    Potential Phytoplankton Productivity of Three Iowa Streams

    A series of experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that the concentrations of suspended algal populations in central Iowa streams are not limited by nutrient concentrations. River water samples with their natural plankton populations were collected from the Des Moines River, Skunk River, and Squaw Creek and were cultured under controlled conditions without the addition of nutrients. In 23 of 24 experiments significant increases in algal chlorophyll a were found with an average replication factor of 14 times. The data indicate that nutrients are not limiting suspended algal densities in the streams. A second series of experiments indicated that nitrate concentrations of up to 20 mg/I nitrate-nitrogen did not inhibit algal growth in these river waters

    The distribution of estuarine fish larvae: nutritional condition and co-occurrence with predators and prey

    Fish larvae were collected monthly between March and September 1997 in the Mira and Guadiana estuaries (southern Portugal). Hydrological parameters were registered and zooplankton samples were obtained simultaneously. Densities of fish larvae (ind.100 m(-3)) were calculated from 211 samples and larval nutritional condition measured as RNA/DNA ratios were obtained for 346 individuals, using a fluorimetric method for nucleic acid quantification. Correlating variables were further studied using multiple regression analysis in order to assess the relative importance of abiotic and biotic factors affecting within-year trends in abundance and nutritional condition of estuarine fish larvae. Results indicated that: 1) the abundance of fish larvae seems conditioned by temperature and predation; and 2) their nutritional condition is dependent on temperature and prey availability. Temperature is an important variable structuring estuaries and therefore conditions the behaviour and physiology of fish larvae. Furthermore, the co-occurrence of predators and larvae might be related to similar feeding patterns or comensalism. Whenever feeding conditions are suitable, they usually determine enhanced growth and nutritional condition.     Multi-detector row computed tomography (MDCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the evaluation of the mandibular invasion by squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) of the oral cavity. Correlation with pathological data

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To retrospectively compare the diagnostic accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) in the assessment of the mandibular invasion by squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) having histopathological exams as standard of reference.</p> <p>Materials and methods</p> <p>Institutional review board approval with a waiver of informed patient consent was obtained. Of the 147 patients selected from our database who underwent surgical excision of a tumour arising into the oral cavity, thirty-six patients (26 men, 10 women; mean age, 56 years; range, 30-75 years) with hystologically proven SCC who performed both a preoperative MRI and MDCT, composed our final study population.</p> <p>Images were qualitatively analyzed in consensus by two expert radiologist in head and neck imaging. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) were assessed for both MRI and MDCT.</p> <p>Differences in sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values were calculated at a statistical significance of p < .05.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The sensitivity, the specificity and the accuracy of MRI and MDCT in the detection of the mandibular involvement were respectively 93%, 82%, 86% and 79%, 82%, 81%, while the positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) were respectively 76%, 95% and 73%, 86%. There wasn't any statistically significant difference in overall diagnostic accuracy between MRI and MDCT in the evaluation of mandibular tumour invasion (p > .05).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>MRI showed to have a higher sensitivity compare to MDCT in the assessment of mandibular involvement from SCC arising in the oral cavity although none statistically significant differences were noted.</p

    Correlation between tumor necrosis factor-alpha and D-dimer levels in non-small cell lung cancer patients

    The present study was designed to investigate whether a correlation exists between IL-6, TNF-alpha and coagulation (Thrombin-antithrombin, TATc) or fibrinolysis (D-dimer) activation in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. One hundred thirty patients with NSCLC (n=65, 53 males, mean age 65 +/- 8, adenocarcinoma n=32, squamous cancer n=33) or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (n=65, 51 males, mean age 67 +/- 9) were studied. As control group 65 healthy donors (51 males, mean age 61 +/- 14) were also evaluated. The results obtained showed that median D-dimer levels were higher in NSCLC patients (3.0 microg/ml) compared either to COPD patients (1.1 microg/ml, P<0.05) or controls (0.3 microg/ml, P<0.0001). Positive TNF-alpha levels (>10 pg/ml) were found in 26% of NSCLC compared to 3% of COPD (P<0.002) and 5% of controls (P<0.0005). On the other hand, positive (>8.5 pg/ml) IL-6 levels were found in 53% of NSCLC and 21% of COPD patients, compared to 5% of control subjects (P<0.001). Median TATc levels were elevated in either NSCLC (6.9 microg/l) or COPD (5.7 microg/l) patients compared to controls (1.8 microg/l, P<0.0001). Elevated D-dimer levels were significantly associated to positive TNF-alpha levels in patients without distant metastasis (F=4.3, P<0.05). Moreover, TNF-alpha levels (P<0.01) were independently related to the presence of positive D-dimer levels in patients with non-metastatic NSCLC. These results suggest that increased levels of TNF-alpha might be responsible for an activation of fibrinolysis in patients with NSCLC

