuli delivered at 1 Hz can segregate patients with painful diabetic neuropathy and spinal disinhibition, whereas longer stimulus trains are required to segregate patients with painless diabetic neuropathy and enhanced spinal inhibition
Implementing an ict-based polypharmacy management program in Italy
Although there is evidence of a growing
awareness of the problem, no official policy statements or
regulatory guidelines on polypharmacy have been released
up to date by Italian Health Authorities. Medication
review, application of appropriateness criteria and
computerized prescription support systems are all possible
approaches in order to improve the quality of prescribing
in older persons. More focused training courses on
multimorbidity and polytherapy management are
encouraged. Furthermore a multidisciplinary approach
integrating different health care professionals (physicians,
pharmacists, and nurses) may positively impact on
reducing the sense of fear related to discontinue or
substitute drugs prescribed by others; the fragmentation of
therapy among different specialists; reducing costs; and
improving adverse drug reaction detection and reporting.
Aiming at achieving the individualized pharmacotherapy,
a multidisciplinary approach starting with identification of
patients and risk for drug-related problems, followed by
medication review overtime and use of inappropriateness
criteria, supported by computerized systems has been
proposed
Measurement of gravitational and thermal effects in a liquid-actuated torsion pendulum
We describe a proof-of-principle experiment aiming to investigate the inverse-square law of gravitation at the centimeter scale. The sensor is a two-stage torsion pendulum, while actuation is accomplished by a variable liquid mass. The time-varying gravitational force is related to the level of the circulating fluid in one or two containers at a short distance from the test mass, with all moving mechanical parts positioned at a large distance. We provide a description of the apparatus and present the first results. We identified a systematic effect of thermal origin, producing offsets of few fNm in torque and of about 10 pN in force. When this effect is neutralized, the measurements agree well with the predictions of simulations. We also discuss the upcoming instrument upgradations and the expected sensitivity improvement that will allow us to perform measurements with adequate accuracy to investigate the unexplored regions of the α−λ parameter space of a Yukawa-like deviation from the Newtonian potential

Search for high-mass diphoton states and limits on Randall-Sundrum gravitons at CDF
We have performed a search for new particles which decay to two photons using 1.2 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity from p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV collected using the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We find the diphoton mass spectrum to be in agreement with the standard model expectation, and set limits on the cross section times branching ratio for the Randall-Sundrum graviton, as a function of diphoton mass. We subsequently derive lower limits for the graviton mass of 230 GeV/c(2) and 850 GeV/c(2), at the 95% confidence level, for coupling parameters (k=(M) over barP(1)) of 0.01 and 0.1, respectively
Measurement of the tt¯tt¯ production cross section in pp collisions at √s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
A measurement of four-top-quark production using proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1 is presented. Events are selected if they contain a single lepton (electron or muon) or an opposite-sign lepton pair, in association with multiple jets. The events are categorised according to the number of jets and how likely these are to contain b-hadrons. A multivariate technique is then used to discriminate between signal and background events. The measured four-top-quark production cross section is found to be 26+17−15 fb, with a corresponding observed (expected) significance of 1.9 (1.0) standard deviations over the background-only hypothesis. The result is combined with the previous measurement performed by the ATLAS Collaboration in the multilepton final state. The combined four-top-quark production cross section is measured to be 24+7−6 fb, with a corresponding observed (expected) signal significance of 4.7 (2.6) standard deviations over the background-only predictions. It is consistent within 2.0 standard deviations with the Standard Model expectation of 12.0 ± 2.4 fb
Measurements of Higgs bosons decaying to bottom quarks from vector boson fusion production with the ATLAS experiment at √=13TeV
The paper presents a measurement of the Standard Model Higgs Boson decaying to b-quark pairs in the vector boson fusion (VBF) production mode. A sample corresponding to 126 fb−1 of s√=13TeV proton–proton collision data, collected with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, is analyzed utilizing an adversarial neural network for event classification. The signal strength, defined as the ratio of the measured signal yield to that predicted by the Standard Model for VBF Higgs production, is measured to be 0.95+0.38−0.36 , corresponding to an observed (expected) significance of 2.6 (2.8) standard deviations from the background only hypothesis. The results are additionally combined with an analysis of Higgs bosons decaying to b-quarks, produced via VBF in association with a photon
Measurement and interpretation of same-sign W boson pair production in association with two jets in pp collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
This paper presents the measurement of fducial and diferential cross sections for both the inclusive and electroweak production of a same-sign W-boson pair in association with two jets (W±W±jj) using 139 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis is performed by selecting two same-charge leptons, electron or muon, and at least two jets with large invariant mass and a large rapidity diference. The measured fducial cross sections for electroweak and inclusive W±W±jj production are 2.92 ± 0.22 (stat.) ± 0.19 (syst.)fb and 3.38±0.22 (stat.)±0.19 (syst.)fb, respectively, in agreement with Standard Model predictions. The measurements are used to constrain anomalous quartic gauge couplings by extracting 95% confdence level intervals on dimension-8 operators. A search for doubly charged Higgs bosons H±± that are produced in vector-boson fusion processes and decay into a same-sign W boson pair is performed. The largest deviation from the Standard Model occurs for an H±± mass near 450 GeV, with a global signifcance of 2.5 standard deviations
Studies of new Higgs boson interactions through nonresonant HH production in the b¯bγγ fnal state in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
A search for nonresonant Higgs boson pair production in the b
¯bγγ fnal state
is performed using 140 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV
recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. This analysis supersedes
and expands upon the previous nonresonant ATLAS results in this fnal state based on the
same data sample. The analysis strategy is optimised to probe anomalous values not only of
the Higgs (H) boson self-coupling modifer κλ but also of the quartic HHV V (V = W, Z)
coupling modifer κ2V . No signifcant excess above the expected background from Standard
Model processes is observed. An observed upper limit µHH < 4.0 is set at 95% confdence
level on the Higgs boson pair production cross-section normalised to its Standard Model
prediction. The 95% confdence intervals for the coupling modifers are −1.4 < κλ < 6.9 and
−0.5 < κ2V < 2.7, assuming all other Higgs boson couplings except the one under study are
fxed to the Standard Model predictions. The results are interpreted in the Standard Model
efective feld theory and Higgs efective feld theory frameworks in terms of constraints on
the couplings of anomalous Higgs boson (self-)interactions
