    Less Minimal Flavour Violation

    We consider the approximate U(2)^3 flavour symmetry exhibited by the quark sector of the Standard Model and all its possible breaking terms appearing in the quark Yukawa couplings. Taking an Effective Field Theory point of view, we determine the current bounds on these parameters, assumed to control the breaking of flavour in a generic extension of the Standard Model at a reference scale Lambda. In particular, a significant bound from epsilon'/epsilon is derived, which is relevant to Minimal Flavour Violation as well. In the up-quark sector, the recently observed CP violation in D -> pi+ pi-, K+ K- decays might be accounted for in this generic framework, consistently with any other constraint.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figur

    Gauged flavour symmetry for the light generations

    We study the phenomenology of a model where an SU(2)^3 flavour symmetry acting on the first two generation quarks is gauged and Yukawa couplings for the light generations are generated by a see-saw mechanism involving heavy fermions needed to cancel flavour-gauge anomalies. We find that, in constrast to the SU(3)^3 case studied in the literature, most of the constraints related to the third generation, like electroweak precision bounds or B physics observables, can be evaded, while characteristic collider signatures are predicted.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figure

    Flavour physics from an approximate U(2)^3 symmetry

    The quark sector of the Standard Model exhibits an approximate U(2)^3 flavour symmetry. This symmetry, broken in specific directions dictated by minimality, can explain the success of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa picture of flavour mixing and CP violation, confirmed by the data so far, while allowing for observable deviations from it, as expected in most models of ElectroWeak Symmetry Breaking. Building on previous work in the specific context of supersymmetry, we analyze the expected effects and we quantify the current bounds in a general Effective Field Theory framework. As a further relevant example we then show how the U(2)^3 symmetry and its breaking can be implemented in a generic composite Higgs model and we make a first analysis of its peculiar consequences. We also discuss how some partial extension of U(2)^3 to the lepton sector can arise, both in general and in composite Higgs models. An optimistic though conceivable interpretation of the considerations developed in this paper gives reasons to think that new physics searches in the flavour sector may be about to explore an interesting realm of phenomena.Comment: 29 pages, 5 figure

    Developing a class solution for Prostate Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR) using Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT)

    Background and purpose To develop a class solution for prostate Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR) using Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT). Materials and methods Seven datasets were used to compare plans using one 360° arc (1FA), one 210° arc (1PA), two full arcs and two partial arcs. Subsequently using 1PA, fifteen datasets were compared using (i) 6 mm CTV–PTV margins, (ii) 8 mm CTV–PTV margins and (iii) including the proximal SV within the CTV. Monaco™ 3.2 (Elekta™) was used for planning with the Agility™ MLC system (Elekta™). Results Highly conformal plans were produced using all four arc arrangements. Compared to 1FA, 1PA resulted in significantly reduced rectal doses, and monitor units and estimated delivery times were reduced in six of seven cases. Using 6 mm CTV–PTV margins, planning constraints were met for all fifteen datasets. Using 8 mm margins required relaxation of the uppermost bladder constraint in three cases to achieve adequate coverage, and, compared to 6 mm margins, rectal and bladder doses significantly increased. Including the proximal SV required relaxation of the uppermost bladder and rectal constraints in two cases, and rectal and bladder doses significantly increased. Conclusions Prostate SABR VMAT is optimal using 1PA. 6 mm CTV–PTV margins, compatible with daily fiducial-based IGRT, are consistently feasible in terms of target objectives and OAR constraints

    Model-independent constraints on new physics in b --> s transitions

    We provide a comprehensive model-independent analysis of rare decays involving the b --> s transition to put constraints on dimension-six Delta(F)=1 effective operators. The constraints are derived from all the available up-to-date experimental data from the B-factories, CDF and LHCb. The implications and future prospects for observables in b --> s l+l- and b --> s nu nu transitions in view of improved measurements are also investigated.     Draft genome sequence of strain HIMB100, a cultured representative of the SAR116 clade of marine Alphaproteobacteria

    Strain HIMB100 is a planktonic marine bacterium in the class Alphaproteobacteria. This strain is of interest because it is one of the first known isolates from a globally ubiquitous clade of marine bacteria known as SAR116 within the family Rhodospirillaceae. Here we describe preliminary features of the organism, together with the draft genome sequence and annotation. This is the second genome sequence of a member of the SAR116 clade. The 2,458,945 bp genome contains 2,334 protein-coding and 42 RNA genes

