The tourism sector has been presented as one of the most important sectors of diverse economies due to its capacity to contribute to economic growth and job creation. Being an industry of people, it directly depends on the performance of activities, skills, professionalism, quality and competitiveness, so it is essential to answer with precise planning politics which should be the most approximated ones to the real needs of the sector. In Portugal, the tourism sector continues to reinforce its importance in society and in the national economy since it remains the main exporting economic sector. On the other hand, the main challenge of this sector is qualifying and increasing the level of qualification of its workers due to their inadequate level of qualification, since 50% of the employed population in this sector has a primary education level. Therefore, it has defined, in its public policies, the goal of duplicating, in the next decade, the number of employees with high school education qualifications. In this sense, once skills are becoming the global currency of the 21st century, this study aims to feature the main soft skills that touristic human resources should hold, based on the importance given to them by the national entrepreneurs of the sector. This study is based on a sample of 555 answers and used a qualitative methodology throughout a profound review of the literature as well as a quantitative methodology where an online survey was implemented, expecting to develop the ideal profile of the tourism human resources. The results of the study suggest that the profile of human resources in the tourism sector should include skills such as teamwork, knowledge of market trends, ability to conduct efficient strategic processes and decisions, as well as language skills, sales skills and digital communication.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The economic crisis, the need for new skills and the demographic changes have contributed to the recognition that the learning strategies of adults and lifelong learning must play a key role in the policies of competitiveness and employability, social inclusion and active citizenship. Skills will determine competitiveness and will play a crucial and essential role in social cohesion through economic growth and job creation, thus intensifying the need for continuous improvement of skills to meet the growing needs of the labour market in knowledge-based economies (European Commission, 2017; World Economic Forum, 2018).European Investment Funds, FEDER funds through COMPETE 2020: POCI-01-0145-FEDER-023622; National Funds, Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT): SAICTPOL/23622/2016.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The environmental benefits arising from the interaction between matter and energy flows of permacultural systems accelerate the recovery processes of degraded areas, which can be potentiated by the increase of plant biomass associated with the green manure technique, proposed in this work for the study territory: the surroundings of two Conservation Units (UC), of the Private Reserve of Natural Heritage (RPPN) type, the RPPN Águas Claras I and II. The RPPN Águas Claras I and II are located in the Macabu River basin, a microbasin of the Carukango River. The objective of this study was to analyze areas submitted to reforestation and agroforestry system (SAF) projects, through estimates of local biomass obtained with the aid of secondary data from the UCs’ forest inventory. As a result, it was possible to list Ficus sp and Sparattosperma leucanthum as priority native species for forest restoration. It was concluded that it is necessary to consort the two species with the planting of species considered green manures, in order to increase forest biomass and stimulate the improvement of soil conditions in the degraded portion of the reserve. This strategy can accelerate the regeneration process, as indicated by secondary soil analysis data using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), performed in the area of implementation of the SAF

Nutritional intervention should be performed early, requiring careful follow-up of these patients. Objectives: To compare the nutritional assessment of cirrhotic pediatric patients performed in two separate periods of time. Methods: This research used two different databases originated from studies conducted with pediatric patients with cirrhosis. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 67 children and adolescents were assessed in two series of tests performed within a time range of approximately a decade. Both series had standard deviation score for height-for-age (SDS-H/A), standard deviation score for triceps skinfold-for-age and (SDS-TSF/A), calculated according to the standards established by the World Health Organization. Disease severity was evaluated by the Pediatric End-stage Liver Disease (PELD)/Model for End-stage Liver Disease (MELD) and by the Child-Pugh score. Results were considered significant at p < 0.05. Results: The present study did not find any statistically significant difference for the nutritional status of the researched subjects in any of the series. In the first series, 22.6% of patients were undernourished, compared to 27.8% in the second one (p = 0.955). Conclusions: We can conclude that in both series of tests conducted with an interval of about a decade from each other the percentage of malnutrition and the severity of cirrhosis remained stable

The complete genome sequence of Chromobacterium violaceum reveals remarkable and exploitable bacterial adaptability

    Get PDF
Chromobacterium violaceum is one of millions of species of free-living microorganisms that populate the soil and water in the extant areas of tropical biodiversity around the world. Its complete genome sequence reveals (i) extensive alternative pathways for energy generation, (ii) ≈500 ORFs for transport-related proteins, (iii) complex and extensive systems for stress adaptation and motility, and (iv) wide-spread utilization of quorum sensing for control of inducible systems, all of which underpin the versatility and adaptability of the organism. The genome also contains extensive but incomplete arrays of ORFs coding for proteins associated with mammalian pathogenicity, possibly involved in the occasional but often fatal cases of human C. violaceum infection. There is, in addition, a series of previously unknown but important enzymes and secondary metabolites including paraquat-inducible proteins, drug and heavy-metal-resistance proteins, multiple chitinases, and proteins for the detoxification of xenobiotics that may have biotechnological applications

Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil: setting the baseline knowledge on the animal diversity in Brazil

The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others