    Quantitative analysis of CT-perfusion parameters in the evaluation of brain gliomas and metastases

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The paper reports a quantitative analysis of the perfusion maps of 22 patients, affected by gliomas or by metastasis, with the aim of characterizing the malignant tissue with respect to the normal tissue. The gold standard was obtained by histological exam or nuclear medicine techniques. The perfusion scan provided 11 parametric maps, including Cerebral Blood Volume (CBV), Cerebral Blood Flow (CBF), Average Perfusion (P<sub>mean</sub>) and Permeability-surface area product (PS).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The perfusion scans were performed after the injection of 40 ml of non-ionic contrast agent, at an injection rate of 8 ml/s, and a 40 s cine scan with 1 s interval was acquired. An expert radiologist outlined the region of interest (ROI) on the unenhanced CT scan, by using a home-made routine. The mean values with their standard deviations inside the outlined ROIs and the contralateral ROIs were calculated on each map. Statistical analyses were used to investigate significant differences between diseased and normal regions. Receiving Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves were also generated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Tumors are characterized by higher values of all the perfusion parameters, but after the statistical analysis, only the <it>PS</it>, <it>Pat</it><sub><it>Rsq </it></sub>(Patlak Rsquare) and <it>T</it><sub><it>peak </it></sub>(Time to Peak) resulted significant. ROC curves, confirmed both <it>Pat</it><sub><it>Rsq </it></sub>and <it>PS </it>as equally reliable metrics for discriminating between malignant and normal tissues, with areas under curves (AUCs) of 0.82 and 0.81, respectively.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>CT perfusion is a useful and non invasive technique for evaluating brain neoplasms. Malignant and normal tissues can be accurately differentiated using perfusion map, with the aim of performing tumor diagnosis and grading, and follow-up analysis.</p

    Changes in zooplankton community, and seston and zooplankton fatty acid profiles at the freshwater/saltwater interface of the Chowan River, North Carolina

    The variability in zooplankton fatty acid composition may be an indicator of larval fish habitat quality as fatty acids are linked to fish larval growth and survival. We sampled an anadromous fish nursery, the Chowan River, during spring of 2013 in order to determine how the seston fatty acid composition varied in comparison with the zooplankton community composition and fatty acid composition during the period of anadromous larval fish residency. The seston fatty acid profiles showed no distinct pattern in relation to sampling time or location. The mesozooplankton community composition varied spatially and the fatty acid profiles were typical of freshwater species in April. The Chowan River experienced a saltwater intrusion event during May, which resulted in brackish water species dominating the zooplankton community and the fatty acid profile showed an increase in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), in particular eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The saltwater intrusion event was followed by an influx of freshwater due to high precipitation levels in June. The zooplankton community composition once again became dominated by freshwater species and the fatty acid profiles shifted to reflect this change; however, EPA levels remained high, particularly in the lower river. We found correlations between the seston, microzooplankton and mesozooplankton fatty acid compositions. Salinity was the main factor correlated to the observed pattern in species composition, and fatty acid changes in the mesozooplankton. These data suggest that anadromous fish nursery habitat likely experiences considerable spatial variability in fatty acid profiles of zooplankton prey and that are correlated to seston community composition and hydrodynamic changes. Our results also suggest that sufficient prey density as well as a diverse fatty acid composition is present in the Chowan River to support larval fish production

    Il presente lavoro di tesi ha come oggetto di studio il sito archeologico del villaggio preistorico situato a Imola, più precisamente, all’interno del Parco delle Acque minerali. Esso si trova sul rilievo del Monte Castellaccio e nasce dal lavoro svolto nel Laboratorio di Laurea di Architettura per l’Archeologia durante l’Anno Accademico 2016-2017. L'obiettivo del progetto è stato quello di permettere, attraverso l’esposizione dei resti archeologici, una rivisitazione dell’area, attualmente trascurata, per renderla funzionale e in grado di essere utilizzata come zona museale. Per questo si è cercato di realizzare, su quest’area, un parco archeologico che fosse caratterizzato da una serie di padiglioni espositivi e laboratori di archeologia sperimentale al fine di permettere, ai visitatori del parco, di venire a conoscenza dei reperti venuti fuori dallo scavo fatto dall'archeologo Scarabelli. La tesi, quindi, è suddivisa in tre parti: la prima parte comprende l’analisi e lo studio della città svolto in collaborazione con gli altri componenti del Laboratorio, la seconda parte di studio e analisi dell’area archeologica oggetto del lavoro di tesi ed infine una terza parte che riguarda le soluzioni progettuali proposte. Il progetto qui presentato rappresenta un modo per mettere in risalto e valorizzare, attraverso l’importanza dei reperti archeologici, tutta l’area analizzata conferendo, non solo ad Imola ma a tutto il territorio romagnolo, un valore storico, artistico e architettonico di altri tempi