    First evidence of direct CP violation in charmless two-body decays of Bs mesons

    Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.35 fb1\mathrm{fb}^{-1} collected by LHCb in 2011, we report the first evidence of CP violation in the decays of Bs0B^0_s mesons to K±πK^\pm \pi^\mp pairs, ACP(Bs0Kπ)=0.27±0.08(stat)±0.02(syst)A_{CP}(B^0_s \rightarrow K \pi)=0.27 \pm 0.08\,\mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.02\,\mathrm{(syst)}, with a significance of 3.3σ\sigma. Furthermore, we report the first observation of CP violation in B0B^0 decays at a hadron collider, ACP(B0Kπ)=0.088±0.011(stat)±0.008(syst)A_{CP}(B^0 \rightarrow K\pi)=-0.088 \pm 0.011\,\mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.008\,\mathrm{(syst)}, with a significance exceeding 6σ\sigma.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables; v2 with minor changes after journal revie

    Measurement of charged particle multiplicities in pppp collisions at s=7{\sqrt{s} =7}TeV in the forward region

    The charged particle production in proton-proton collisions is studied with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of s=7{\sqrt{s} =7}TeV in different intervals of pseudorapidity η\eta. The charged particles are reconstructed close to the interaction region in the vertex detector, which provides high reconstruction efficiency in the η\eta ranges 2.5<η<2.0-2.5<\eta<-2.0 and 2.0<η<4.52.0<\eta<4.5. The data were taken with a minimum bias trigger, only requiring one or more reconstructed tracks in the vertex detector. By selecting an event sample with at least one track with a transverse momentum greater than 1 GeV/c a hard QCD subsample is investigated. Several event generators are compared with the data; none are able to describe fully the multiplicity distributions or the charged particle density distribution as a function of η\eta. In general, the models underestimate the charged particle production

    Study of B0(s)→K0Sh+h′− decays with first observation of B0s→K0SK±π∓ and B0s→K0Sπ+π−

    A search for charmless three-body decays of B 0 and B0s mesons with a K0S meson in the final state is performed using the pp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV recorded by the LHCb experiment. Branching fractions of the B0(s)→K0Sh+h′− decay modes (h (′) = π, K), relative to the well measured B0→K0Sπ+π− decay, are obtained. First observation of the decay modes B0s→K0SK±π∓ and B0s→K0Sπ+π− and confirmation of the decay B0→K0SK±π∓ are reported. The following relative branching fraction measurements or limits are obtained B(B0→K0SK±π∓)B(B0→K0Sπ+π−)=0.128±0.017(stat.)±0.009(syst.), B(B0→K0SK+K−)B(B0→K0Sπ+π−)=0.385±0.031(stat.)±0.023(syst.), B(B0s→K0Sπ+π−)B(B0→K0Sπ+π−)=0.29±0.06(stat.)±0.03(syst.)±0.02(fs/fd), B(B0s→K0SK±π∓)B(B0→K0Sπ+π−)=1.48±0.12(stat.)±0.08(syst.)±0.12(fs/fd)B(B0s→K0SK+K−)B(B0→K0Sπ+π−)∈[0.004;0.068]at90%CL

    Observation of associated production of a ZZ boson with a DD meson in the~forward region

    A search for associated production of a ZZ boson with an open charm meson is presented using a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb1.0\,\mathrm{fb}^{-`} of proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7\,TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment. %% Seven candidate events for associated production of a ZZ boson with a D0D^0 meson and four candidate events for a ZZ boson with a D+D^+ meson are observed with a combined significance of 5.1standard deviations. The production cross-sections in the forward region are measured to be σZμ+μ ⁣,D0=2.50±1.12±0.22pb\sigma_{Z\rightarrow\mu^+\mu^-\!,D^0} = 2.50\pm1.12\pm0.22pb σZμ+μ ⁣,D+=0.44±0.23±0.03pb,\sigma_{Z\rightarrow\mu^+\mu^-\!,D^+} = 0.44\pm0.23\pm0.03pb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.Comment: 18 pages, 2 figure
